A bit late to the party, But I love how both the Sanka and the Skyly J2 (Teacher's fighter plane) are based primarily on japanese interceptors that never went into mass production: the Sanka was based on the J7W1 Shinden which was the imperial Japanese navy's answer to the American B-29s but came in too late and the atomic bombings prevented it from going into mass production.
While the Skyly J2 was primarily based on the Ki-87, which was the Imperial Japanese Army's answer to the B-29 problem, however just like the Shinden, the Ki-87 came in too late and the atomic bombings prevented it from being put into mass production and only a single prototype ever flew.
The Skyly J2 strays quite a bit by adding other elements from planes such as the Bf-109, the P-51 Mustang, and some of the Russian MiG interceptor prototypes that although ultimately successful, never went into mass production just like the Shinden and Ki-87, but for a different reason as by the time they were completed, the Russian I-220 series interceptors found themselves without bombers to hunt after the fall of the Luftwaffe and were deemed unnecessary.

3:59 The Skyly D is an INCREDIBLE plane to fly in the game Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. Give it all of its best engine, wing, and armor upgrades... it is becomes lightning quick, very responsive, extremely durable and ridiculously agile. Be sure it has Long Range Gun and Guns II for most Missions to hit a difficult mark at beyond 3,000 ft.

Typically, planes with propeller s in the front aren't called 'pullers'. They are almost always called 'tractors'.

Interesting analysis. As for location, I'd assumed that the mentioned "Rostock" was Rostock, Germany - as there is a real-world location by that name that's my default assumption.
As for the J2V, another interesting feature of it is that it appears to have the engine set further back from the propeller, just forward of the wing (partially over it) while the propellers and nose are further forward, and the wing is set further back than on most planes. It appears the engine is mounted as centrally as possible, and it drives the propeller through extension shafts - maybe that's to reduce the pitch inertia, allowing it to be more maneuverable? The exhausts clearly indicate that it has the X engine mentioned, but I see it also has a round nose cowling with cowl flaps like seen on a radial - can probably assume that this is a nose-mounted annular radiator, as seen on several German designs.
Overall I'd assumed that all of this takes place in an alternate world, or at least alternate history (though possibly with real locations such as the aforementioned Rostock) in which World War II had never happened and the structure of countries, or at least the countries we know, are non-existent. It was sort of implied, from what I could tell, that these areal battles were a sort of game to entertain and pacify the public, helping to eliminate "real" warfare - hence how they feel unending, futile, and of little greater importance. Of course the combatants actually die, but they are regarded as expendable - these "Kildren" are clones of some sort that I recall some mention of being unable to grow to adulthood. This all was some of the sort of underlying thought-provoking deeper dystopian exploration of the story, which I can't claim to really understand.
My guess is that, as I assume World War II never happened in this universe/history, the sides are not descendants of the Allies and Axis, but the artists took inspiration from a variety of World War II aircraft, including various prototypes never developed for various reasons (loosing the war, jets taking over) to imagine what piston aircraft might have looked like with more development, had jet-powered aircraft not become the focus during and shortly after World War II. A lot of the technology in this movie aside from the aircraft looks even more advanced, from the real-life "jet age," maybe there is some sort of agreement or rule for these competing entities (not actually countries at war but companies I could see as more comparable to football teams or maybe Formula 1 race teams) to not use turbine engines.

A few months later, I happened to be on a late-night Wikipedia loop and came across the article for the Fisher P-75 Eagle, a late-war US prototype design, that with some minor differences extremely closely resembles the J2V. Same shape, same wing position, set-back engine (though a W-configuration instead of X). Seems like something nobody's ever heard of, but I have little doubt it is the actual inspiration for the J2V. At 4:38 you actually have a picture of the P-75, the one with the counter-rotating props (just like the movie plane), but don't address it. The J2V has elements of other aircraft added to it, but the overall shape and configuration is clearly the P-75. Likewise the P-75 was described as a wonder weapon, extreme performance compared to it's contemporaries, but it was deemed unnecessary and didn't enter production. Interestingly, both this and the Sanka B has some changes compared with the original aircraft they were based on, for example both real aircraft had cooling issues, and the movie versions have more radiators (J2V) or larger side scoops (Sanka B) to address this, and the Shinden had a problem with the very powerful engine pulling to one side - the Sanka B had contra-rotating props, which would have resolved that. I think what they did was found various little-known late-war prototypes that were never developed but showed great promise, and improved upon them in various ways (particularly their real-world shortcomings). Likewise the flying-wing bombers seen are similar to the YB-35, which was from the same era and never produced.

