  • Hi guys, it's Ari!! Today I'm going to show you guys the differences between 50s and 60s clothes. Don't forget to subscribe! Just click the link below :)
    / @thatssoari
    I've already done 2 other videos comparing the fashion of different decades, so I thought I'd do another. This time I'm covering the fashion of the 50s as well as the 60s.
    I'm definitely no expert, so please excuse me if not everything is historically accurate :) These are just things I've noticed as a girl who loves vintage style!
    Thank you so much for watching. Seriously, you don't know how much it means to me! You guys are the best :) :) :)

    Good job Ari! Having lived through both decades, your observations are right on the mark. What no one talks about is to get that wide southern-belle profile of the 1950s, you had to wear at least 2 crinolines (very stiff and scratchy} and 1 slip under your dress. Capri pants were called pedal-pushers or clam diggers in 1950s. No one called them "capri pants." When the mini skirt came out in 1960s, you had to wear either leotards, knee socks, or go bare legged when wearing them. Nylon stockings were too short.... we were still wearing garter belts and girdles with stockings at the time ....and so they invented pantyhose. As for wearing plastic overcoats, dresses, etc. ... they looked great but they were hotter than hell!

      Despite the 50’s being looked at as frigid and ultra conservative, in the long run, it has been way more influential than the 60’s. The pinup/rockabilly look of the 50’s is much more copied and emulated today than any 60’s look. Dita Von Teese, Rhianna, Katy Perry, Madonna , Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé ect have all been inspired by 1950’s old Hollywood glamour whereas no one is walking around in miniskirts or go-go boots or trying to look like a hippy from the 60’s. Not only that, but the 50’s also produced the most iconic sex symbols OF ALL TIME, like James Dean, Marlon Brando, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Bettie Page, whose images adorn everything from clocks to lunchboxes. With the exception of maybe Edie Sedgwick, you can’t really say the same of 60’s icons like Twiggy, Goldie Hawn, Sharon Tate ect. Even as far as decor, you see 50’s themed diners (me and my husband went to one in Maui a few years ago) with the old Coca-Cola signs, pictures of Vargas girls, and jukeboxes being copied much, much more than the psychedelic, flower power/smiley face look of the 60’s. The 50’s look has definitely been more influential.

    The 50s style was DRASTICALLY influenced by Diors first release in 1947 called “The New Look”....it exemplifies everything thats feminine & beautiful about 50s style- rounded shoulders, cinched waist + very full skirt. If u ever have a chance 2 see the Dior exhibit at MMA its amazing!

    Yay! A new video from you! A great way to end the month (or I guess technically START the month since it's after midnight here, haha). Always enjoy watching these and you look amazing as always. I think the 60's style has more vibrant colors to it so if I had to pick I'd go with that but the 50's aesthetic is great, too. I think I mentioned this before but it's amazing how different so many things were in 1960 compared to 1969. I kind of think of 1960 as more 50's than 60's anyway, but 1969 was kind of a pre-70's year in a way that 1959 wasn't to the 60's (except in one key area, the folk music revival began in the late 50's).

    • @ThatsSoAri
      @ThatsSoAri  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is SO true. I think the early 60s were still somewhat closely connected to the 50s, but things changed so rapidly about mid-decade. Thank for the insightful comment!! 😀😀😀

    • @AltoonaYourPiano
      @AltoonaYourPiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, plus there's lots of regional variation. I live in a rust belt city and the postwar era through the 50's was kind of like a Great Depression part II since the railroads were in decline and a lot of people were laid off regularly and out of work, a video I saw filmed in 1960 showed a city with a very 1930's look and feel to it. And from about 1961-1966 here it was kind of our "50's" from what I heard from my parents and others around at the time and the late 60's and 70's kind of melted together here, most of the 70's was like a blend of 60's and 70's styles and culture.

    • @AltoonaYourPiano
      @AltoonaYourPiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not everywhere. Many places yes, but there were a lot of places that saw hard times in the 50's due to the decline of many types of industry. While in places like California and New York the increase in office jobs allowed for a better standard of living, more people moving to the suburbs, and a boom of commercial businesses, college towns began to flourish due to more people being able to go to university, and Michigan saw a boom in the automotive industry due to people travelling more, industries like the railroad industry, coal industry, and steel industry were on a steady decline that began after WWII, which meant more people would be laid off and not have a source of income. Dayton (Ohio), Johnstown (Pennsylvania), Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), Altoona (Pennsylvania), Gary (Indiana), are great examples of this.
      It wasn't all doom and gloom, though. The downtowns of these cities remained somewhat vibrant and active because of the people living their walking downtown for stuff to buy. Some of these cities were able to recover (such as Pittsburgh) while others like Dayton and Altoona continued their downward spiral.

    If you research the "go-go boot" style, you see that it began with one style (very classic, low heel) by French designer André Courrèges, but there were a lot of spinoffs. And those spinoffs were made with cheaper materials and had chunkier heels. The original style is more collectible today than the later versions, (and I don't think I'm alone in thinking that they there were much better-looking, too), but were more expensive to acquire back then.

    How did you find, playing at 8:20, the French song "C'est le temps de l'amour" by Francoise Hardy? That really caught my attention because my French 101 teacher's assistant taught us that song during my freshman year of college (when we were into early 70's fashion!). Great video! I was fascinated by my 1st grade teacher's wardrobe in 1960-61 of full-skirted 50's dresses. She had a lot of shirtwaist dresses but also polka-dotted numbers with the deep neckline in back. Would love to have been able to wear 1950s fashion but I came along too late for that. Very feminine era, the 50s! :)

    Please Help!
    How is that "dress" called the LEFT woman wears at 03:55 ?
    I urgently need something like that BUT with longer sleeves and longer in total, like slightly under the knees.
    Thank you community :-*

    The 60s sounds so creepy to me. It definitely was the beginning of hollywood making children things accepted. What I mean is *Cough cough* cuties. Either way the reason I am on this video is because I found a photo of my grandmother that I am painting but it's black and white and I wanted to add color.

    I prefer 50’s. 60’s got to out of control. Sex and war a lot it seems. And sometimes together wow.
