    I’ll be honest: when I found out it was a big PVP event to start I was slightly annoyed. D&D pvp is fine in the course of a story but I was imagining some basic arena fights.

      Its very strange that a someone doing Kickstarter project would do a paid sponsorship. One would assume that Kickstarter is a place where creators with a novel idea and a passion, but not the means, could go to get funding to create their project, directly from the audience that wants to see that idea to fruition. But with Humblewood, this doesn't seen to be the case.
      Deck of Many's advertising a project like this would leave me to assume that they had enough money in the first place, or at least enough spare capital laying around that they could afford to advertise a project that's already hit its goal. The alternative is that they're using kickstarter funds to do advertising, which I can't imagine would make the backers happy, but IM SURE that's DEFINITELY not the case, right?
      So this begs the question: Why advertise for a project that's already hit its goal? Certainly the purpose of putting an RPG on Kickstarter is to find enough of an audience to justify doing a small-to-mid scale print. But by looking at Humbewood's Kickstarter, they've already got their audience, and then some. So why keep advertising?
      It all puts a very bad taste in my mouth and I can't figure out why.

      I would agree. A noble who owes you can be milked for all sorts of privileges that would normally be more costly elsewhere. What is more you can have a monopoly on his needs. Maybe he needs a keep on his land cleared of..."vermin". Yout price? A more than fair amount of the treasure found during. Perhaps you need an item that would normally be off limits to a commoner like you...even if you are quite capable. Noble to the rescue. Got a rival you need to put some indirect pressure on? Yeah...

    That's maybe the most realistic thing I've ever seen in dnd.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      In medieval times, no one was all that well off. The nobles had a better, yes, but not by too terribly much. Castles, for instance, would be pretty small affairs for any noble except an emperor or something. The expansive gothic castles we often think of were later creations; if you were, say, a Knight, you'd be lucky to have a stone "castle" that had as much square footage as a modern suburban home.
      Moreover, being "of nobility" is not the same as having all the benefits of a landowner. Since, you know, there's only so much land for a lord to bequeath to all his children. To keep holdings consolidated, most of that wealth got inherited by the eldest son. The secondary sons got basically nothing. They had to make their own way in life.
      For instance, it's thought that the First Crusade was as successful for the Crusaders as it was because the leaders of the armies were all Princes, rather than the Kings that fought in later Crusades. The Princes had a vested interest in capturing as much Holy Land as they could, so they could forge Crusader States out of them that they individually would control. While piety certainly played a role, the First Crusade was very much about wealth and land.

    • @vincentmuyo
      @vincentmuyo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Well, he's got land, which is worth a lot on its own.
      ... As long as it comes with the customary people living there providing an income for the land owner. Which probably was the rub in this case.

      This reminds me way too much of my WHFRP campaign... although we did eventually work our way into having lots of cash, mostly through fixing bets on jousting tournaments that my own sergeant-at-arms (another player) won, and by becoming a merchant that trades in the silver mines in my family's domain (only slightly illicitly). The problem with WHFRP is that it is ruthless at reminding you that you need to _spend_ money to live the noble's lifestyle. And if you aren't living the noble's lifestyle then you're effectively, not a noble.

    • @swordcrab3181
      @swordcrab3181 5 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      Yeah, but whose mistake was it? If you specifically promised "part of the prize money" and the people accepted without checking if there was money in the prizes, isn't it their mistake? You've paid them part of the prize money, there is no money, thus their payment is zero.
      That said, antagonizing people who have helped you (even if it was in exchange for salary) is a bad idea, so even if you could play it like that you probably shouldn't. What you should do is: you find a way to pay them anyway and mention the reason for the delay. "Thanks for your patience, I hadn't realized there wasn't any prize money, here are your promised wages with a little bit extra." Make them a little bit loyal to you, because even if they're in it for the money now they know that your word is good and that you can be trusted to pay them even if your plans don't go as planned.

    I love running a tournament arc for players. Generally, my campaigns are more RP focused, so the Battle Royale gives some of the more strategic, less social players a chance to shine. And when they win, they get to roleplay as "the champion" which is an easy and fun role to play, easing them into more social aspects of the game

    You had LAND and a title of NOBILITY! that means you can tax the people living on the land. You don't tax for money, but for agricultural, horticultural, and/or mineral resources. Then bring some of the resources to market and get GOLD! rinse and repeat. No selling of the rewards necessary. You could tell them you will give them 50gp more if they are willing to wait just a bit longer.

