Didn’t really get into the Evil Horde figures, but the first run He-Man villains were the best; Tri-Clops, Trap Jaw, Fak-or, and Beast Man are the best. Oh, and Man-At-Arms was the coolest. His accessories were excellent, but his mustache was suspect.
Had them all as a kid. Still have them to this day. I had the dark skinned Grizzlor variant and did not realize I had the rare version until the Dark Horse toy guide was published.
It's a bit of a meme for Gen X to brag about what great toys and shows we grew up on, but Masters of the Universe was the pinnacle for overall quality and imagination. The 80's was truly a golden age for children.
Depends on how you look at it. I was super into all of that stuff back then, outright obsessed and that is the issue and why I look back now with mixed feelings. They really went after kids hard and turned us into addicted little plastic junkies and trained us to be useful little consumers. Not that kids nowadays are off much better, but kids before the 80s probably were.
@@TrangleC It's funny to think of boys being turned into "useful little consumers" considering how little there is for grown men to buy ourselves. If you're not spending everything on a woman, the market has no idea what to make of you.
@@TrangleC Not a bad point concerning Gen X "plastic junkies". However, pick your pop culture poison. Current generations chase being in the know of all things streaming and social media. Severe FOMO grips the majority of them. In comparison, action figures start to seem less harmful.
I loved my Modulok, I'd say he was my favorite figure of the entire line, or at least top 5. But I was a kid super into Lego, Capsela, Zaks, Popples, and later K'Nex, basically any kind of building toy that snapped together, I had some pieces of a set if not a collection, so it was right up my alley. I recall the plastic being difficult to snap together, but not overly so, it was tough enough you could bang them on concrete if you had to, to pop a joint in. And while he lacks a Horde symbol, that just made him fit into any other adventure as a monster, so he could be fighting the Ghostbusters (Real or Filmation) just as easily as the Super Friends or the heroes of Star Wars, it was a huge range of figures at that scale and we all just mixed and matched as we liked.
It was difficult to assemble, but then it stayed. Totally different from "modern" toys which are obviously tailored towards "modern", fragile children.
Great video. As a kid i almost had all motu figures and buildings...and i was in love with She-Ra :D The evil horde really stood out to me. When i see Heman or the real Ghostbusters i always feel like a kid again. The 80s was a great time for kids. I remember getting up early to watch the saturday morning cartoons and eat cereals like Frosties. Today im still collecting action figures (in original package of course), but most from the 90s. My apartment looks like a toy store. A few month ago i sold a Skeletor (one of the first with soft head) from my childhood on ebay...i have to say i regret it.
I thought Modulok was the best of all the evil horde. When I got him Christmas morning my parents had to take him away for a bit so I would open my other presents. I was obsessed with him. Having the ability to create him how you wanted was huge. Kids have wild imaginations and Modulok allowed kids to do something other characters could not.
The Evil Horde Slime Pit was so incredible. I remember getting this as a kid at Kay Bee Toys on clearance and it was one of my top He-Man toys ever. I would bash it with my GI Joes as a Cobra torture device as well......I miss those days, thanks for the memories!
I have kept all of my Masters Of the Universe figures from the 1980s as well as the Castles, could never bring myself to throw or give them away. My favourite toys growing up
Fantastic video Tony! While I'm not a huge MOTU fan I still found this video very interesting. Really liked the cobwebbing in the background, definitely added to the theme of this group!
There is a reason I het the bell on your videos, not that I give to rats ass about MOTU, but because you make the subject interesting and informative. Thank you Tony!!!
Excellent video Tony. I was born in 1971 but didn't have many MOTU figures. I've begun collecting the Origins line but I really enjoy your videos on the vintage MOTU stuff.
Great story, my dad once back in the day stuck my LEECH toy to his forehead while showing off after getting home from the pub. He left it on a bit long, and had a huge red round lump there for about 3 days.
I’m very fond of Modulok, though I must say it’s likely because he’s the only initial Horde figure that I never had. I eventually corrected this by picking up his Classics update.
i recently aqquired a Hordak on Ebay, and figured he needed a "BATTLE ANIMAL" to ride on as well, not knowing NOW.. that he had his own insect battle animal. i went and bought a second "PANTHOR" and did some painting, and configured a "CAT BATTLE ANIMAL" for Hordak, painted largely to resemble the rider in color. i don't ever do customs but for my first i am quite proud of my concept Hordak "BATTLE ANIMAL", which i named "GARR-GOYLE"!
Always love your well produced documentaries on various parts of toylines. You are where I come tp broaden my knowledge on these lines, as I missed out on these toys as a child. Origins has helped me get the feel of the era at a reasonable price, however I do lacl knowledge of some of the figires from the line I have chosen, Mantenna being the perfect example.
