This short little peak at a small regional TV programme in the late 70's/early 80's in the U.K. just shows the quality and variety of groups playing great music, people who can look back, try to explain it to their kids and they just don't understand. We were the lucky ones. Laugh manically........
What's progression in the 21th century? blandness!! We had the best live shows on tv back then. This ws my era, sadly only the clash and specials made it to Belfast. Miss joy division but ws at the Jam's 2nd last gig.
deathfromabove77 Right? Meanwhile, back in states, we were treated to a steady diet of shit like Styx, REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, Foreigner, Rush, etc.
+Emoliian Thom Not quite you had a lot of good NYC bands such as Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Television, Lou reed, the Ramones, Richard Hell and the voidoids, Blondie, Talking Heads et al
I was only in junior high school then but i loved the post punk fallout cos bands exploded! it was different world when you tappd into it & explored the bands !My main man was JOHN PEEL`rest in peace !I use to buy albums tbh...mainly cos it was value for money!! it was exciting times ..but vinyll back in now!!
throw in the damned and you have the greatest video clip segment in history- the clash are spectacular but here the Jam own even strummer and the boys- the jam are absolutely playing like they are about to meet death- stunningly great!!!!
Only seen an edited version of Tommy Gun before and I hadn't realised it was cut- it's a tribute to Headon's drumming that it was possible to do it seamlessly!
certainly was VIBRANT ENGLAND...I never saw The Specials but I dig their music...late seventies England...definitely was something in the air...as for Sid he was probably cooking Guinea pigs somewhere in an English garden...
Carlos Pires : Can't disagree with you there. Big Audio Dynamite was a shambles. Don't know anything about 'Fun Boy Three,' but the name is quite telling. New Order and the Style Council weren't bad alternatives at all though.
@cloggerhoo ive got the Jam live at the royal court 82...prob not that gig....on vinyl......but Jam sadly will never live again......weller to much out on his own...love him to bits but the past will always remain there..........but fuck echo arena sev years ago when he sang entertainment........WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Not so much, Ayatollah Khomeini was on the news a lot in the 70s - Iran's been newsworthy for a long time. Say Ayatollah (though he was Imam Khomeini to anyone in Iran) to anyone my generation and we're likely to think Khomeini automatically and likely link the name with the Shah of Iran too. Then in the late 80s he issued a Fatwa against Salman Rushdie.
Classic Strummer forgetting and ballsing up the words, great energy though. Mick's lead playing here is way off, leaving out the important underpinning licks during the chorus, The Jam smashed it as always.
I don't think we knew how good we had it from 78-82 in Britain.
you had all the good stuff ive got shit like justin beiber
Valeu
@@jawknee4088 - Not the same as BEING THERE, 1976, 1977 etc etc. Watching it all happen, live, in smokey halls and pubs.
I think that its all safe & corporate now & has been for some time:-(
Zelda Fitzgerald Musically wise was good but I dont think that they were socially especialy from 79 onwards......!
the Clash , the Specials , the Jam and Joy Division on the same show !! OMG how much would we pay now to see that
It's not the same day.
No this is a compilation
The youth of today have no idea what music is
I think that its all safe & corporate now, for which it has been for some time:-(
Darren McCabe I think that The Jam & Joy Division were on the same episode

ABSOLUTELY! POW! BAAM! BOOM!
NO NO No. Something Else was BBC2 at about 18.30 till 19.15 on Monday nights, maybe Tuesday.
What's progression in the 21th century? blandness!! We had the best live shows on tv back then. This ws my era, sadly only the clash and specials made it to Belfast. Miss joy division but ws at the Jam's 2nd last gig.
Tremendous performance by The Jam!
There's another film of them on Something Else doing The Eton Rifles. It was the first time we'd ever heard it.
The jam best of em all
Head & shoulders above the rest
Well well well. I'd never seen Joy Division live before. Very impressed. Great performances.
I've felt the way he looks many times. He's got a profound sadness.. Love this.
My good taste in music brought me here.
This is awesome! Because some of us remember what it was like to hate disco. Oh, my disaffected youth.
I swear joy division was the best.
No way the jam 😂
Bruce foxton bass....the intensity is amazing
All pretty unique really - good times.
Darn those Specials look proper dapper and all, great energy from all the bands!
Rip to a few of my favourite lead singers... you're gone but not forgotten...😞💔💖🔥
What a version of Man at C&A, the Specials are tight.
When music was great

+Emoliian Thom Excuse me? Rush? Shit? You're lumping them in with the wrong lot...

