I'm sorry Michael, but I'll have to disagree. Having Chuck Norris on the GI Joe team would NOT be fair to Cobra. In fact, he'd render the whole GI Joe team obsolete!

i used to put Torch's head in Recondo's body and play like he was Chuck Norris' Braddock from Missing in Action. Then Outback came along and I didn't have to do that anymore :)

Great list! Rocky Balboa was meant to be the third "real" G.I.Joe back in the day, they even printed his file in Marvel's G.I.Joe: Order of Battle #2 (and later a retraction when the deal fell through), it was the whole reason behind making Big Boa in the first place.
I think my own list would have perhaps included people like Arnold, Lee Majors, Tom Selleck, Bruce Lee, and Bruce Willis (imagine him saving the '89 cartoon).

    • @MichaelMercy
      @MichaelMercy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Thanks! I never considered Rocky a real life Joe. More of a cross-over character. Sly didn't live his gimmick like wrestlers did.

These other characters are great ideas. I really love having Selleck/Magnum as part of the Joe team, especially since in the show he was already part of Naval Intelligence!

Lee Majors! That reminds me, how about Robert Conrad? Pro boxer with short but unbeaten career, martial artist, all around athlete, played a lot of tough guys, and one of the original "does all his own stunts" guys. And he liked to fight, remember him daring anyone to knock a battery off his shoulder? In the 80s he was a bit older, but just as fit and starred in the action show High Mountain Rangers.

A great and very entertaining video, Mike!!!
Mr. T as the JOE's Chaplain would have been one of the most incredible things to ever happen.
I would've put Arnold on the list, though, personally. :)

  • @chrisreick4325

Love this so much! I especially love the Mr. T bit. Thank you for not shying away from your faith, brother. Yo Joe, and praise God!
I think my list would’ve been something like this…
    1. Mr. T - Chaplain/MP/ Boxing and Hand to hand Combat Instructor. Code Name: Mr. T
    2. Arnold Schwarzenegger - Heavy Artillery Driver/Code Name: Big Guns (Comes with vehicle - Pounder: M110 Self Propelled Howitzer)
    3. Clint Eastwood - Marine/Amphibious Assault Trooper. Code Name: Jar Head. Catch Phrase: “We’re Joes. When the chips are down, we improvise, overcome, adapt.”
    4. Tim Allen - Vehicle Mechanic/Combat Engineer. Code Name: Gear Head (I know Home Improvement was a 90’s show, but his stand up was in the 80’s)
    5. Sylvester Stallone - Infantry Trooper/Weapons Specialist. Code Name: Rambo. Catch Phrase: “Cobra drew first blood. I didn’t.”

    • @MichaelMercy

I love idea of Mr. T as the Chaplain! I would love to see him (maybe how he became part of the Joe team?!) play out a scene similar to the Pearl Harbor Chaplain that helped man the AA machine guns and famously yelled "Praise The Lord, pass the ammo!!"

Those would be great Joe figures. Chuck Norris could even have variations a Delta Force version being part of the Night Force and a Braddock as part of Tiger Force.
A Mel Gibson from Mad Max, he could come together with the Interceptor and his dog, and a Kurt Russel from The Thing with the flame thrower, would be awesome.

    • @MichaelMercy

Harrison Ford - Codename: Indy Solo - comes with Blaster, Whip, Fedora, and soft goods black Vest. Michael Jordan - Codename: MJ - accessorized with various gadget weapon Basketballs and Sweat Bands.

“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, the patriot who carries a 2x4 and the Star Spangled Banner is my pick for a GI.Joe, he to could be a member of Slaughter’s Marauders with his personal battle cry of “U-S-A!” or “Hay Oh!” he would strike fear into some of the Dreadnoks, fear of the “2x4 of Freedom” smacking them across the back of their heads.

@@MichaelMercy Love the video Mike. I'll have to give some thought to who I'd add, but I'm getting the feeling you might have to do a Part 2 or 3 with one for the Cobras and if enough people give good suggestions no telling how far this can go. I do have a couple ideas; for the Joes Bruce Lee as a infiltration specialist and hand to hand trainer. R Lee Ermy as DI. Muhamad Ali since Rocky Balboa didn't work out. But for the Cobras as a stagiest Bill Belichick.

It would've been cool to have one (or more) of the famous astronauts like John Glenn or Neil Armstrong to have figures...could have been released the same year as the Defiant.
Insert Cliff Clavin 'little known fact' - Bazooka was based on Steve Grogan, real life career QB for the New England Patriots, with his #14 jersey and mustache. Honestly, I think most fans of GIJoe already know this, but it's still worth a mention.

Exactly! I just recently learned that the 90's cartoons were purposely made goofy/silly to fit the new FCC regulations under Bush Sr. That explains why the DIC GIJoe was almost unwatchable. Reagan definitely needed a figure in the original GIJoe line, his efforts to improve the economy and provide choice in the market with deregulation is why we had so many great toys and cartoons in the 80's.

I think one of the reasons a wrestler translates so easily into GI Joe as oppose to a football player, or Hockey Player. Is that to make it as a football or Hockey player etc. You just have to be skilled athletically, but to be a wrestler, and be successful you have to be athletic, and a performer. Most wrestlers already have over the top cartoon larger than life personas.
With that said a Wayne Gretzky, GI Joe figure would have been a cool addition. He could have been part of the arctic special forces.

    • @MichaelMercy
      @MichaelMercy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

True, they're a breed unto themselves; athletic actors. And they lived the gimmick too, appearing as their wrestling personas on talk shows and public events and sometimes even at the restaurant or bar.
Wayne would have been a 'great one' (pardon the pun) in the spirit of an athlete like the Fridge. Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson too. How about Bo Jackson? Bo knows Joe!