I wish in the She-Ra show that the Horde went to Eternia way more, I thought in the beginning that it would happen , all we saw was the Etheria Heroes in Eternia for all ofe one Minute at the start of the Christmas special and Hordak at the memory portion of the secret of the Sword. great Video anyway, had those first Horde figures myself, thank you for your attention to them.
The evil horde and the battle damage he man and skeletor are the figured I have actual memories of getting because I was a little older by then. I had all of the classic figures and castle Grayskull but those were among the toys that I remember always just having because I was so young. Great video!
Its true, I had an original Modulok and it did loosen over time, but from the go he became one of my favourite figures. So much fun and super creative in play.
As a kid and even today when I see the initial Evil Horde figures displayed next to each other I always kind of see the classic Universal Monsters. I wonder if the designers at Mattel in the 80s were inspired by them when designing the Evil Horde. Great video as always Tony.
Probably. I know before the newest CGI netflix show got canned, they were planning on sending the characters to earth where they'd encounter the Evil Horde, who were cryptids that inspired the folklore behind the Universal Monsters.
I assumed they were pumped up versions of Skeletor's crew. Hordak is a more successful Skeletor. Grizzlor is a more savage Beastman. Leech is a more dangerous Merman. Mantenna is a more hideous Tri-Klops. Modulok is sort of a strange Two-Bad. But it falls apart with Dragstor and Mosquitor.
We only had Mantenna as kids (my brother and I) but I loved the Horde. The Masters of the Universe commercials were the best of the bunch. The writers and actors all should be recognized because they made me want those toys, the Evil Horde one is especially memorable. I love how, even in a universe with some villainy looking villains like Skeletor and his crew, they made the effort to make the Horde even more monstrous in appearance.
Fantastic retrospective. I thought I knew all about the Horde, but there were a few toys here I've never seen before. I loved the atmosphere of the Fright Zone, partly because of the box art. The puppet monster reminded me of the local legend of the Lambton Worm.
As a kid I was given Castle Grayskull for my birthday or maybe Christmas and I loved that thing. I HAD to have Snake Mountain too though, I mean how do I play with a cool base for the good guys but not one for the bad guys?? My parents explained that those playsets are big and expensive, but as a small kid I didn't really understand that. My mom eventually did get me Snake Mountain... but... she made it herself! She looked at pictures of it in catalogs and made a cardboard box into Snake Mountain for me. She drew on it and made the pathways and rooms and whatever. I had rooms in the back, so she improved on that or just didn't see the inside possibly. Then the Fright Zone came out and of course I wanted that too, so my mom decided to make it for me again. This one was cool because she even made a monster hand puppet thing out of felt so I had the big monster that pops out of the wall to eat people. Were they as good as the real ones? I mean I can't sell mine and surely they lacked some of the features... but... even as a small kid I was REALLY happy with this because I could see that my mom cared about me and was awesome for doing this for me. I got a ton of use out of my homemade Snake Mountain and Fright Zone and I remember those probably more than my legit Castle Grayskull, though that was definitely a treasured toy. My mom actually didn't even really approve of me playing with He-Man toys. My collection started when a neighbor boy showed up at the door trying to sell a huge bag of He-Man toys he said he was too old for. She gave him like five bucks and I got like 10+ figures. I already had Star Wars and some DC Super Heroes at the time so she knew I was into action figures. I guess it was a good deal so she bought them from the kid and let me have them. I got plenty of new He-Man guys after that. I don't remember having trouble with my Modulok. I still remember the comic book for his figure. He put himself in a box in pieces and the good guys brought him into Castle Eternia, then he assembled himself into I think two creatures to go do whatever nefarious thing he was going to do in there. I do NOT remember him being Horde though.
i reckon they will release these in Origins eventually, however they will drop a bunch of rubbish like turtles of power and wrestling figures beforehand and drip feed the good figures people actually want.
The Evil Horde, alongside with The Snake Men, were amongst my favorite MOTU figures growing up and, more often than not, I favored them as villains over Skeletor and his Evil Warriors. I was lucky enough to have most of The Evil Horde figures back then, with the exception of Modulok, Multi-Bot and the 2 Hordak variants (Hurricane and Buzzsaw); as well as having both The Fright Zone and The Snake Pit. Great video as always, Tony; it brought back some good memories of simpler (better) times.
My dad's favorite villain by far was Hordak. He was fortunate to receive the first release horde figures and the Fright Zone for Christmas. But he was always disappointed by the horde trooper, since he only got to town every few months it was always sold out. (Joys of living in rural America in the 80s) My favorite thing about the MOTU toy line (other than dad letting younger me play with them) is watching dad's face light up watching the cartoon episodes on Saturday morning dvd binges.