Been there, saw them, got the Joy Divison t-shirt
Have you got your Joy Division oven gloves?
pure class, joe we miss you
For Joy Division I notice the cameras don't focus on Ian. Were they too scared to show his 'dancing'?
Great stuff. Makes it worth waking up every morning for to face the shite the world throws at you.
back in the day, when you could get 4 great bands in one show... Damn
I wasn't but now feel old!
i've got the memories but youv'e still got the music!
Hi it was a brilliant time for music 1980 to 82
throw in the damned and you have the greatest video clip segment in history- the clash are spectacular but here the Jam own even strummer and the boys- the jam are absolutely playing like they are about to meet death- stunningly great!!!!
holy shit thank you for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joy Division
Only seen an edited version of Tommy Gun before and I hadn't realised it was cut- it's a tribute to Headon's drumming that it was possible to do it seamlessly!
I don't think I ever saw the Clash have so much hair.
Yeah , Mick's last BIG HAIR attempt - the end of his Johnny Thunders/Mott the Hoople phase !!
what a line up
Ha! I remember being really excited, all day at college, having seen the line up for that evenings programme...wasn't disappointed!
I was 1 in '79 and adored Tommy Gun!
😎🖖👊🤘🇲🇽...son de mis grupos favoritos...😀
certainly was VIBRANT ENGLAND...I never saw The Specials but I dig their music...late seventies England...definitely was something in the air...as for Sid he was probably cooking Guinea pigs somewhere in an English garden...
Oh Paul Weller flamboyant class🔥💘
Love this, live version of Funeral Pyre is, er scorching!
A great night of television.
ahhh I love all of these bands
That show was really Something Else, always got the important bands!!
4 of my 5 fav bands form those GREAT DAYS The other was TV21
Thank you D66F. I was born too late, though I've seen most of these artists in concert, I never saw them in the bands that made them great.
Really great compilation wow nice
Crying :’(
The Clash the best !!
greets from Deutschland
thank you so much!!! this means so much for an old lady.
happy birthday DAD
THE BETTER DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!
The Specials were way ahead of their time.
Mick Jones - so critical to the Clash - he punches rarely, but makes it count.
the best
TREMENDO
Thank you for posting this!
Question. Which is the worst *progression*?
The Specials - Fun Boy Three?
The Jam - Style Council?
Joy Division - New Order?
Answer. All three !
The Clash/Big Audio Dynamite
haha yeah I forgotten that one
Carlos Pires : Can't disagree with you there. Big Audio Dynamite was a shambles. Don't know anything about 'Fun Boy Three,' but the name is quite telling. New Order and the Style Council weren't bad alternatives at all though.
Carlos Pires Exactly!
New radiator
RIP Terry Hall 22'
RIP Joe, Strummed the great!!!!!!
joy makes me cry scream" someone help him"
If somebody had helped him, there wouldn't have been Joy Division.
woW.>>>...>!
These are some truly tremendous live performances. Terrible program, unbelievably good live rock n roll.
Had no idea Hooky's 'Rickenbacker' bass was a copy. Sounds great nevertheless!
Any time you watch The Jam next to their contemporaries, it just reinforces how superior they were. Different class of song writing and musicianship.
The Clash were far and away the best band of the punk era, by a long way.
The jam were better than the clash they were up their own arses
Clash and Jam sounds and act pretty the same but JD is just another league, the future!
id say joy division was the best on here
Cos it’s are world too
chuck berry........ best start at the beginning
terry hall was singing about the dangers of the ayatollahs, fuck , that is prophetic...
nothing to say Mick and Paul are the bosses
@cloggerhoo ive got the Jam live at the royal court 82...prob not that gig....on vinyl......but Jam sadly will never live again......weller to much out on his own...love him to bits but the past will always remain there..........but fuck echo arena sev years ago when he sang entertainment........WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Meaning if he's not singing, they don't show him.
@tony tatsächlich richtig
Joy Division.. Hype sh#t!

i can only dream about being a teen during this, hate my generation born in 2002 complete shit
Joe sounds sick?
oh, could be
I'm sorry to say The Specials looked pretty weak after that live performance of "Tommy Gun" by The Clash.
This is the only performance The Clash made for the BBC.
when the specials come on: oh my god, this is cool...who the fuck is/was the CAMERAMAN?...god...
Alright...what do i listen to next?
Classic Strummer forgetting and ballsing up the words, great energy though. Mick's lead playing here is way off, leaving out the important underpinning licks during the chorus, The Jam smashed it as always.
They just don't make music like they used to.
one band missed stiff little fingers
Yes!!!!!!!!
Roddy was drunk
None of your X factor shit real music from real bands i was 18 in 79 i remember watching this program it was the dogs...........
naoime where the fuck do you get punk rock from these classic bands
I wouldn't have wanted to been Joy Division, going on after The Jam. Or The Specials for that matter, having to play after The Clash
Not all these performances were on the same day, it's a compilation.
Joy Division is better than The Jam
