So I've been contemplating installing Bazzite, mostly because I prefer Gnome over KDE. I'm just wondering if Gnome runs in Wayland mode? Asking this because I really need proper fractional scaling for my external monitor and that just doesn't work with Xorg. Also, have you tried streaming through Steam Link. Does it work?
Yes gnome works on Wayland I only tried steam link once and it was pretty slow for FPSs I tried. I switched to moonlight which was a little better but still not great for fast paced games
Thank you for your answer. I've decided to make the switch. Having Gnome and my favourite plug-ins available next to the Steam Deck UI is a huge plus, and the external monitor support will be better on Wayland. Instead of using Steam Link, I'll probably buy an extra dock for my TV. You've made an excellent video, providing the information that I was looking for, well done!
@@udekmp868I think it is an issue with the kde version because I tried that and it would not work, the gnome version works fine with the exception of waydroid not showing on pipewire despite declaring that it is the active wayland desktop. chimeraos or opensuse tumbleweed is still a better experience.
@@JustinGarrisonI definitely believe that it is more of an issue with fedora kde itself than the fault of the deck. I had the same problems on nobara which is fedora 38 based running kde. It broke and stopped working.
How big does the flash drive need to be? I ask cause I am noticing two conflicting things. - The github guide page seems to say you need one with at least 5GB of space, (but) - The actual image file of Bazzite is less than 1GB in size. (718.9MB)
Thanks for the guide. Were you able to connect your controllers to it? I am having problems connecting my keyboard and Ps4 controllers. I am currently on the KDE. I switched from gnome to kde because I had some problems with the installation of some flatpaks. My Basilisk hyperspeed mouse connects just fine but the controller and keyboard keep disconnecting. Thanks.
I was interested in this os, but just as with Chimera os which I'm currently running on my desktop PC, Gnome is the reason I'm looking for a different os. I absolutely HATE the Gnome desktop. I used to use Holoiso, but had to switch when it got abandoned Now what I would never do is use something other than the Steam os on my Steam Deck, if I could I'd have the official Steam os installed on my main PC, but since it's not available, I have to settle for this clones
Bazzite has integrated TDP control and built in Waydroid to run android apps. Chimera works fine on steam deck as far as I know, but it needs a third party TDP control app
Do you know what the procedure is for doing this with a nVidia desktop machine? Whenever i do an install on my system it always boots to desktop instead of "gamemode" .... am i crazy, dumb, or is do you know if this is the intended function??
@@JustinGarrisonbummer! Thanks for the insight though. Guess I'll either have to finally cave in buying a new (to me) AMD GPU or just use big picture for now.
Basically, Game mode requires Linux's new Wayland display system, instead of the old X11 display system. But NVidia has been slow to add support for Wayland to their proprietary Linux drivers. Unlike NVidia, AMD open-sourced a lot of their driver code on Linux, so people added Wayland support a while ago, and it's pretty mature now. Progress is being made on an open-source NVidia driver, but without NVidia helping, a lot of reverse engineering work has needed to be done. Thankfully light is finally shining at the end of the tunnel, and a functioning open-source NVidia driver shouldn't be too far off now. But it still means Wayland support on NVidia GPUs is stuck until either NVidia gets their act together, or the open-source driver is finished.
@@JustinGarrison no, in virtual keyboard, it does not work the symbols in desktop mode, I have already tried everything, and the only thing it does is to put a tabbed space. what is normal text if it works
volume down = left ... you push volume up = right also the latest version sucks and is not working, buggy as hell, gets stuck all the time, after installation wither stuck in setup loop, nu audio, or constant crashes.
Sorry to hear it's failing. I don't think the offline installer is up to date. Come by the discord server and we can help with the error discord.bazzite.gg
Being able to layer packages with ostree makes it so you don't have to reinstall things like AUR packages after each update, and bazzite is often faster with kernel updates than valve. I've also had a bug with remote play solved by changing to bazzite, and haven't had a single drawback yet.
thank you so much for this video mate, clear and simple to follow. helped me loads!!
Oh yes I love gnome ❤ this is must have for me
Yo, thank you for helping! I tried doing it myself, wondering why it was hanging at Deployment starting, but it actually takes alot of time.
I have my old spare steam deck after I bought the OLED model. I may install this on it just for kicks

*does wizardry and installs on a 64gb deck anyway*
Honestly, I had no issues getting it to run on my 64bg deck.
The issue wasn't installing it, but it would only boot half the time and have filesystem corruption errors. How has your experience been?
@@udekmp868I think it is an issue with the kde version because I tried that and it would not work, the gnome version works fine with the exception of waydroid not showing on pipewire despite declaring that it is the active wayland desktop.

I couldn’t get the gnome version to boot after the first update on 64gb

The online installer disk can be 1gb but if you use the offline installer it needs to be a lot bigger
Can we dual boot with Windows on our decks? Or is it a stand-alone OS?
It’s a standalone OS but you can run windows 2 go from an external drive and boot from that

I haven’t had a problem with kb/m or wired Xbox controllers. I have a Bluetooth 8bitdo controller but I haven’t tried it yet

Is there any actual benefit to this or is it more of a gimmick on Deck? /gen
If you use the deck for anything outside of steam I’ve found it incredibly useful
wonder if installing gnome or kde version would differ anything at all in benches I suppose.
pretty nice progress with the recent 09/06 update
In game mode it doesn’t matter because it doesn’t load the desktop either way
I'm having display issues we're I can't see everything while installing. Parts of the windows are cut of.
Disregard, I see it talks about not scaling properly.

There’s currently a bug with nvidia drivers and game mode that makes it crash. Until nvidia fixes the driver you won’t be able to use game mode. Sorry