I have collected since '82 (with a hiatus during New Adventures) and as a kid The Evil Horde quickly became my favourite team. They were big and imposing and seemed to come out of nowhere with a totally new look. Leech is still my second favourite character (not strictly the toy, but in art, sculpts, etc) and my number one favourite character since 1983 is still Trap Jaw, so it's always cool to see others who hold him dear to their hearts. I love your videos and obviously found you by your MotU videos, but learning of other lines from your videos is so enjoyable. As a kid we had to make difficult choices as to which line to mainly dedicate ourselves to. I stopped collecting Star Wars when MotU came out. But I was also intrigued by Transformers, Dino Riders and Insectoids among others. Thanks for another great video mate! PS: I agree, Mantisaur was the king of the steeds and one hell of a memorable toy in the line's declining years.
Tony, thanks for another great video. Generally speaking, I've always considered the first two years of He-Man figures to be the best ones of the line. I passed on the Horde when I was a kid, but they've grown on me over the years, and I'm now happy to own them. If anyone is a big Hordak fan, I recommend the DC Comics He-Man series from the 2010's. He's a very terrifying and powerful villain in that story.
Another excellent and informative video, Tony. I have never collected MOTU figures, so this video was a great way for me to catch up on, " The Evil Horde! "
Thanks for posting this, it's a great video. It looks like I dropped He-man in 1986 as I have some horde soldiers, the first 4, modiloc, few horde soldiers, Dragstor, and multibot, but I have never seen the next years releases before.
I got into MOTU in 85 so many cool guys like Stinkor Syklone Twobad Spikor then they released The Evil Horde I remember thinking these guys were mindblowing and thought that an evil guy against the hero and the main evil guy Skeletor was really clever it really blew the boundaries of just Heroic vs Evil. Heman teaming up with his hated enemy Skeletor against Hordak was a really cool spin on MOTU, Cool how GI Joe had a similar arc ie Destro/Hordak and Zartan/King Hiss... Awesome Tony 👌
Fantastic video! A real trip down memory lane. Thank you. I had completely forgotten about how much spit we had to use whenever we played with Moduloc!
The Evil Horde were some of my favorite additions to the MotU line up. One thing I found interesting is that the "Fright Zone" has more than a few play features in common with Mego's Star Trek "Mission to Gamma VI" playset.
From the original Evil Horde collection I think Modulok was the one who I liked the best. Mostly due to the endless ways to play assemble him. A very thought out toy. The robot counterpart Multibot paried really well with him
I still have my original Leech with crossbow, absolutely love him. I picked up Origins Hordak. Always reminds me of Christmas 1980s watching the He man She Ra Christmas special.
This is perfect timing. I’ve completed the MOTU collections thru 1984, and just recently decided to go for the Horde next. Tony, maybe you can do the Snake Men after i get these completed!!! Ha Ha…. Great content!!
Wow I had totally forgot about Mosquito!! I had him and he sure was a favorite! The blood effect was just so cool. Trap Jaw, Kobra Khan and Moss man were among my first figures. Sadly I've got none of them left.. =( Firecrackers.... Cool collection dude!
@@nike80nl Not always! I have two sealed Horde slime vats with the Euro label and although I won't open them, when I shake them they still have a wet goopy sound, but yeah, more of a thickened blob sound rather than runny ooze, but hey, wet is good enough for me! 😀
The Horde are the only MOTU that I remember get new and opening Christmas of 1986 or 1987. We had a ton of MOTU toys but sold most of them as we moved on the gi joe . I like the Horde figures the most of the MOTU line.
Oddly enough, Modulok was in the original MOTU cartoon and, if I remember correctly, was an evil scientist creature who operated independently from both Skeletor and Hordak.
Oh that snake puppet was an INSPIRED design choice! I hope they make Grizzlor available again in the Origins toyline somehow because I just started collecting the Horde this week and the Mattel Creations one has long since sold out
Having multiple villain factions is one thing I love about MOTU. The Horde I enjoyed playing with as their numbers were smaller I'd treat them as more powerful individually than Seketors Evil Warriors.
I was never into He man as a boy. But as a adult I really enjoy the design and all the features put into the figures and I am also checking out the 1980s Filmation cartoon too.
Loved the Horde faction! Universal monsters meet MOTU. My favorites are Mosquitor, Leech, Hordak. Then Grizzlor & Modulok(in the toon he originally worked for Skeletor). Also loved Monstroid. Lunataks in Thundercats were like the Horde for that series. Trap Jaw is my favorite character of all too.
