Ouya had it all: wildly successful kickstarter, a $99 price tag at retail, a good selection of quality inexpensive indy games (I think all with free demos) and they could barely make it a year before throwing in the towel. If that didn't work who in their right mind would think this would? The Oculus Quest brought in $877 million in revenue last quarter and is still 3 billion in the hole from 2021... Unless a company has a deep library of quality console exclusives and a large enough user base to make the platform attractive to developers and worthy of their investment of dev hours it just isn't happening.
The Ouya keynote was pure cringe, in SXSW what looks to be a bigger audience than Tommy’s well received keynote in 2018. Still, she took it like a champ. She wasn’t harassing or insulting critics online, and quietly wrapped things up after Ouya failed. Compared to Tommy she’s a class act and behaved a lot more like you expect a CEO to behave. It’s incredible that 10 years later Ouya is still the standard to beat for crowdfunded consoles.
I honestly thought the Ouya was a good idea. A $99 android box console. I lived in China and we didn’t have them readily available there, but if I lived in a market where it was a thing. This would have been the ultimate casual console. Shame it didn’t work out :(

The fans are used for a PR spin room, if you will. It seems unlikely that they are getting paid to do this, given their immense devotion to the company.

This is not supposed to be an insult or attack, but Tommy would argue with teenagers on message boards when he was (probably) at the height of his fame, when he was on TV and magazines, over them disagreeing with his points or comments. And I mean doing it in kind of an immature way. I just mean to say I think it was obvious that he was always this kind of person and none of this should really surprise anyone.
I think Tommy's biggest problem was his exaggerated claims, promises and lies regarding the console. In the age of TH-cam you are not going to get away with such BS. If Tommy was more humble and honest about the console it would have built more trust and respect. There is a way to hype a console without being dishonest and deceptive but for whatever reason Tommy wasn't able to do this.
The Chameleon guys used the Jaguar shell because they wanted to rehabilitate the Jag's legacy by putting a truly great machine in that case, and they did it. Now, turns out it was an SNES Jr., but it is still the best thing ever put in a Jag shell, so mission accomplished!

I actually have met Tommy personally and it’s nothing to write home about. I would have called myself an admirer of his work as a composer in the games space at one point but his behavior around the Amico has greatly diminished that respect.

This is what happens when someone who thinks they know how to make video games tries to make video games. Tommy has a lot of experience in the industry and has worked on a lot of titles but he's been a music composer. While important, this is a process that is pretty disconnected from the rest of development, often happening in a completely different studio. Tommy's CV of game soundtracks he's produced is impressive, credit where credit is due there, but he's never actually designed a game, never mind a game *console*, so him leading the creative vision of this thing was always going to result in a disaster.

Kickstarter and other crowdfunding website is laden with scams that are entirely technobullshit based or concepts that cannot meet the tangible reality of physics and chemistry. But yeah, it boggles my mind to see some people throw sometimes THOUSANDS of $$$ at something that simply cannot work in the real world. The scuba air piece that allows you to breathe underwater by filtering O2 from water ? No affordable machinery can manufacture a filter that can filter out ATOMIC MOLECULES on a scale that could allow a human to breathe underwater. The "magic" bottle using a Peltier system to refill itself with water it condenses from air using a tiny solar panel ? It would require to suck hundreds of gallon of air for 2 days straight to fill half of one at that voltage but would stop working at night. The umbrella that uses a flux of air to repel water instead of nylon fabric ? Nope ! You need a huge force to repel water so unless you want to use something as big and noisy as a leaf blower right over your head, it's not feasible. All of these examples collected hundred thousand of dollars and either flopped or fled with the cash.

