    Dude, the FX6 shoots 4K120. It just has to be in S&Q mode. Meaning you don't get audio. So not sure if you need that. Other than that, griping about the lowlight performance (which you should have known before you purchased it) is an irrelevant con. It's not like they changed the base ISO's after they launched the camera. The camera is sub $2000 US with a super 35mm sensor. Everything you're comparing it to is a full frame. I don't know, I feel that people don't fully understand the camera before they buy it. It sounds like you need to sell your FX30 and your A74 and grab the A7S3 (which literally does everything you're asking of both your current cameras). Just my 2 cents.

  • @AllThingsFilm1
    @AllThingsFilm1 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Comparing dual base ISO between the FX30 and the A7Siii, FX3 and A7iv is your worst talking point. The A7Siii costs twice as much as the FX30. The FX3 costs more than twice as much. And the A7iv costs over $700 more than the FX30. So, of course those other cameras are going to have better specs. And yes having a second base of ISO 2500 does make the FX30 less sensitive in low light situations. But, is it a bad thing? No. Bring lights. I find it funny when people talk about low light abilities of cameras but seemingly always fail to mention - LIGHTS!
    I have the FX30. And myself, along with most every other user of the FX30 that I've met like it as well. I am looking to go to a higher spec cinema camera. But, I will be keeping the FX30. In the right hands, you can achieve a lot with most any camera.
    I also have an issue with these "watch before you buy" videos. The thinking behind them is quite presumptuous. You assume that your experience with the product - in this case the FX30 - should have any affect on the decision making of your viewers. I've seen too many users who don't know what they're doing. Simply because you have the camera in your hand doesn't mean you're using it to its best abilities. TH-cam is filled with these "watch before you buy" videos. They are literally meaningless because I have no idea if the content creator actually knows how to use the product to its fullest. Putting "watch before you buy" is the ultimate click bait title. And serves no actual purpose other than click bait.

      You aren’t wrong, but at sporting events specifically, you can’t just bring lights to shine on players and properly expose the video. You are forced to work with whatever the environment gives you, which is often indoors or outdoors at night with minimal gym/stadium lighting. That is why a lower base ISO really is that big of a deal in regards to sports videography, which is the purpose of this channel.

    *Just got my FX30 a few days ago, I love it as I'm stepping up from the a6400 and I wanted a Video only camera and before the FX30 the A7C was something I was going to get until this was announced. Plus it works with the same lens as my a6400. It's a Complicated Camera for Me as I've never owned a Cinema Camera, but there's no Perfect camera this is a perfect camera for me, but it's always good to get perspective from others whom have used higher priced camera's and give their Pro's and Con's*

    I think mixed with a full frame (a7siii or fx3) This is a perfect sports B cam. Keep the wide lenses on the full frame, and use the crazy crop in 4k120/apsc to make some full frame lenses REALLY long. Got one the other week while shooting some race cars and it turned my 70-200 into a 480mm at the long end, which was actually totally doable handheld with the stabilization

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s exactly what I do often times too! I’ll keep the A7IV on deck with a wide lens to get into benches and film portions of the event where I’m closer to players like pregame and postgame then use the FX30 with a 70-200 for game action and take advantage of the crop for reach.

  • @gingersmedia
    @gingersmedia ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I pre ordered the FX30 on release day as well, I shoot mostly automotive work like drag racing and car showcase videos so wee have lots of the same needs and criteria from a camera. I will say that almost every gripe I could have with the low light performance is solved by a combination of switching to S-cinetone if I need to go over 4000-5000 ISO in slog-3 and also using the neat video plugin for noise reduction if I'm shooting in literal darkness and trying to pull a usable image out of it. Fast glass is also the easiest answer like you said. I daily drive the sigma 18-35mm f1,8 which is an amazing lens for this camera and will be picking up the sigma 50-100mm f1.8 as well

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 isn’t available for e-mount I don’t believe but if you can get away with an adapter that’s certainly a good option. I’ve had my eye on the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 forever so might have to pull the trigger on that 👀

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like the idea of swapping to a-cinetone at higher ISOs too! Haven’t done that before but I’ll have to give it a shot

    • @gingersmedia
      @gingersmedia ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@petersarellas the noise is much tighter and it’s much more monochromatic so it’s less distracting and easier to clean up. I’ve pulled passable footage from 5000-6400 ISO in S-Cinetone using neat video for noise reduction, you can typically get all the way up to 2000-2500 in S-Cinetone before the noise really even being an issue even though the base ISOs are only 125 and 400.

    • @gingersmedia
      @gingersmedia ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petersarellas the 18-35mm f1.8 isn’t an E mount lens either, just Canon EF and Nikon. Sigma makes a first party adapter that works specifically for their lenses to go from Canon EF to E mount and you retain every bit of performance you’d expect from a first party Sony lens. I shoot wide open at 1.8 on my 18-35 a lot of the time and it nails eye tracking like nobodies business, even in challenging lighting conditions.

    As you said, I love my FX30 because it can do so much for less than USD2000. It’s insane. Also, the built in fan is a must as overheating is unacceptable. I’m planning to buy a Tamron 70-180 F2.8 to compensate for the low light situation. 120fps is great for my usage and I’ll be shooting with this camera for a while and I bet the price won’t drop as a used camera years down the line. I love my FX30 💪💪💪💪💪

  • @Tugela60

    There is nothing wrong with the FX30 for photography, it works just fine. It is missing a few things like mechanical shutter and burst shooting, but most people doing photographic work don't really need those functions anyway.

