      @@WILDALASKA yeah I pointed it out to those who might be new to the Nikon system. Indeed there are quite a few tricks on the Nikon that make your life easier like turning the image so that you can see a portrait image in full rather than a mini version of it. Mind you this will affect the way it will upload into lightroom (i.e. all the images will be 'laying down' so to speak)...

    Great video and the z9 seems like a winner with either lens system. Can’t see myself switching “again” back to Nikon, but who knows? It’s nice to know it can be a companion without the hassle of “switching”.

      Just so you know I also have for many years, used both Canon and Nikon. I've switched to Canon from Nikon and back a few times, but mostly I shoot Nikon. However I still have access to Canon gear, as I'm a photojournalist and my news agency has both for pool equipment. The Canon 500mm f/4L IS II is a great lens, but the Nikon 500mm f/4E VR FL is both lighter and sharper than the Canon. It also autofocuses extremely quickly on the Z9 or Z7 II. I personally use the D6 as my main camera's but I also now have added the Z7 II and FTZ II. The Nikon 500mm f/4E VR FL is quite rare, I'm the only guy I've ever seen with one, I own one and it's a phenomenal lens. It's even sharper than the new Nikon 400mm f2.8 S VR 1.4x TC lens and it's on par or even better than the $15,000 Nikon 600mm f/4 S 1.4x TC. I've had the pleasure of using both of them and the two new Nikon lenses with built in TC are phenomenal in how they work and how the TC is a game-changer. However I sold my 400FL to buy the 500FL for weight savings and I honestly didn't expect to love the 500FL as much as I do. Nikon has no plans whatsoever to replace the 500FL and why should they? Read the review on Photographylife.com and you'll see the 500FL is one of the sharpest lenses ever made. It is noticeably sharper than the Canon 500mm f/4L IS II. I've used both extensively. So you may want to keep an eye out for a USA used copy of the Nikon 500FL. The TH-camr and wildlife photographer named, Trond Westby has the 500FL and he too loves it. It's truly a phenomenal lens! They go for about $7,000 so not too much more than your Canon is worth. Maybe $2k? That would be worth it to me personally, because I know just how good the 500FL from Nikon is. Just have a look at the MTF or WTF chart, two straight lines across the top! It does not get any better!

I left Canon when i was shooting AMA Superbike racing and the Canon 1dmk3 came out. I bought 2 of them and my 600 4 and 400 2.8 lens. My sharp keeper rates on my 1dmk2 N bodies way out performed the new mk3 bodies. Sent both bodies ot Canon they said no issues. I knew there was an issue. About that timer Nikon announced the D3. After 6 months of fighting the mk3 bodies i tried the d3 and was blown away by the performance compared the mk3. I moved over to Nikon then. I have had the Fringer about a year now and there were a few small bugs when using my EF135 f2L in the earlier firmwares but otherwise my yearly conclusions mimic yours! I agree with you about the power that the Z9 has, definitely quickens up older lenses because I have an old original EF 300 f2.8L (1987) that has never worked so hard on any of my Canon bodies, I am actually worried that the Z9 might finally kill the motors!😂 I have now invested in five Zs lenses so far and they are superb (especially for me as a hybrid shooter ) where Nikon have recently updated all my lenses with linear focusing and adjustable lens throw! The main difference in using the Z native glass is not the speed but the next to silent nature when those motors are working full throttle plus on the video side being able to use the control ring for zooming or step-less aperture!👍🏾🙏🏾

    Great video. I’ve been shooting with a Canon 600mm F4 ( the first one) and my Nikon Z6II for a while. I rented the Z9 and it has been a fantastic experience. I still have another week to go on the Z9 rental using it every day. What is leaning me towards the Z9 is that I also use Sony lenses on it.
    The Canon adapter works best, the Sony lenses work well on the Z9 as long as I don’t use a teleconverter for Sony. I’ve done, landscape, birds, macro, portraits.
    So I will make my final decision in about a week. I must say that I’ve captured some beautiful images with the Z6II but the focusing mechanism is no where near the Z9 and that has given me lots of great opportunities to capture more images in focus.

      The good stuff about Nikon is the flange distance (it's the shortest of the three i.e. Sony Canon and Nikon). This allows you to adapt all type of glass out there to the Nikon. I shoot Nikon and I do know that currently Canon and Sony have better AF (definitely more stable ones for that matter). But the quality the Nikon's sensor is delivering (made by Sony but on Nikon's specs and design) is second to none!