  • @MiagolioMaxwell
    @MiagolioMaxwell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your only mistake was that you didn't Lawful Evil hard enough. You needed to draft contracts specifically promising the 100gp rewards out of the prize money and exclusively claimable through gold pieces acquired by way of tournament winnings. In the event that you are given enough currency (in gold piece denomination, specifically) to pay, you will. If you are given any amount less than the cumulative 200gp to pay the contracted parties, you would be obligated to pay however much is possible exclusively from your winnings in gold pieces, split equally between the parties, rounded down. In the event that you are rewarded with no gold pieces (no money rewards whatsoever or money rewards that do not specifically include gold pieces), you are absolved of responsibility to pay as per the contract's wording specifying gold pieces to be the sole form of reward claimable by the recipients. With further fine print, have the contracted parties waive their rights to take legal action should they believe the contract has caused them any personal harm, destruction or loss of property or well-being, etc.
    TL;DR: Learn to devil.

    WoD is much better for PVP as it leans more heavily into intrigue (and is just overall just a more "ROLE" and less "playing game" system). I would only run it online tho and you'd probably need an assistant DM (your girlfriend/boyfriend) as you'd essentially need to run a bunch of parallel 1 team sessions where each person is actively scheming against each other.

  • @OgenB
    @OgenB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How I run D&D PvP.
    All players are given a dream pre-session. Each dream is different and unique.
    One dream tells the player that in order to survive the dungeon that they undertake the next day, two players of their party MUST be dead before they leave the dungeon.
    In reality all players have this same dream, but no one knows this. With this in mind the players will treat each other as innocents, and also try to act innocent themselves if another murder-dream-haver is found out.
    Players such as bards and wizards can use cunning magic to cause accidents to happen.
    Fighters barbs and pallys can just murder people. It becomes a game of brute force and deception.
    Obviously this is for one shots only.

  • @giraffedragon6110
    @giraffedragon6110 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    honestly this is how you do it. It's not just straight pvp at that point depending on level, class, and race you'll have straight advantage. I mean for one Paladin would do really well considering things like compelled duel making them have to approach you, all of your smites, your 16-18 AC, etc. Wizards or sorcers who roll high enough on the sleep spell and had powerful AOE spells after make for brutal foes ya can't cunning dodge something if you're magically compelled to asleep.

    We tried out a pvp tournament with duels and group match ups once. All characters were level 20, only material from the official books was accepted. All the battles were fought on a 90ft square arena.
    All I can say is, that it was basically a rock-paper-scissors thing with a coin flip. You would think a lvl 20 moon circle druid would win every match because unlimited wildforms, yes? Nah. All it takes is a monk (any subclass, really) to win the initiative roll and stunlock the druid to death. Then again, a totem barbarian doesn't even need to win the initiative, it just has to wait that either the monk burns out all its ki points trying to stun it and then beat them to a pulp. Then again, without any ability to stop the moon circle druid from using wildform, eventually it would out-tank the barbarian.
    Then there's the zealot barbarian. The only hope to kill them is to get them to die from exhaustion in a way or another, and even then they can have +13 to constitution saves.
    3v3 matches were a lot more interesting. Casters dominated. pretty much. Our team of 2 warlocks and 1 chronurgy wizard blasted away the two other teams, but when a caster team was against another team of casters, things went wild. The counterspell game was like a game of chess, but in teams of three. The endgame was hilarious: when some characters were Feebleminded, some dead and the rest had burned away all their spell slots, the cantrips became the game winners. One character was beaten to death with a crystal ball, though.

    This may be an old video, but technically speaking, by the players Gold from the prize money you won, you made no mistake. Because you didn't get prize money, you owed them nothing. After all, they got a share of the prize money you got. In fact, both of them got all of it. By not specifying from just "your winnings" you managed to make the most lawful evil choice available, bending the rules of your own deal to suit your needs, even if based on a false assumption. Bravo at managing to stay in character without even realizing it!

