Aussie: that's one of the greatest gifts you could give your dad.
My father was also there. I know he was at Guam and Saipan. He was born in 1920, and died in 1997.
I so wish he had lived to take advantage of all these military historians (of which Mark Felton is the absolute best) on TH-cam. He was genuinely interested in many things
I'm happy for you and your dad.

I enjoy these kind of stories like I used to when I was a kid living in Los Angeles and an AM Station carried Mystery Radio on Saturday nights. We used to listen when we were camping or backpacking. Thanks Doctor Felton for this story, I did not know that that there was ever a train that was stopped which was carrying Jews. One of my teachers fled the Nazis in Hungary similar to Ann Frank. I don't remember if she showed us her tatoos, but she was real. We had to have our parents sign a waiver before she told the story each semester, it was graphic. She used to tell the story once a semester to her students in 7th Grade and we had nothing but admiration, respect and gratitude for her. It taught us gratitude for ourselves too because we were not living in that kind of society. Thank you and beautiful story!

I had never heard of the Death Train before this series. Thank you, I learned something new. My dad was a paratrooper over France during WWII; however he barely spoke of the horrors he saw while there. He had horrible nightmares for years after. But he did help liberate Paris. I'm very proud of him! This is a great series and I thank you for the upload(s)!

      That generation didn't have PTSD.
Of course they "had it," but it wasn't defined as such, and before the late 20th century, men were never supposed to have emotional issues anyway. "Stiff upper lip," etc.

Really Mr. Felton, incredibly a sad and dark story; however, like others have said bravery, humility and namely sacred humanity, was welcomed into my evening like a fresh light breeze. (I mean that). Wonderful story of truly caring people, unafraid of possibly their own ruin. With all that is happening around us right now..... this was a good albeit, temporary distraction.
Keep up the great work. These stories without video are fantastic. Look forward to more -week night .... listening.

Dr. Felton, your talents as a historical researcher are insane. How in the world you manage to gather such excruciatingly pinpoint details about even such rare and unknown events as this story I will never know. Furthermore, the type of stories you choose to investigate, and the moral intensity with which you relate them, are a testament to your strong moral character. As a son of two parents who were both sole survivors of large families, I feel a great deal of gratitude for you.

Thank you for all your great work so we can remember and hopefully learn from some of the darkest moments of our history. These acts of selfless bravery and compassion, no matter how "small" in the grand scheme of things keep hope alive for a better future. I have one tiny remark on this story which bears no weight on the accuracy of the events told, but I'll add it for the sake of completeness and clarity.
The fortress turned prison by the Germans is not called "Van Breendonk" but simply "Breendonk". Breendonk is a tiny village about 20 kilometres, or about 13 miles, from Antwerp and the fortress is part of a circle of fortresses built right before world war 1 to defend the city. The fortress was given the same name as the village but in colloquial speech it was often referred to as the fortress of Breendonk (village), which translates to "het fort van Breendonk" in Dutch, the "van" indicating the genitive form of belonging to the village of Breendonk. So it would make more sense to call it "Fortress Breendonk" or "the Fortress of Breendonk" in English, but admittedly in the end this is a semantic detail. On a side note, the fortress is open to visitors on most days and makes for an interesting albeit sobering experience. Keep up the good work, your channel's professionalism is of unique quality! Greetings from Belgium, T.

I've been a steam locomotive driver on a museum line here in the Netherlands. We had locs and cars from everything in the past, including these box cars in which people where transported with in the second world war. We were very much aware of this but it was something so important to show to people what also happened in way passed times, the nice things but also the bad things.
We had no signs on them indicating that these were used for that but quite a lot of people asked if these were used in the war as they recognised them from photos. We always were fully open about that matter and would show them the inside even, they could climb in if one prefered to do so. I'ts quite a sad feeling the first time you open up such a car and stand there thinking of all these terrible things that happened in there, how many men, women, children died in those cars? They were in those cars sometimes for up to 14 days in a row, no food, no toilet, nothing. Many died before even reaching a camp.
We never stored anything in these cars, in others yes but not in those, just out of respect for all those transported in them and those that died in there and eventually in a camp. May they rest in peace.
    Nice story Mark, thank you.

    • @77thTrombone
      @77thTrombone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Why were there no signs for these cars, do you think?
At the risk of "leading the witness," I wonder if maybe because the museum's focus was "railway technology," while these cars represented a difficult time with underlying social issues?
It's certainly good that you explained them to people.
Question, since you were a driver: is Walschaerts' valve gear even permitted in NL?
Doe de groeten aan de koningin!

I am glad you kept the same music. It always forbods a part of history and a story of humanity. Sometimes inhumanity.

The engineer screwed up. He should have blown off the locomotive boiler's steam, after the train stopped. It would have taken time to build up pressure again and the train would have been stationary for that duration. :-o

Thanks for continuing to share the stories of Nazi atrocities and the brave people who fought them. Today, too many people are willing to embrace fascism again as they demonize "The Other."