    • @jp.audiovisual
      @jp.audiovisual ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was gonna comment the same thing, i have and unless ur doing specific studio photography work, it works above fine, i mean if your goal is taking photos for lets say a brands social media accounts and stuff like that, its overkill quality, but yeah i dont see it working in studio "e-commerce" pixel by pixel work where you need every single detail because the client will later maybe use those photos to make a big poster or something like that.
      I see this camera as a GREAT video camera if you know your work, if your a good editor and if you use it in professional sets that have lighting etc and a pretty decent photography camera if you know yout way around lightroom/photoshop.

      Hey there, yes I definitely think that the FX30 would be acceptable for that use case. I’ll often throw mine into my camera bag for that purpose if I’m going on a one-camera shoot that the A7IV is better served for because I know that both cameras are very capable.

      For beginners I’ll often recommend looking to get one of the Sony a6000 series cameras like the a6300, a6400 or a6500. They can be had pre-owned from a camera store or used online for fairly cheap and have lots of inexpensive compatible lens options.

  • @danbrockettDOP
    @danbrockettDOP ปีที่แล้ว +2

    People complaining about a high ISO of 2500. You guys crack me up. It's called lighting. ISO 12,800 is nice for extremely low light but, how much of your business as a DP are you shooting in poor or non-existent light? That's not really being a DP, that's largely being a camera pointer or a videographer. Being a cinematographer is 90% lighting. REDs (not every model, but almost all of them), Arris, even the Blackmagics. especially the Ursa 12k are all really bad looking above ISO 800, I've shot with REDs at ISO 1200-1600 and they looked awful. Cinema cameras are made for shooting scenes that are properly lit. Hence why Sony markets the FX30 as a "cinema" camera.
    If you only shoot available low light events like weddings, sports like Peter, or available light documentary filmmaking, def buy an FX3, FX6 or any other insane high ISO camera over the FX30. But really, if you are a DP, you should be spending most of your budget on lighting and grip gear and perhaps a gaffer and grips to help you out? The FX30 with good lighting looks incredible. If you are thinking of yourself as a DP, the FX30 is the perfect starter camera for you. Light that sensor and it's going to look amazing. Crank the ISO high to 2500 or higher, not so much. Task and purpose.

    Hi, thanks for a review,but it is somewhat confusing at a times... when you are talking about low light and dual base ISO, 3200 is just 1/3 of a stop more... and there are no cameras except fx3, 6 and a7s3 that go to 12800...
    Also about photography, fx6 cannot shoot photos and fx3 and a7s3 are 12 mpix cameras (I guess that is one of the reasons they can shoot 12800 iso).
    Also, fx6, although marketed as one isn't a really a cinema camera... They have those... Venice and perhaps now Burano. You can shoot film on it, but you can shoot film on a fx3... it is more of a documentary camera.
    And, as someone said earlier... apsc (or s35) sensor is the main sensor that most of the movies were shot on.

    On this camera, the dynamic range highlight is not that good. When you're filming the sky, it's completely blown out. You can actually notice that the sky is blown out with no blue definition, but what I mean by roll-off is that it goes between the highlights and back to the exposed footage and doesn't have a nice smooth transition between them. It's as if you're filming really well, and there's not a good transition between the blown-out spots and the sharpness of the blue sky. I noticed this difference when I did outdoor work with this camera on a sunny day and between the blue of the sky and the transformations when filming with this camera.

It's a sensor size, not a weakness. You just have to choose what are you willing to compromise on, same as full frame. So no, Full frame is not better, it just have other weaknesses. The end result is what matters, not your sensor size.

      I was speaking specifically to what I do regularly when I made that statement as my work often involves dimly lit situations that full frame cameras are generally better equipped to handle, but I completely agree with you that aps-c cameras are great as well and can be more advantageous in some situations.

    about to switch my a7iii for an fx 30. do you think the low light may be better on the a7iii or the fx30?

    • @ElijahJackson675
      @ElijahJackson675 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be because full frame add in a bit more light naturally than Crop sensor

    I got it yesterday, and the low light is simply inadequate. So I am using a7iv.

    for my budget the FX3 was out of range, for the climate of my country (Cyprus) that is over 30 degrees celsius from May to Octomber the A7IV is Useless, my only option is the FX30.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm yeah fair enough. I’ve never had my A7IV overheat but it also doesn’t usually get over 30 degrees in Canada so I hadn’t considered that.

    the fx6 has 4k 120 no?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does, but only in S&Q with no audio, unlike the FX3/FX30/A7Siii that have 4k120 with audio. I clearly forgot to include that detail. Sorry for the confusion!

      Yeah I know it’s a crop sensor but it’s still unfortunate that the dual base ISO has to be as low as it is

    I have the FX3 and FX30. I use them seamlessly with my work as my A and B cam set up. The FX6 is not a cinema camera because if we will use the industry standard definition of a cinema camera, its the ALEXAs, the REDs, the Venice line and more.

    EDIT: I forgot to specify that the FX6 does have 4K120 in S&Q mode. It doesn’t have 4k120 in regular video mode with audio recording like FX3/FX30/A7Siii. Apologies for any confusion.
    Also, a couple of worthwhile updates since this video was recorded:
    Update #1: I actually had to send my FX30 in for repair for pink artifacts on the sensor after this video was already recorded. This isn't a regular issue with this camera and could've been caused by any number of things so I didn't feel that info was particularly relevant to the video but I want to make it known for the sake of transparency.
    Update #2: This was recorded before the new FX30 and FX3 updates so consider accordingly
    Have a great day ✌️
