As a Japanese speaker, the subtle change from referring to Keizo using kanji to using katakana and then back to kanji was very well done. For those who don't know Japanese people's names are usually written in Kanji whereas katakana is usually reserved for animals so referring to a "person" using katakana is very dehumanizing.

@@dontcareaboutmypfp2768 I don't watch Ultraman so idk but you sure you're not thinking of hiragana? Kanji tends to be written in hiragana for kids shows so kids are able to read it and I assume Ultraman falls under that

@@dontcareaboutmypfp2768From what I've heard, using katakana (or even hiragana) for names means that it's only a name, it doesn't hold any special meaning like using kanji does. It's literally dehumanizing, just like what @FishandChipper commented before (take what I said with a grain of salt).
But in the case of shows for children, I think it's also just for making the names easier to be read and understood by kids.

In the sequence beginning at 7:21, Keizo’s name (which has been spelled in kanji 敬三 until this point) is suddenly spelled in katakana ケイゾウ for for two lines of text (“Team searches for Keizo” and “Keizo is found”) before reverting to 敬三 again when he is rescued. This might be unintentional, but if it isn’t, it’s a bit… concerning. For those less familiar with Japanese, katakana spellings are usually used for foreign words or the names of animals…

From the little that I could gather, here's my theory: the ningen are some type of spiritual creature or extraterrestrial entity who mimic the human form and voice. The "Department of Human Studies" we see in the beginning could be a secret government organization dedicated to research on these creatures, meaning this is not the last and maybe not the first time the ningen have been encountered.
The question "what if gets warm", is eerie, as the cold, faraway distance of Antarctica might be the only thing keeping humanity safe from these monsters. I say they're malevolent, but could be otherwise. They could be completely alien in nature as well.

9:30 reading «1. human 2. “human”» is so unsettling, I can’t even properly describe this

  • @yuurou7927

Can't say I saw this coming. Despite the real picture of Ningen was just a rock, the idea of an obviously not human enough looking creature being percepted by everyone who witnessed it as "can't describe it well except it's human" is fascinating. Looking forward for your take.

at 3:45 there's a single frame that has text saying, "THE FUNATSU FAMILY IS PREY." I'd also like to point out how Keizo's name changed from using typical kanji to katakana (typically used for foreign words) when he went missing, then back to kanji when he's found. Maybe it shows how keizo turned 'foreign' when he was missing??