Great video as always. The hoard marked my exit from He-man. I only had hordak and Leech. But the fact that the She-Ra figures were not compatible with He-Man (always weird to me) along with some odd concepts in the later years I just felt it had run it’s course. Dragstor is a prime example. Just too far into the weird. I also remember reading Modulok being difficult. It got to be a frustrating time.
Mosquitor's head reminds me very much of the alien resistance fighter "Nemesis the Warlock", from the comics of the same name in the legendary british magazine 2000.A.D.
Do you collect Evil Horde action figures?
Sure do. The variant face paint of Grizzlor is also highly sought after. He is the black face paint.
A very big Yes
Had them all as a kid. Still have them to this day. I had the dark skinned Grizzlor variant and did not realize I had the rare version until the Dark Horse toy guide was published.
Great video Tony. 🙂TBH unfortunately I didn't own that many MOTU figs. But I did enjoy the cartoon series.

great vid, big collector, highlight of vid to me, mentioning Gregory the Bat, had that bad boy when a kid~
This video is absoLukely awesome! A Snake Men retrospective next?
Fantastic video! A real trip down memory lane. Thank you. I had completely forgotten about how much spit we had to use whenever we played with Moduloc!
Awsome upload and review - enjoyed every minute of it 🙂
The Evil Horde were some of my favorite additions to the MotU line up. One thing I found interesting is that the "Fright Zone" has more than a few play features in common with Mego's Star Trek "Mission to Gamma VI" playset.
Great stuff as ALWAYS Tony!
The only experience of he man and She Ra were the cartoons I never realised till now how big this toy line was
I loved the Horde Troopers totally cool design, the shaky unstable mechanism of the chest however was an annoying reduction to play fun.
Great vid Tony. Am looking forward to Mattel unleashing the Evil Horde as part of the Origins' Cartoon Collection!
Anybody remember GI Joe’s “October Faction”, the Soviet heroes?
Oktober Guard
@@HeadCanonUnlimited that’s it! Thank you!
They are one of my fav factions for Joe!
They had a brief cameo in a Transformers episode, too.
Issue 6&7 of the Comic in 1982. They didn't make figures until MUCH later. They were originally just for the story.
I stil have an unopened bottle of Evil Horde Slime.
I think the slime has been dried up im afraid 😉
@@nike80nl Not always! I have two sealed Horde slime vats with the Euro label and although I won't open them, when I shake them they still have a wet goopy sound, but yeah, more of a thickened blob sound rather than runny ooze, but hey, wet is good enough for me! 😀
Mosquitor is my fave action figure within the whole He-Man release line. Maybe Scareglow too - both brilliant figures.
Really enjoyed this video. Took me back!!!
Nice documentary. I love it.
The Horde are the only MOTU that I remember get new and opening Christmas of 1986 or 1987. We had a ton of MOTU toys but sold most of them as we moved on the gi joe . I like the Horde figures the most of the MOTU line.
I dont collect but im 47 years old and I had so many of the toys you are showing
Another absolute banger of a video Tony!!!!❤😎
Wow, this took me back. Thank u
Great video. Really enjoyed it.

Great vid thanks for the memories brother !!!
Having multiple villain factions is one thing I love about MOTU. The Horde I enjoyed playing with as their numbers were smaller I'd treat them as more powerful individually than Seketors Evil Warriors.
U have no idea how much i love motu
Great video!!! As a kid, I remembered leaving the slime onto one of the figures overnight.
Results, the slime turns to glue!?
I was never into He man as a boy. But as a adult I really enjoy the design and all the features put into the figures and I am also checking out the 1980s Filmation cartoon too.
I loved he-man, it's a pleasure to see the figures I never had
Loved the Horde faction! Universal monsters meet MOTU. My favorites are Mosquitor, Leech, Hordak. Then Grizzlor & Modulok(in the toon he originally worked for Skeletor). Also loved Monstroid. Lunataks in Thundercats were like the Horde for that series. Trap Jaw is my favorite character of all too.
i dont know why, but the Beast Monster hand puppet going though the tunnel almost reminds me of the giant space worm from the Empire Strikes Back
Great video. I am not sure your intention was to have so many funny parts, but I laughed many times (maybe more than I should have)!
Beast Man in the 1987 film reminds me more of Grizzlor than he does Beast Man.
I loved Modulok. His story was cool too. Came with a little comic book I think or had the comic on the box.
Oh this video takes me back
Mosquitor's head reminds me very much of the alien resistance fighter "Nemesis the Warlock", from the comics of the same name in the legendary british magazine 2000.A.D.
Modulok was the only member of the Evil Horde I had as a kid.
I remember how the Evil Horde felt very cool and new and like a great addition to the world of MotU to me back then. The marketing worked well.