Arnold Schwarzenegger from Commano! Perfect fit! also my favorite Arnold movie! 3. Jesse Ventura from Predator. Those are my must-haves! I love The Dusty Idea, so how about Terry Funk as a Cobra! or instead of Mr.T, The whole A-team? By far my favorite was Reagan ! His file card alone was epic! I was 9 in 82' and discovered GI Joe about 3 months before Wrestling, Just before Hulkamania. Not a fan of the Ultimate Warrior, But he would fit in great with Masters of the Universe.
Macho too! Love your work! I have always loved action figures but don't collect them (Guitars and Legos are enough for me.) You me got interested in Them Again! Nerdmaste'

Before the boogeyman goes to sleep he checks under the bed for Chuck Norris, down straight. Chuck Norris was once bitten by a cobra. After suffering for 5 days it was confirmed the Cobra was dead. I still love those gags about Chuck Norris. Another one of my favorites is beard of knowledge. Always found it weird how much Outback looked like Chuck Norris and honestly wish I had the scale to take a couple of those damaged out back heads that I've got and repaint them to look like Chuck Norris's beard and put them on a more suitable body. I'm really surprised after all these years they haven't broken down like we did with Roddy Piper and done a special edition Chuck Norris GI Joe rather than fans doing it another one that never seems to cross a lot of people's radar as a GI Joe was and still is Bruce Campbell. I also joke about Steven Seagal but a lot of people immediately will say don't go there when you joke about Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme they both kind of gained popularity after GI Joe so I get it but I'm a little surprised they didn't kind of make their way into a newer iteration of GI Joe toy lines. Another one that probably didn't make this list but is 1980s is kind of a given Tom Selleck and of course Charles Bronson. Those two probably don't make many people's GI Joe lists but both Bronson and Selleck were pretty big in the 1980s and would have made sense to be translated into GI Joe figures when you think about it obviously they would have embellished a bit and made Bronson taller but still either one of them could have been a Joe figure given their catalog of action movies more so Bronson but Selleck is definitely on the list. Yes I know Magnum PI heading over in GI Joe type figure from some other company very poorly done figure I might add

I like all these. I'm not so much of a wrestling fan, so can't comment too much on your picks, but Road Warriors look much more like Dreadnoks than any other. Iron Sheik, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, King Kong Bundy and a couple other 80s wrestlers would make good Cobras/Dreadnoks, Nikolai Volkov could be Oktober Guard, and Vince McMahon would work for the Crimson Guard. Macho Man, Jimmy Snuka, Jesse Ventura, Hulk Hogan, and Captain Lou Albano would have all been fun to see.

    • @MichaelMercy

Road Warriors started off as heels but quickly turned good guys because the fans loved them so much. Every time they tried to be bad guys, it didn't last thanks to the fans refusing to boo them. That's why I couldn't see them as Dreadnoks. Too popular to stay bad guys. To this day when a wrestler comes out and there's a huge ovation, they call it a "Road Warrior pop." 💪

In my office now I actually have a Ronald Reagan figure holding Captain America's shield. No one man is more synonymous with the 80s than the man who led the nation for almost the entirety of the decade.... the man who, to this day, got more electoral votes than any President in history.

A few guys for Cobra could have been the "Russian" guy from Octopussy (stephen berkoff) and Rambo ii. Kurtwood Smith from Robocop. A dreadnought recruit could have been __ from Octopussy with the sawblade yoyo.

Imagine The Road Warriors using weapons to get in close to the Cobra troops, throwing down their weapons, double clotheslining Crimson Guards, Double Shoulder tackling Tomax and then... Xamot goes up on Animal's shoulders while Hawk climbs a tank and then flies off w/ a clothesline as Animal flips Xamot onto his neck!!

I never got into the wrestling. It is very popular, ofcourse. And amongst Joe fans, there is an obvious reason why they would be keen. But for me, I just found it a bit corny as a kid. I do like the Sarg, but was neverr interested in his wrestling outfit figure, I only wanted the cammo one, so he looked military. I would have him training the Joes, getting them into shape.

Honestly I didn't know that Vince McMahon was a real manager I thought he was just another actor playing a role the same as the wrestlers. Never knew he was a real manager for say. And I didn't know that Sergeant dad bought left wrestling I remember him still being in wrestling and the last going off they had him playing a bad guy up against Hulk Hogan in one of the Royal Rumbles or something like that during the Gulf War first one. It's always been funny to me that Slaughter was a wrestler the guy looks like Bob the plumber or Mr dad bought and never really look like Adriel sergeant the action figure looks like a drill sergeant but the actor behind the the figure doesn't look anything alike from the neck down lol. I actually thought he used to play the Iron Sheik till somebody pointed out about a year ago the guy that played Slaughter never played the Iron Sheik I thought they were the same actor.

My number 1 pick was going to be Rambo, but I realized you were going with completely real people even if they had a larger than life persona. Stallone himself wouldn't make a great Joe even if Rambo and Rocky (who technically is a Joe) would.

Mr. T, Reagan, and Norris are all great choices. Some other good ones that could have worked:
Dolph Lundgren-huge, expert martial artist, engineering degree.
Lee Marvin-WWII vet and all around tough guy persona. Between The Dirty Dozen and Delta Force, we can get an idea how he'd be as a Joe officer.
Arnold Schwarzenegger - starts out as Oktober Guard who joins the Joes full time.
Jake the Snake Roberts - he screams Cobra agent.
Andre the Giant-need I say more?
