    I am in Melbourne, Australia. For the past few years, I have grown broccoli the following way. I plant small seedlings (starters) in mid-summer, while the soil and weather are still warm. I cover the raised bed with a fitted cover of shade cloth - 70% UV reduction, The sides of the shade cloth cover meet the ground surrounding the raised bed. I peg the shade cloth to the ground so no moths can get underneath. At that time of the year, they are everywhere here so it's vital to exclude them. the plants grow away happily under the shade cloth until winter comes, then they slow down, and by June/July (mid-winter), they have produced large heads like the ones shown in this video. At that stage, the cover is propped up on stakes and there aren't any moths around to make holes in leaves, lay eggs etc. The broccoli heads appear randomly and as soon as they reach a good size, I harvest them and cook them as part of the evening meal. I only grow a bed of nine broccoli plants so there is not enough to freeze. After cutting off the main heads, the side shoots produce the smaller broccoli as shown in this video. I harvest those when I want to add broccoli to a dish for dinner. At that point, I pull out the plant and make stock from the plant stems and freeze to add to soups and casseroles for added nutrition. I use home-made compost to grow the broccoli and mulch with organic sugar cane mulch. I water most days with a drip system and/or garden hose. The raised bed cover net stops rain and pollution falling directly on the broccoli. Some rain drips through the net but not enough to damage the plants.

    Someone else mentioned using the tough stems. I use the thick stump part in stir fries. First peel off the tough outer layers then slice to desired shape and size. I have also used it shredded in my coleslaw.

    THANKS FOR THESE TIPS!
    1. Put out broccoli plants when nighttime lows are at / above 7 degrees C / 45 F.
    2. Mulch / top dress the roots with partially rotted manure. Broccoli is a heavy nitrogen feeder.
    3. Use floating row cover / use BT (bacillus thuringiensis) to keep off cabbage moths.
    4. Rotate crops around.

      The moths are actually butterflies and the worms are their caterpillars. It's strange how much language varies.

    I lived in the desert in California. My first year of growing brocolli and cauliflower, I seeded both in late May/early June, not realizing they were cool season veggies. By October I had beautiful plants, but not one head of broccoli or cauliflower. The rest of my garden was finished producing. I had planted at least 25 broccoli and 25 cauliflower plants, and I was really disappointed that there was no harvest. I abandoned my garden for the year. I went out to my garden area in late December, and much to my surprise, I had a huge crop of broccolli. But still, no cauliflower, just beautiful plants.

    HELLO fellow Canuck!! We are from BC, I lived in 100 Mile House, Caribou Plateau, on a ranch resort as a 16 yr old. Hubby lived in and around Kamloops area. We knew INSTANTLY you aren’t from California! We can tell by the trees behind you and the light. 👍👍❤️❤️🤣🤣 Anyway, we’re in our 60’s now, living south of Calgary. Thank you for your wisdom, we truly appreciate it. That said we lived in Prince George for 11 years and it was much the same. Anyway, this is southern ALBERTA and 30 degree temp changes all year round are common, very hard on plant, trees, etc. We also get large damaging hail in June, July and August. Just another hazard along with scorching temperatures and punishing winds...all ‘gifts’ from BC coast to the eastern slopes of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. I’ve learned and said that “you need to be a bit of a masochist to be a gardener in southern Alberta!”. AND...you truly need a sense of humour...🤣🤣. Anyway I’ve subscribed and find you very informative and intuitive. Thank you! ❤️❤️👍👍

      @LittleMountainRanch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome fellow Canadian! I love me some Canadian subscribers.😊 I’ve often wondered at why on earth I chose to put down roots here when I love to grow food so much. I mean, we don’t have it quite as bad as you guys, but I’ve had about enough of this near frost in July! Masochist, indeed!

    I steam my broccoli florets tender, then dehydrate them. when I need them, I just put them in hot water for 10 min, put them into pastas, it's delicious. I eat the stem steamed fresh, they don't re-hydrate good for my method. I like them better this way than blanched and frozen. it takes far less space too.

    Good video, you might not have known and did not mention that actually broccoli leaves are delicious and edible good in salads, the leaves of broccoli and leaves of cauliflower and Carrot Tops the greens of carrots are also edible and delicious! I use the leaves of broccoli in salads and there's so much more green shiny than lettuce in my salad! I didn't know if you knew broccoli leaves were edible and healthy full of vitamins, so I thought I would mention that! nice video your broccoli plants got a lot more bigger than mine I'm trying to learn how to grow bigger broccoli mine only went up by 12 in in height as far as the entire I took my broccoli leaves last year, I'm trying to find tips on how to grow bigger broccoli maybe my garden was too close together my broccoli plants were only eight to 10 in apart maybe that's why my broccoli plants did not get big enough, either way enjoy broccoli leaves in salad they're delicious!

    Beautiful haul!! Thanks for all the growing tips. I only tried growing broccoli once 25 years ago and stopped because of the worms :)

    My issue is the chemtrails block all my sun for weeks at a time in early spring then for 60 to 70 straight to 90's. Crazy about to give up but going to try green house LOL

    Oh MMMY goodness! Can I move in with you guys? I am so impressed with your daughter...she just does her job while munching on fresh garden goodies with no complaining or fussing. That's what you get when raising a family on the farm. They learn to work and enjoy life as it should be. You explained the whole broccoli process so precisely I could have listen to you all day. Thanks so much!

    Hi! It's my first time on your channel and I really enjoyed this video. Can't wait to see what else you have to offer here. I'm new at gardening and it's relatively small scale compared to what you're doing but you truly inspire and I just wanted to touch base to let you know. Please continue what you're doing because it shows in your harvest and through your voice when you talk about it. Thank you so much!
