This was a lot of fun. I can't imagine a nursery with a bonsai section. Nothing like that around here. Plenty of garden centers, because Tennessee has a great reputation for garden to table, and land scaping, but no bonsai supplies, or even knowledgeable people who even know what bonsai is. They think it's a jade tree. Any tree that I have, I found in the hill behind our apartment building, or from some cuttings that succeeded in rooting. These videos are super helpful. And Peter Chan's Bonsai Bible, of course.
It is easy to forget how different other enthusiasts find things in their own areas. I had someone suggest I should try collecting 'real' trees from the wild! I would - but I don't have a wild anywhere near me to do it :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Wild is a concept. Urban collecting is wild too. I found two mimosa trees from the woods up the hill from us. But I have a little maple that was growing in trash and rocks from where it all got bulldozed for the build. He can grow in anything and looks great. Just found a juniper in an abandoned grocery store parking lot. Literally bashed through the tar and gravel to grow. Maybe it's not in the "wild," but they sure have stories to tell. Y'all are where I learned how to collect trees and keep cuttings healthy, so I love your journey.
I would always recommend doing video records - even if you never upload. One day you may change your mind and then you will have loads of timelapse material to make it more interesting :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I resemble that remark. BTW, Xavier, I'm about to upload a short that shows the olive tree I was mentioning in the comments the other day.

Hi Xav those yew trees are a steal, they should make really good bonsai in time you will have fun with them trust yew you couldn't wait, poor Scott he seems a nice guy. That nursery is a gold mine for bonsai enthusiasts. You kept that a secret to yourself, Jelle will be disappointed you didn't tell him about them the nursery. You will have people bombing down to the nursery to buy some bargain trees, all the best my friend great too have you here the other day.
Thanks Joe - it has taken me two days to work through all the video clips we did. It will just be about you and your garden on Saturday. You come across very well and it will make for a great episode about bonsai gardens. I forgot just how many of the bonsai professionals you met in the 80's :)
Oh - man!! I would never leave Savin if it was near me!!! Very yummy looking stock. Wow - jealous! I live in a black hole when it comes to anything bonsai related. Thankfully, lots of urbandory, seeds and occasional nursery finds around.
As always, enjoying your bonsai adventures. I haven't seen a nursery like that in the US. Looking forward to seed to bonsai, but could you expand that to cover buying groups of small bare root whips, like the crab apples I have coming this winter? I shop frequently in the spring at a little seasonal (March thru May) nursery where everything is small like these whips and costs $7. It would be great to know what to do while waiting for them to grow out. My goal is small trees, not giants like your new juniper. Cheers!😊
I started something like that with my larch whips last March. To be fair they are just left to grow right now so nothing much to show in 2024. I will be following that up in Spring 2025. I did my crab apple whips in 2017 and they took ages. I will pick some more up this spring and start a comparison style approach to different growing techniques :)
I found it because it was halfway between mine and my sisters house near Horsham. It was a great stopping point to stretch the legs...and the wallet :)
After watching this i took a 6 round trip to Savins and came home with an olive a Japanese holly and a Chinese fringe and my wallet wasnt to badly hurt
I have done that in different videos - I get mixed comments. If this had been purely about the Taxus I may have taken that approach. It really depends onw hat the main subject is for the video and the time. Thanks for reminding me of this option though :)

Hey Xav, just stick a cork in it, literally, put a cork on the fork of the first yew, it will hold them apart, instead of wire.