    I’ve had this adapter with my Z50 from back in the early Z50 days, and find it absolutely fantastic. I had an opportunity to buy a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EF mount lens for a great price which is what got me wanting EF lens options. This has allowed me to get my 50 1.8, Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and Canon 17-55 f2.8 to make my complete set at a reasonable price for an amateur like me. Only issue I’ve had is it can be battery hungry (may also be the IS in the 17-55 sapping power). Otherwise it works really well. Fringer are great at keeping the firmware up to date and the Nikon autofocus firmware upgrades have worked with it the whole time. Fantastic video Wild Alaska!

    I'm impressed! Now someone needs to make an adapter that can do Nikon F to Canon R and have functional autofocus. On the subject of 200-500 focus speed, I can tell you that on a non-flagship Nikon F mount body, it racks focus noticeably slower than my Nikon 500 f/4G VR or my 70-200 f/2.8G VR II does. This slightly slower speed never bothered me but it was enough of a difference to be observable.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya the bigger battery and power delivery on the R3 actually drive the 2 motors in the big whites while the r5 and lower only spin one. I could really see the difference in power delivery to the motors on all the lenses. And im assuming it does the same on the Nikon system and testing seemed to show that.

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WILDALASKA I have read the same, but there seems to be limitations from what I can see. A mark 1 500mm f4 (which is the lens that I own) will be slower than the mark II on a RF body simply cos Canon has programmed the AF to be slower it seems...Gordon Laing seems to think otherwise (that the motors are slower in the mark 1 version, which is why the lens is slower) but I call BS. mark 1 and mark II lens are near identical on a 1Dx Mark III in terms of AF speed and overall performance. The sooner people start hacking the Canon camera internal software, the sooner we'll start to see the proof that Canon is deliberately slowing down older lenses to encourage upselling to RF glass that is overpriced and lacks any 3rd party compettiion. If governments are truly interested in protecting consumer rights, they'd be asking Canon for the source code etc and going over it with a fine tooth comb.
      I'm committed to Canon cos of glass (I don't have big enough balls to switch to a Z9 lol!).
      My honest take of Canon is that they are seriously struggling to keep up with sensor tech and falling behind Nikon and Sony. I mean, a R1 out 2-3 years after the A1/Z9 and it'll probably only just be keeping on par with those models and by that time, Nikon and Sony will probably be laughing and release mark II versions that blow the R1 out of the water. I guess time will tell if I'm right.

    • @WILDALASKA

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WILDALASKA I've heard a fraction slower, not much slower. I know the mark 1 won't use the full AF area on RF - I think the USM II motors in the mark II are more power efficient and there's 2 of them, vs a single 1 in the mark 1 from memory. Correct me if I'm wrong. I also believe that the mark II is optically superior, but again, only by a small amount, nothing earth shattering. If I could have afforded a used 500mm f4 II, I'd have done so.
      Are you referring to the Nikon 200-500 vs the Canon RF 100-500, with the Canon being way ahead? To be fair to the 200-500, it's a 10 year old lens design and a lot has changed since then. The Nikon 500mm f5.6 pf is by all accounts, a very nice lens, and quite reasonably priced, but still epensive for the average person I guess.

    I read on a B&H review that the latest Z8 Firmware (2.0) causes issues with the Fringer EF-Z adapter. Have you seen any such issues?
    You can see the review in question under the EF-Zii adapter reviews. There are only 6 for this latest version of the adapter.
    I shot Canon for 20 years before switching to Nikon and have a ton of EF glass, so this adapter has been great.
    I've had very few issues with my adapter since buying it in June 2020. I did have problems with my Tamron G2 150-600, but those were resolved on the Fringer about a year ago.
    I was considering renting a Z8 and either an R5 or an R8 to compare to the focusing systems now that I've read Z8 2.0 has tampered some of the focus acquisition issues (focusing on background).
    In your experience how do the two AF systems compare?

It's not as fast as a dedicated Z lens, but it is definitely snappy. Know this from cover Big10 basketball and football with adapted Canon telephoto lenses. Here's the gotcha with the Fringer - if you stop down F8 or more for strobe work (mostly wide angles for me), the adapted lens will miss stopping down all the way properly here and there, leading to overexposure. Wide open, Fringer is flawless. Stopped down, an adapted EOS lens on a Fringer is going to going to miss frames here and there as the diaphragm blades don't close.