They likely used the Jaguar shell, because Tooling to make the metal Injection Molds, is VERY expensive. If they already have the molds, then they just have to get a plastics company to do a production run, which is pennies on the dollar, compared to the Mold making process / costs. Larger companies that know they are going to sell millions of devices, can justify the huge upfront costs of making custom shell molds. But if you are only planning runs in the thousands... its a whole different story. Many smaller companies either use existing molds from obsolete products... or make slight modifications to those molds. You see this a lot with Chinese clone devices (such as the fake Retro-Consoles and handhelds). Also remember, you are not just molding two halves of a shell. You also often need to have a mold for each different button, a cartridge dust-door cover, expansion port access covers.. and more. Then you have to assemble things with the correct screws and springs... and have them work flawlessly, without any frictional sticking, failures..etc. Companies often have to make several mold versions, to fix various issues that fail in their long mechanical testing sessions. If it were so cheap and easy to make these things... then you would see a lot more small businesses competing with the big companies.
maybe it's because those names are not from my era of gaming, I'm from the NES up to the current gen... but I cannot envision a retro console with a 70s name being relevant nowadays, like, having what we have for current generation gaming, the bar is set so incredibly high, and realizing how expensive good quality video games are to develop, this demonstrated by sony microsoft and nintendo development studios, there is no way for me to imagine Intellivision to have a product that is worth any of us gamers time, there is already so much incredible quality videogames that this could only appeal to nostalgia hard core fans that grew up with these systems, expanding beyond that to newer people that are not even familiar with Intellivision and then to realize the games on there might be mere novelty to me sounds like a non existent product with nothing to offer and that would fail immediately. To be honest I'm not even sure why the Atari VCS exists
This. I'm a 42 year old gamer, starting on the NES myself. I've had ZERO interest in anything prior to or right around that time like Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc. I mean there's a reason this thing only has 6,000 preorders. The original wasn't that great and the chances of a new revision based on nostalgia at this point in the gaming landscape, was NEVER going to be good or succeed.
Exactly, I feel the same. These company names from pre-NES days are absolutely worthless. Only significantly old people would be interested and that generation of gamers weren't the hardcore types that were spawned after their existence.
As a retro gamer I had some interest when the Amico first appeared. It looked like they were doing something different with the old games. It didn't matter to me if it was just a phone powering it, it was the old gameplay that mattered. But as you say, it's about how the company is run. There are other examples of decent new ways to enjoy retro games (the Evercade, the Spectrum Next), which made it to market. It's a shame if the Intellivision community gets burned.
This whole thing is pretty sad honestly. I was hopeful for the Intellivision at first. I didn't care about it all too much, but it seemed like a neat concept at the time. Might have thought about buying one once it came out. Sure, Tommy liked to talk about his entire life story from birth to death in the interview, but I was mildly optimistic. But then all of it started to crumble. And here we are. If anything, I might still have thought about getting it even after all this, as a piece of gaming history, if nothing else. Actually, being a friend will more often than not give you license to be harsher on them when critiquing their work because as a friend you genuinely want them to succeed.
This Tommy guy is talented I can tell, but he has issues. There was a musical project him and an artist named BT worked on and he made that a disaster too where a lot of peoples kickstarter tier rewards where never made and never sent to the people who funded the project. The artist BT was in a rough spot because it wasn’t on his side of the affairs to deal with, he had fulfilled his end of the project. My advice, if you want a project to go right, do not have Tommy be a part of it.
When Tommy described the console, it sounded like crap even at $150 for the machine. People were basically paying that much to play atari games. Then made it out like his trophy system was robust. You will get a trophy saying that you are the top player in this part are of the world at X time. (ben stein voice) wow. This thing seemed like crap and hinged too heavily on the controller. Atari games are still atari games. I do not care how you dress them up. People should save their $150 and buy a real system.
On the Thumbnail there is a picture of the Coleco Chameleon, and I thought for a moment we were going to see that vapourware make a resurgence, but then thst plot twist where the new Intellivision CEO is one of the people behind that... I call the Amico a scam because they had "NFT-like" ways to buy games, and the console itself was just as fun as one of those Chinese knockoffs you get at Dollar Stores. I’m so glad I got a refund for my preorder for an Amico. The original vision for it looked so cool and I was totally on board, but they’ve abandoned all of their principles for the console, and have made a bunch of questionable decisions like getting into NFTs for the games and stuff. It just isn’t for me anymore, and I’d be amazed if it ever actually releases.
I remember losing respect for him back when he still did Judgment Day and they did a review of Kingdom Hearts but then started complaining and saying they were deducting points away because they didn't have a block system or the ability to see the enemies health bars. I realized in they were BSing and all the reviews and didn't actually play the games through
Here is the thing about "prototypes" you have two types 1) is a functioning display model that accurately represents what the final product will look like, and the 2) a MOCK UP of what the product will look like AFTER the company get's the money to build it's functioning prototype. The "mock up" doesn't need to function it just needs to convey what the product will look like when it hits store shelves
I wrote off Tommy a while back personally. I made a single video bashing the Amico way back in the day once. I'm a small know-it-not youtuber. And he took it personally. I think the idea of the Amico is an interesting one and is different enough to be a potential disruptor,, but I feel like the console itself is pretty ill conceived.
It's like I keep saying, the old saying of "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." needs to be posted literally everywhere at this point. Nobody can seem to distinguish criticism from "harassment".
I don't believe it was designed as a scam. But it looks like it became one in the end. Crowdfunding to pay back loans and obviously no way to actually produce the systems.
What it boils down to is Tommy made promises he couldn't keep. He ended up being a used car salesman and has lost the trust and confidence of many. I wanted nothing but the best for the Amico; I even put a deposit down on the founders edition. I have now formally requested a refund, for the writing is on the wall. The production and planning of this system has been mismanaged and there is no future for it.
Excellent video! I still think it’s an interesting idea for a system, a budget priced unit with family friendly games sold at an affordable price. It’s crazy that they couldn’t like… just grab some old cellphone clip sets and toss something together by now.