    Have a friend who does PvP stuff for meetups, and was trying to think what to do next time after doing a capture the flag thing. I did recommend to do something akin to mini-games that would do things other than simply player characters running around in a map trying to kill each other. He seemed to think the idea would be too complex.
    I also just recently put up some homebrew stuff Reddit to make characters alcoholic drinking as more of an event, rather than simply saying to do a boring con check. Gave it balance for dwarves, stout halfling and sizes. Making drinking that could be something competitive, a game where drunk characters make mistakes that players can reveal things like a secret or who they might flirt with. And story hook of punishment or reward if they blackout and go missing.

  • @kennyholmes5196

    Oh, how rules-lawyer-y of you to do that. Technically, you won nothing, and you said that you'd give them 100 g *of your winnings*. Since there was no prize money, they got nothing. Had there been a prize, you'd have needed to earn at least howevermuch you bribed them with as a "for later" in order to see even a single coin from the winnings.

    See, if those other two players were thinking in-character, and those characters were at all smart, they'd accept some sort of percentage on your lands' earnings in place of 100 gp up front. Long term gains would be much, much higher, and a steady income is much better than a single windfall from a real-life perspective (which the characters would have).

    You know I’m in a pvp game as well and it’s supposed to be a free for all but I’m teaming with some one in our group(it’s a game we’re different dnd games collide and the people from the other game are npc) it’s really interesting. There are these servents you can have which are Uber powerful and you can’t kill the actual person unless you kill there servent first. It’s all weaved into our campaign so the reward coralats whith the character you are. You get 1 rule free wish, the word and is included. So far I got a assasen servent which is perfect for me Sence I’m a rouge. I partnered up whith a guy with 2 servents a king and a queen so he’s op. I have to fight him at the end so I’m going to try to end it as fast as possible. Wish me luck.

    My group does some straight up PVP with the only real change being death has no consequence and everything is recharged between fights. It's a lot of fun to be able to play to the death like that and also blow through all your spells with reckless abandon. It also helps learn combat very quickly as well as the combat strengths and weaknesses of your fellow players. I recommend anyone just draw up a simple arena and try fighting it out between characters for fun.

    I was playing a halfling rouge. The Ranger didn’t like me too much and stole my thieves tools. I went after him and he stabbed me. After that I was hiding behind the bard as we traveled to the city so the Ranger wouldn’t know I was there. After we all get there. I stay in the same room as the bard during the long rest. At night I snuck over to the rangers room and stole a potion. The next morning the Ranger comes banging on the door. He had heard the chit chat. That begins a 1v1 cage match enforced by the mages wall of force. Once the wall was down (about when the guards showed up) the bard used dimensional door and basically threw me out of it. And that was the end of that character, I basically considered them dead for all intents and purposes.

    Okay, here's you pay the people you bribed without selling either prize. Given the feudal setting, you find out if the land you were granted has serfs or tenants working the land already or if you can lease the fields to free peasants. Then you find a merchant bank to loan you the money in exchange for the income you generate from your feudal holding until the debt is paid off with interest. It's a perfect lawful evil move.

    One time I made a dnd game kinda like Pokemon where my players could get monsters and use them, and certain fights would use certain monsters or monster types, like flying fights, underwater fights, and as my players progressed they would be able to get instead of levels, challenge rating to be able to obtain more powerful monsters to use. It was great until my players broke the system with a bit old idea that’s way to complex to explain here.

  • @FrozenHawkHunter

    So what did you sell? This does sound fun. I'm starting lost mine of phandelver. But with an arena fight as the hook to get the player into the real game. More so I can tweak the story once I get to see the players character sheets then anything else. The size of the group could very from 4 to 8. I'm a bit nervous about DMing this. It will be the first kind of structured game we have played. Oh and the first game I don't have to jump from my story to loot gen app to rule book to app on monsters and back to the story.

    Well....you're nobility, with land. It would be pretty easy to raise some money to pay those guys off. Go collect some taxes from the people living on your new land, or go to the town on your land and raise tariffs. Hire someone to start cutting down trees on your new land and sell the timber, or do this for grain or grapes for wine...there are so many ways to raise money for nobility I don't think you'd have to sell anything and the two PCs should also understand this.