      There are a ton of trails all over the Anchorage area and the area is wild. Bears, moose, fox, raptors etc. We see bears and moose walk right through downtime at times.
      So there are several places along the trail with groups of fox. This area is a frequent of mine for 2 different groups. One female is more tolerant of people but they are still fleeting encounters.
      There's some lucky times where they will stop and watch us goofy 2 legged animals.
      And fox do get curious.
      I have a video coming up this month of some fox adventures and if you scroll back in my videos there's a video with this female fox from earlier in the year (last winter)

    I have been shooting the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 with the D850 "with the battery grip" for two years plus a few months, and the D500 "which I no longer have, killed it in a freak mishap" for over four years. The lens is fast and tack sharp "considering the price it sells for" with both bodies. I have also been shooting the Sigma 500mm f4 sports for a bit over three years now, which is one excellent piece of glass. The Sigma 500mm f4 sports prime AF is noticeably faster than the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 with both the D850 and the D500.
    Now to the Z9, I have been shooting the Z9 with both lenses for close to a year now. They don't behave any different than they did with the D850 and the D500. The only difference is the fps advantage the Z9 has over the D850 and the D500. I only shoot in RAW. The D500 gave me 10 fps with a pretty much limitless buffer, the D850 with the battery grip gave me 9 fps with a buffer of 5-7 second bursts depending on the situation before it slowed to a crawl, the D850's small buffer "remember that it is pushing 45 megapixel Raw files uncompressed" actually improved my BIF technique.
    I still own the D850 and not planning to sell it anytime soon. The images the D850 produces are still fantastic today.
    The main reason I bought the Z9 was for video and the increase in buffer size and FPS. You can tell the difference between 9 fps and 15-20 fps.
    The Z9 is pretty much a D850 on steroids.
    In regards to the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6, it's sharp wide open, but it's sweet spot "for my copy at least" is f/7.1-f/8.

    Hi Scott, your fox is such an adorable pet !!
    We have to agree the Z9 seems to focus perfectly, even with enemy-lenses ;-)
    Maybe a next time you can check whether it's the same in case of foxes (and birds) in flight ??
    Also interesting would be an AF comparison between Z9 and R5 (if still possible) given they have about the same mpix.
    Still wondering whether the sealing of the Fringer is strong enough to survive Katmai and Kodiak when the salmons are back, and whether you'll miss the 100-500 on the Z9 ;-)

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, theres a lot of foxes around the trail systems of anchorage. There is one female that's more agreeable luckily.
      I had an eagle burst with the 500mm and z9 but I cut it due to time and the video was still very long. And this time of year its hard to get BIF here in AK besides ravens and be able to switch lenses and get a comparable shot. Maybe come spring the. the seagulls etc are back.
      And I can tell you right now the r5 AF will kill the Z9. The systems are totally different in how they operate also.
      the fringer doesn't have weather sealing. I did. talk to a fringer rep and the next version will have weather sealing, but you get some weather sealing from the body and les if they are weather sealed. But il have a rain coat on it if its in heavy rain or sand conditions for nay camera I use lol

    I have to laugh at Canon - Nikon 200-500 f5.6 price in Australia ~ AUD $1600. Canon RF 100-500 - AUD $5k...Sony's 200-600 is ~2k AUD too. So, are Nikon and Sony underpriced or is Canon overpriced? If I didn't hate the Nikon UI, I'd be tempted to switch to a Z9...
    Not only is Canon blocking 3rd party lens manufacturers from the RF mount deliberately, they are price gouging their customers on RF lenses...ALL of them. Even the humbe nifty 50 - $100 more for the RF version than the EF version in Australia...for what is probably identical optics.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA ปีที่แล้ว

      The Nikon 200-500 is f mount. The closest equivalent in Z glass will be the 200-600 that's not released and it will probably be 2.5K if it holds in line with the Sony as its based on that lens.
      Also your paying more for d drastic weight reduction on the rf 100-500 as that Sony 200-600 is a brick. Theres a lot into pricing and features.
      Prices are pretty much the same.
      The PF range is the same as canons old DO range with same pricing.
