I just bought a 68,000 mile 2009 C63 AMG for crazy cheap because the previous owner listed the car as having major engine issues that could cost many thousands of dollars to fix. Mercedes and AMG had many issues with this M156 engine when it first came out so it wasn't crazy for the previous owner to assume it needed work but I was able to fix this one in 30 minutes and with $150 in parts.
Here's a video on all the major M156 factory defects.

    That is a
tremendous design feature: putting a plastic coolant tube that is going to
break, instead of building the whole part out of aluminum or whatever metal.

    • @JohnDoe-bd5sz
      @JohnDoe-bd5sz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah sometimes you just think "Are the designers not supposed to be professionals"
Had a similar thing happen on my dad's car (I was the one that noticed it...One spring day he came to visit, had driven about a mil and a half and when he arrived the radiator fan was on, full speed, which i found odd as the engine should hardly be at running temperature on such a short trip on a not very warm day).
This was also some plastic stud that had broken off of the coolant pump....The replacement pump from the manufacturer had a metal stud instead.
It just baffles me that a manufacturer with over 50 years experience in building cars, had thought that a plastic stud was a good thing to begin with....Luckily they had wised up and replaced the plastic stud with a metal one on the replacement.

@@bentleymccray1599 2013/14 W204s with the M276 engine and 4Matic are very popular. My wife & I found ours at CarMax... good deal for a well-maintained example. It had 59k miles on it. For another $2k, we could have had a similar car in black on black with 28k miles, but it felt as if it had been "rode hard and put away wet".
Ours now has almost 75k miles on it and it still looks and drives as new. Only problem has been from a car wash and getting used to the low front bumper scraping a bit. So, I refinished it and used stuff to ward away chips and will never, ever again take it to any car wash where it pulls the car thru it. Plus, I am now a LOT more careful with curbs and concrete stops in parking lots. Have to fix the rear bumper behind the rear wheel as a stone flipped up and gouged the bumper cover on the side a bit.
I run with Conti DWS06 tires and stock 17" wheels. Still using original shocks and springs and it handles very, very well... a sleeper handler.
I get around 21mpg in town and 28-33mpg on the road. The Econ button for stopping the engine and instantly restarting it at a light is erratic. I've heard others (and with other mfgrs as well) have a similar issue.

put the stock exhaust back on it and install some electronic (or vacuum) exhaust cut-outs in between the center resonator and rear muffler. It will make the car sound a little louder when you want it and quite when you don't. Installing the cutout just before the rear muffler will give a much better sound than obnoxiousness you have right now because the center resonator does help a lot.

I buy cars for $500-1000 that don't run at all. I take plenty of chances. If I can't fix it or it isn't worth it, I part it out and make my money back. I bought one for $500 (early model prelude), complete engine rebuild, tires, brakes, timing belt, water pump, bearings, accessory & serpentine belts, motor mounts etc all replaced. Put about $700 in it. $1200 total investment. Sold for $3,000. $1800 profit. Total of maybe 40-60 hours of work in it. That comes out to $30-40/hr worth of work. Fairly decent profit. As long as you're mechanically skilled, it's easy to flip cars.

Probably he was beating on it, and that is why the engine mounts are so badly ripped, and engine jumps. He also had his own mind set on how he beat the car, and how many things will start failing because of this, on top of the loosing coolant and smoke. Damn man, this is the sweetest deal ever, I have heard and seen cases where people buy things that sellers are afraid, or think are broken/bad, and then it turnes out a minor fix here and there will have the car good. This engine sounded so good, I mean the engine in the front, not the exhaust, where I could hear on neutral there was no ticking noise, rod knocks, nothing, just your typical, quiet running engine noise. Sound perfect. The wreck, even better, depreciates the car due to title, and this was nothing I saw on the picture.

One thing to note on the updated bolts. I have an E63 in the shop right now that's already had them replaced. But whoever did it... not such a good job. They coated the threads of the new bolts in plumber's Teflon thread sealant, and maybe skipped one of the 90 degree turns. The bolts didn't fail exactly, but there was a compression leak into the cooling system because the last guy working on it, shouldn't have been working on it. Between that and leaking injectors, this one was hydrolocked. Amazingly didn't actually hurt the engine though! These things are TOUGH! It's running great now.

Only someone with your skills and MB friends would be so bold on that purchase. But at that price a gamble worthy of your love of the C63.

knowledge is power. you got a good deal because you were not concerned if anything big was wrong. you would have just fixed it. you labor is free and you have the right tools and the know how. many times these days a $50 part might cost $500 or more to replace at a shop. i always tell people that never buy a euro car off warranty unless you know how to fix it yourself or you have a money printing machine

I would advise you against a m156 engine they are the worst Amg has built. Find some references on TH-cam to confirm.
You got it for about half price now salvage title should be about 11-12k. So not too shabby

It's surely no oil that burns... Oil would be blue. It's just water that condensed in the heated exhaust system. I noticed the same on my 2010 C63 performance when I was driving short distances mostly. No problems whatsoever after a good old run on the Autobahn. :) Best wishes from Germany

Now you know why the thermostat's plastic bit broke off. With that much engine movement it's a miracle that it was the only thing that started leaking.

"One mans junk is another mans treasure"! Hard to fully appreciate the exhaust on YT. But, doesn't sound bad really. Most people I would say wouldn't take the chance. You have STAR diagnostics and factory mechanical skills most mere mortals do not possess when shopping for a benz. That said, deal of the year if the compression checks out! Damn. Score man.