Tommy's CV of game soundtracks he's produced is impressive, credit where credit is due there, but he's never actually designed a game, never mind a game *console*, so him leading the creative vision of this thing was always going to result in a disaster.

Rich attacked others like Pat and Ian that were critical of the Amico for a long time, it's good he is critical of it now but he was on the tommy train for a long time and that makes me wary of rich going forward.
@@lothar71 Unlike Pat and Ian who wanted Amiico to fail day one and continued to spread misinformation about the system, because they wanted it to be another Coleco Chameleon due to views they got from that scandal. Rich actually gave Amiico a fair chance and waited until more information came out before giving his final opinion about it. Amiico had the potential until Tommy screwed things up.

He’s a footnote of gaming industry from the 90s and early 2000s. He was on the old G4. He doesn’t know how to carry himself on the internet today and while he might be chill with his fans in person, he’s a loose cannon to critics online and underestimates how that sticks in people’s memories today.

i forgot what the name of it was, but this is really reminding me of a kickstarter scam from years ago about a folding laptop that never made it past 3D what-if animations of it and yet people just kept throwing money at it for months
Kickstarter and other crowdfunding website is laden with scams that are entirely technobullshit based or concepts that cannot meet the tangible reality of physics and chemistry. But yeah, it boggles my mind to see some people throw sometimes THOUSANDS of $$$ at something that simply cannot work in the real world.
The scuba air piece that allows you to breathe underwater by filtering O2 from water ? No affordable machinery can manufacture a filter that can filter out ATOMIC MOLECULES on a scale that could allow a human to breathe underwater.
The "magic" bottle using a Peltier system to refill itself with water it condenses from air using a tiny solar panel ? It would require to suck hundreds of gallon of air for 2 days straight to fill half of one at that voltage but would stop working at night.
The umbrella that uses a flux of air to repel water instead of nylon fabric ? Nope ! You need a huge force to repel water so unless you want to use something as big and noisy as a leaf blower right over your head, it's not feasible.
All of these examples collected hundred thousand of dollars and either flopped or fled with the cash.
Tommy built the cult with himself, the Intellivision name and the promise of a new Earthworm Jim. Except he's overrated outside of being a musician, the OG IntV was more revolutionary for sports games than for unique video games and EWJ has its own creator-focused controversy.
He built the cult by giving interviews to channels with 20 followers that got way too excited.

They likely used the Jaguar shell, because Tooling to make the metal Injection Molds, is VERY expensive. If they already have the molds, then they just have to get a plastics company to do a production run, which is pennies on the dollar, compared to the Mold making process / costs.
Larger companies that know they are going to sell millions of devices, can justify the huge upfront costs of making custom shell molds. But if you are only planning runs in the thousands... its a whole different story. Many smaller companies either use existing molds from obsolete products... or make slight modifications to those molds. You see this a lot with Chinese clone devices (such as the fake Retro-Consoles and handhelds).
Also remember, you are not just molding two halves of a shell. You also often need to have a mold for each different button, a cartridge dust-door cover, expansion port access covers.. and more. Then you have to assemble things with the correct screws and springs... and have them work flawlessly, without any frictional sticking, failures..etc. Companies often have to make several mold versions, to fix various issues that fail in their long mechanical testing sessions.
If it were so cheap and easy to make these things... then you would see a lot more small businesses competing with the big companies.

maybe it's because those names are not from my era of gaming, I'm from the NES up to the current gen... but I cannot envision a retro console with a 70s name being relevant nowadays, like, having what we have for current generation gaming, the bar is set so incredibly high, and realizing how expensive good quality video games are to develop, this demonstrated by sony microsoft and nintendo development studios, there is no way for me to imagine Intellivision to have a product that is worth any of us gamers time, there is already so much incredible quality videogames that this could only appeal to nostalgia hard core fans that grew up with these systems, expanding beyond that to newer people that are not even familiar with Intellivision and then to realize the games on there might be mere novelty to me sounds like a non existent product with nothing to offer and that would fail immediately. To be honest I'm not even sure why the Atari VCS exists
This. I'm a 42 year old gamer, starting on the NES myself. I've had ZERO interest in anything prior to or right around that time like Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc. I mean there's a reason this thing only has 6,000 preorders. The original wasn't that great and the chances of a new revision based on nostalgia at this point in the gaming landscape, was NEVER going to be good or succeed.

