This match is typical of the big matches against Serena from the 2000's. A lot of players get into a winning position against Serena and then disbelief and panic take over. In the decade-plus from 2002 onwards, most players stepped onto the court just hoping to take a set from Serena. So when they're actually in a winning position, they panic. That's pretty much what happened here. Mauresmo had no Plan B once Serena started playing better. Also goes to show the mental and psychological side of tennis almost no one ever talks about. Mauresmo choked, but then so did 80% of the other players playing Serena back then.
I think there is some merit in this. I thought similarly. Now Serena can't just power past people and I can see her pressing in tournaments instead of rising like she did for most of her career.
This was Serena's first grand slam after missing a lot of time due to injuries. She was not really match tough but played her way through the tournament to the finals. Most of her grand slam losses happened because of lack of match play due to injuries etc. She is still the GOAT along with Steffi Graf.
I wish they would go through and put all the finals up first....I haven't been able to find a complete version of Chris Martina 1985- the only one on youtube cuts out the 3rd set. Then give us SFs, QFs and early round.
This was a good match. Full of drama and intensity. Can't believe it has been over 19 years as I write this. And knowing what happened in the Saturday too. Yes a classic match.

It is due to her loss in that 2004 final that she vowed to get better as a player and never lose to Sharapova again (she only lost once more to her later in 2004). This is probably the defining tournament of Serena’s career in a lot of ways.

Because in the final Serena was flat as a pancake, she had nothing left after the titanic battle against Amelie. Sharapova took full advantage and won her only Wimbledon title, beating Serena in straights. And Mauresmo finally won her own Wimbledon title two years later against Henin.
This is the poorest I've ever seen Serena play at Wimbledon. There's no way she would have beaten Sharapova in the final. 2012 Serena would have beaten Mauresmo in straights in less than an hour.
these French women players (Pierce & Maurusmo) like to question calls on .lines which are obviously in..yet the nitpicky French crowd on other players dont attack them..(& yes im aware this video is Wimbledon). 😁
Serena is so much lighter here, about 10 kilos, and she can move. While 2010 onwards Serena is not fat, she is too heavy to get the best out of herself. I liked the all court game of Henin, Mueresmo, Graff, Hingis, and now the Australian, Barty and the Canadian girl. I think some tennis will be good again, with new rivalries and a return to the all court game. I got turned off by Serena and others who thought That bit was enough to hit big.
@@Onlywolfalone it was evident in many of those recent finals. She just couldn't track down balls to stay in the point and had to over hit to cover that weakness. Compare that to thar Halep final. Halep tracked down lots of shots and made her play one more shot if not win the point outright.

Venus never played Sharapova round of 16. Only once did she ever play Venus at Wimbledon and that was 2005 semifinals

I thought the first couple of years with Patrick she slimmed down 2012- 15 I guess that's why she won so much during those years.