@@quillmaurer6563 Yeah there is for sure some P-75 in there, i gave an image to Japanophile but i think i just never went in detail because he was already doing that thing where i think he was going numb to the amount i was talking about planes at that point.
In general though yes i think that is the idea they went with, basically "Ok war is over but we have prototypes with problems" then the Kildren and proxy war essentially push those into a form of production where the problems were solved, i think you are very much on point with that guess.

Someone pointed out another aircraft that is an even closer match for the J2V: Kawasaki Ki-64, a late war Japanese prototype never developed. Still not identical, some notable differences. This has the annular inlet behind the propellers and wing/belly radiators, while the ki-64 used experimental wing skin surface cooling. This has an X engine while the ki-64 had inverted V-12s. Ki-64 had two engines, one in front one behind the cockpit - cant tell for sure if this has the rear engine or not. This has elliptical-tip wings more tapered and dihedraled than the ki-64. Feels plausible for this to be a later version ki-64 with conventional radiators, more powerful engines, and higher performance wing. The same idea I suggested earlier of these aircraft in this movie being developments of obscure late WWII prototypes.

I think it's really the point here: the technology used is spectacular but likely decades behind the actual tech.
It only took a few years to graduate to jet engines after ww2. In fact the Nazis had working Messerschmitt Jetplane prototypes that they hoped would gain back air superiority even in small numbers.
The whole war is set up as entertainment. The teacher is never in actual competition as (tell me if I'm wrong) the screw it's flying in the final dogfight world be impossible even for the best tractor plane.
It looks like something a little bird helo could pull off but not a turbo plane.

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@teahousereloaded Yeah, that's my speculation - that this is some sort of league, sort of like NASCAR or Formula 1, but with combat instead of racing. There are rules on what technologies are and aren't allowed, which (like NASCAR for a while) is well behind tech available in their world outside this league. In particular not allowing any turbine engines, all aircraft must be piston-powered.
I would agree that the maneuver he was doing, spiraling around his falling victim while shooting at him, doesn't seem possible for a fixed-wing airplane. I got the sense it was an exaggeration, this movie not quite strictly adhering to the laws of physics, and suggesting that this pilot is absurdly skilled in order to be able to pull off maneuvers that aren't physically possible.

For me, the teachers plane is a mix of Seafire FR 47, and Ki-87. The chin paint job is similar to the BF-109 G-6. It has the cockpit design of a Ta 152 c-3, has a similar primary body color to the p-51, and has the what seems to be exhaust on the sides similar to a Wyvern. The teachers plane is literally every ww2 prop plane put into one.

The final dogfight always struck me as showing an impossible maneuver.
Please help me understand something here: I love the movie but I'm not well versed in ww2 era planes.
So the teacher does an impossible maneuver, showing his plane is decades ahead in technology (maybe even of modern jets). This is proof to me that he is just there for macabre fun, underlined by him shooting parachuting pilots, but never in real danger.
The teacher gets outsmarted with the stalling maneuver, but manages to spin his plane sideways and pivoting around the other plane in a screw normal to the flight direction in an insanely short radius.
I always understood this maneuver as being utterly impossible with second world war tech and that the teacher's plane is a reimagining of a past era plane with modern technology, much like a Singer Porsche today.
This proves to me that the war is pure entertainment and that the teacher didn't really take part. He acts like a director keeping the sport interesting for the public, by balancing the two factions. That's why he defects, when one company gets the upper hand. That's why the giant bombers are spectacularly impractical.
Possibly his plane can't even be shot down and has modern composite armour underneath the aluminium or something similar.
I don't understand enough about 2ww era planes to confidently make this argument. I would be super happy about any comment.

Very good point actually, i feel dumb for not mentioning that but that would also mean the J2 was more durable and lighter in some big ways and also visually pushes it towards the jet-age we think of as superseding the prop age of WW2