As a retro gamer I had some interest when the Amico first appeared. It looked like they were doing something different with the old games. It didn't matter to me if it was just a phone powering it, it was the old gameplay that mattered. But as you say, it's about how the company is run. There are other examples of decent new ways to enjoy retro games (the Evercade, the Spectrum Next), which made it to market. It's a shame if the Intellivision community gets burned.
This whole thing is pretty sad honestly. I was hopeful for the Intellivision at first. I didn't care about it all too much, but it seemed like a neat concept at the time. Might have thought about buying one once it came out. Sure, Tommy liked to talk about his entire life story from birth to death in the interview, but I was mildly optimistic. But then all of it started to crumble. And here we are.
If anything, I might still have thought about getting it even after all this, as a piece of gaming history, if nothing else. But not at that price point, man

Actually, being a friend will more often than not give you license to be harsher on them when critiquing their work because as a friend you genuinely want them to succeed.
This Tommy guy is talented I can tell, but he has issues. There was a musical project him and an artist named BT worked on and he made that a disaster too where a lot of peoples kickstarter tier rewards where never made and never sent to the people who funded the project. The artist BT was in a rough spot because it wasn’t on his side of the affairs to deal with, he had fulfilled his end of the project. My advice, if you want a project to go right, do not have Tommy be a part of it.
When Tommy described the console, it sounded like crap even at $150 for the machine. People were basically paying that much to play atari games. Then made it out like his trophy system was robust. You will get a trophy saying that you are the top player in this part are of the world at X time. (ben stein voice) wow. This thing seemed like crap and hinged too heavily on the controller. Atari games are still atari games. I do not care how you dress them up. People should save their $150 and buy a real system.

On the Thumbnail there is a picture of the Coleco Chameleon, and I thought for a moment we were going to see that vapourware make a resurgence, but then thst plot twist where the new Intellivision CEO is one of the people behind that... I don't want to be negative about Amico, honestly whenever I make videos about it I get some of the nicest most positive comments of any videos, the community seems very pleasant when you speak either positively or take a neutral stance on it, but this seems very weird...

Wow! I have been a fan of this channel for a couple of years now. I am a married 43 yr old black man. And I have never heard Rich of ReviewTechUSA exhibit anything close to racist. I feel sometimes Rich is a little silly for entertainment factor. But never racist. I hate when people throw that around like that for stupidity, it devalues when its real.

I’m so glad I got a refund for my preorder for an Amico. The original vision for it looked so cool and I was totally on board, but they’ve abandoned all of their principles for the console, and have made a bunch of questionable decisions like getting into NFTs for the games and stuff. It just isn’t for me anymore, and I’d be amazed if it ever actually releases.

Here is the thing about "prototypes" you have two types 1) is a functioning display model that accurately represents what the final product will look like, and the 2) a MOCK UP of what the product will look like AFTER the company get's the money to build it's functioning prototype. The "mock up" doesn't need to function it just needs to convey what the product will look like when it hits store shelves
I wrote off Tommy a while back personally. I made a single video bashing the Amico way back in the day once. I'm a small know-it-not youtuber. And he took it personally. I think the idea of the Amico is an interesting one and is different enough to be a potential disruptor,, but I feel like the console itself is pretty ill conceived.
It's like I keep saying, the old saying of "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." needs to be posted literally everywhere at this point. Nobody can seem to distinguish criticism from "harassment".

What it boils down to is Tommy made promises he couldn't keep. He ended up being a used car salesman and has lost the trust and confidence of many. I wanted nothing but the best for the Amico; I even put a deposit down on the founders edition. I have now formally requested a refund, for the writing is on the wall. The production and planning of this system has been mismanaged and there is no future for it.
Excellent video! I still think it’s an interesting idea for a system, a budget priced unit with family friendly games sold at an affordable price. It’s crazy that they couldn’t like… just grab some old cellphone clip sets and toss something together by now.
