Excellent beginner vid. I had no clue about the two handed option and I'm over 20 hours in

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad two handed was a useful tip for you. There are so many controls in the game to learn and experiment with. I think that's part of the reason it's so popular, as it gives you many different ways to fight enemies.

You should have mentioned roll buffering, which helps you control the timing of your roll with more precision. You'll notice that both rolling and sprinting are on the same button. One is a press, the other is a hold. But because it works this way, the game doesn't actually read your button press, it checks whether or not you _released_ the button to determine if you're trying to sprint or roll.
You'll also notice that there is a small window of time after you start holding the button before you actually start sprinting. This is the window that the game is checking for a button release for a roll. If you release the button at any point during this window, a roll will immediately come out, but the window closes once you start sprinting.
So you input the roll just before you think you'll need to, and then you can release the button at exactly the right moment to dodge. This gives you an "extra" opportunity to get your dodge off if your initial timing was bad, and because you don't have to first press and then release the button to trigger the dodge, it comes out a little bit faster, too.

Thanks for taking the time to share that information. For me, I suppose I naturally hold the button until the roll starts, rather than click. But that may just be because I've played the game for so long, it's become second nature.

I am not a software programmer, but I think this is a TERRIBLE way to have an in-game character move...
The game is waiting to see what I want to do?? What the fokken hell? 🙄🙄🙄
If I am wrong, then why is Elden Ring the ONLY game I have ever played, in which I die (countless times too) because in-game movement is "too slow"? Because 9 proverbial times out 10 I die because my Tarnished reacts too slow to my mouse and keyboard input.

@@ibizenco It's not uncommon to have single inputs for multiple functions, and some games have more functions than controllers have buttons.
It's not "waiting" to see what you will do; the dodge is executed on the very first frame of button release. it's a hold-check, the game is simply determining whether you are pressing or holding the button. These types of checks are incredibly common in game design.
You're not dying because the in-game movement is too slow; the game is designed entirely around its mechanics and the speed of play. You're dying because your timing is bad. Dodging in FromSoft games is not about moving out of the way of attacks, because the attack tracking will make the attack hit you, anyway (which is an actual design flaw), it's about dodging the instant you get hit and using the invincibility frames of your dodge to avoid damage.

Nice info there, thanks for sharing. This said, I wonder if the issue here is playing on PC with keyboard. From what I've read previously, ER plays nicer on a controller setup, so perhaps it feels odd to a PC player because there's a seperate key for the roll? So on a controller, we have a shared button for two functions.

@@GrubmagnetRing I've never tried playing on a keyboard, is it even possible to map dodge and sprint to different buttons? It seems like they're hard-coded on the same input given how it works, but I could be wrong.
Honestly I'm not even sure how it would work. The game is obviously coded for them to be on the same input, so they might need to use entirely different code if those functions are separated, which doesn't seem like a great solution.

I would like to see an "experiment".
Can you hit those "Gatefront Ruins" soldiers with their large rectangular shield on their shield (making your weapon "bounce off") and then try to evade getting hit by them?
I would like to see how fast your Tarnished moves, after you have pressed the appropriate button.

I'm not sure why this is of interest or worth a video? Movement speed, as far as I'm aware is governed by your endurance level and weight of gear?

@@GrubmagnetRing I have been paying attention many times, and - as I wrote - why am I unable (9 times out of 10) to avoid getting hit by those Gatefront Ruins soldiers with their large rectangular shield (after I hit them on their shield, even on purpose)?
No matter how much I hit the F-key, or the spacebar, of my keyboard (like a madman), I _WILL_ get hit by their spear.
Why does my Tarnished "roll-and-dodge" only half a second after I hit the F-key?
Time is ESSENTIAL in this game, so if I hit a key, my Tarnished must do what I want IMMEDIATELY.
That is why I posted my initial reply.
Why is this game this "slow"? That is SO frustrating.
I don't mind dying because I am bad in fighting, but when I die because my Tarnished does not react fast enough (even while I am hitting my keyboard like a lunatic out of sheer frustration), then I get "pissed".
There is something wrong with Elden Ring -no, NOT with my PC hardware (or game settings; Raytracing is off for example) or with my build. This game is just too "slow".
I have never seen this "slow-ness" in other games.
Elden Ring is a terrible game.

I don't know why ER rolls work the way they do, but that's the constraints we have to work with. Rather than hit the shield, wait until they attack you and roll through the attack so you can counter from behind. Or shoot them for range with a bow or cast a spell. There are many ways to take out an enemy. I'm sorry you don't like ER. I've spent many a happy hour exploring the world and I don't mind the combat system. I do tend to mix things up with magic and melee though. I do tend to take out armored enemies with a ranged spell as it's just faster.

Ah thanks! It's from my days playing Gears of War Horde, back in the day. The grubs (nickname for the enemies) would always seem to swarm me more than a friend I played it with. I said something like: 'flaming heck, I'm like a Grub Magnet here!' And then I thought that was quite a nice gamertag to use 🙂
