The trajectory they took from scratchy rockers to straight up crooning is incredible. This stuff holds up incredibly well. Here's to a reunion one day!
The three times I saw them play this live, I cried each and every time. Their shows were just that seriously ethereal and emotional. Criminally underrated band, for sure.
Hamilton Liethauser has the kind of voice that picks you up by the scruff of the neck, slams you hard against a concrete wall. takes all your money, then drops you and kicks your head in repeatedly, and all you can do at the end is say "Thank you. That was the greatest experience of my life." No where else is that portrayed in this particular version of this song. His voice is quite simply lethal.
One thing I love and respect about Hamilton is that he never, ever phones it in like so many other singers (and, honestly it's understandable that singers give themselves breaks, performing every night for weeks or months on end). He pours himself into it in every performance of every song. I don't understand how he hasn't destroyed his vocal cords over the years.
I’d be willing to bet there’s no song I’ve listened to more since the first time I heard it while home sick with a fever in September 2009 than “In the New Year”
Please tell us! I also made one with my recent ex :( for me it was their song “Canadian Girl” summer of 2020 up north Ontario... play that song to her while we were on a paddle boat on a sunny Canadian August. Miss her so much! Cheers 🙃
The first time I heard this song I had just met this girl I went crazy over near the end of 2009. She wasn’t really into me but liked the attention enough to keep me close by, I guess. I shoulda known the stretches of indifference were more significant than the punctuations of engagement. Felt like a soundtrack for what would ultimately be heartbreak. “You took your sweet time and I waited by without complaint, til all the pipe dreams made me insane”
Wow. This song grabbed me when I first heard it, and I listen to it at least once every year. But this, his voice is just amazing - it's got a texture or dimension to it that isn't in the other version. The guitar too.
Just saw them again Friday and he sounded great. I have seen him sound a little raspy like this before though. What sets the walkmen apart is how they induce real emotion with almost every song with music and lyrics. That's what I've realized makes music timeless. Some catchy tempo and b.s. lyrics can make a good song, but it gets played out and you don't find yourself returning to it eventually. I can see myself listening to this shit for f$%king ever.
I'm currently living this song since January, we'll see how this year goes. Every time the sun seems to be rising a big gust of wind blows out the light. I wonder how it will feel in 3 years, listening to this song and recalling 2018.
I have a real love-hate relationship with this song. I love it because it's awesome, and I hate it because I can't sing along to it! Ham's range is still downright enviable, even if he can't belt it out to the same degree anymore.
Unos capos.
Having listened to four or five other songs by this band, it is difficult for me to understand the commotion...Until I hear this number...What PASSION! WOW...I wish I'd written it!!
I hope the band is having fun. They should be. Sounds glorious live, in its own right. It's not an album recording, but it's a good live recording. I'm not able to say that very often.
Eh my comment was harmless. I'm actually a huge fan of Ham and his voice. It brings a sense of urgency to their music. The band's just great too. They're one of the few in the last 10 years to keep putting out quality albums. Even as their sound has gotten more light and calm in the last few years they still pack quite a punch. Definitely wearing out Heaven at the moment.
"portrayed better than" I mean. I saw them with my now fiancee at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri last year. They were supporting The New Pornographers, and they just made them look stupid. Brought the damn house down. Gee can you tell I'm a fan?
@StandardofPurity Thanks for the tip....not as good as this number. I'm truly impressed with this one and, more than ever, I'm wondering if this is all there is? I write/sing in a DC band and we've just released our first full length CD. We're up for a possible Wammy nomination. I'd love to open for a band that does a lot of stuff like this. Even though we're pretty pop/Brit-pop...I LOVE this song and it's feel and apparent longing.
@TreadingLemming Listen to all their tracks and see what you think, they are too many good songs to just pick a few out is unfair to the others. Go from the 1st album to their most recent their 5th although you can skip their 3rd one, they were transitioning into this sound from their previous albums and it quite wasn't their yet. But all of the albums have something unique in them
The wanderer "man" on our earth should stop once and far away from the roar of mankind. Here he becomes aware that he is lied to every day in a lying world of fantasies for the benefit of a few elites of any kind.
Its me again:
2023 gonna be a great year. I can just feel it
it is
I was saying that too but its been the worst lmao
2024

Podes creer que venia a comentar exactamente lo mismo? No tengo palabras
His voice is epic!!!
The first time I ever heard this band or heard OF them was in 2002 ,when I saw them on Conan O'Brian and I wrote about it in my diary. 😂😂😂😂😂
Having listened to four or five other songs by this band, it is difficult for me to understand the commotion...Until I hear this number...What PASSION! WOW...I wish I'd written it!!
What a voice, that's what it's all about. Giving all of yourself to the music!
I love this song

Can somebody please bring The Walkmen back for fuck's sake?
love this track. love this band.
How perfect this is...
High wire act. Insane
Extraordinary!! I'm speechless :(
I know that it's TRUE... IT'S GONNA BE A GOOD YEAR!
If you dig the walkmen - hunt down "Jonathan Fire*Eater" - same band w/ a different lead singer. Great song writing - well worth the effort.
Certainement le meilleur groupe de rock alternatif
what a great fucking performance. i have no words to describe this.!
Masterpiece
Bob Dylan mixed with Bruce Springsteen 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I play this every new year's eve at 12am

Tremenda banda.
Fucking nailed it! It's like the perfect marriage between Dylan and Tom Waits... Breathtaking.
Spike Jones is a hell of a drummer! Who knew!?!
one complying song.
Que perfecto

His voice is going to be so fucked up when he's older.
honestly, with that voice and band, how come such pointless views it is pathetic.
play "the rat"
alright, i'll go back 8 years and give them the memo.
