  • Planting a Super Fragrant Jubilation™ Gardenia - In this video I plant a Jubilation™ Gardenia from the Southern Living Plant Collection in my yard. This variety is a great addition to any foundation planting. It only reaches 3-4' in height and width. It gets fragrant flowers in the spring and then sporadic flowers during the summer and fall.

    Thank you for the information regarding the gardenia. My mother always had one at our house and the fragrance is magical. I just bought one and plan to put in my back yard off the deck. It will be perfect there since the stairs to the deck will block the morning sun until about 9 and the hedges to the west will block it from the sunset. Thanks for the confidence booster!

    Wonderful info on gardenias! Thank you so much for posting videos about working in hard, compacted clay soil. We bought a new construction house in Clayton/Garner and are dealing with the difficulties of new landscaping beds in hard clay. No dirt to speak of so we’re having to amend every time we plant anything.
    We just bought the ProPlugger and I’ve used it already. It’s EXCELLENT!
    Keep up on the videos! So glad to have found a local gardener with the same clay problem, lol!

      We bought new construction too in TN in red clay! I'm used to very good black dirt in farm country Illinois. This has been challenging to plant in but these videos really help.

    When we moved here three years ago we made a terraced wall on our steep sloped front yard we planted little ones like you did and now they are huge and blooming great. Perhaps they like the drainage they get on the slope. They kicked into bloom right after my knockouts finished their first flush.

    THANK YOU so much for doing this one, Jim! I really want to try this gardenia. Not sure if I will put it in a container or the ground, but I definitely want to give it a try!

    What you told us about wilting a while ago and in this video was a total game-changer for me. I was killing sooo many poor plants by drowning them in our clay soil after thinking that they were wilting due to lack of water. Also, I’ve told many folks about this problem and about cutting the tips off of new plants so they can focus on root growth after planting. 👌

    Well after your information I now know why I've killed every one of my gardenias (Jubilation), too much water and too much sun on the roots. I live in central fl.

    I had four here in South Georgia (clay soil). The first three turned yellow and one died. They were planted in the amended soil. I should have hilled them like you say. The 4th is doing great. Its planted on a hill, so water drains pretty good. I potted one of the yellowing ones and it has come back to life (thank goodness). I will need to do the same for the other. I will NOT put them in the soil that way again. Glad to know what their tempermant is. Thanks!

    I have mine on the north side & gets mid morning sun... At the start of the spring it tends to get a few yellow leaves.. I figured it was just the sun & wished I would have planted in more shade... They smell soooooo good...

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yellow leaves is very common. All evergreen shrubs shed some in the spring. It really stands out on Gardenias, because it is yellow.

    Have lost almost every gardenia planted, although jubilation was not one variety I have ever planted, I planted 6 “scent amazing” gardenias and lost 4 of the 6, and lost 5 out of 6 chuck hayes gardenias. Of the 2 scent amazing that survived, took them about 7-8 months before I saw any growth from them after winter, would have taken awhile to rejuvenate. Pulled them out and put some tough spireas in.

    I am in Raleigh and would love to use these as foundation plants for my house... I am just concerned the front of my house is *too* shaded, though it would slope down and I feel drain well. We pulled out a bunch of holly bushes.

    I bought a beautiful Gardenia that was loaded with buds. I think what my problem is, I left it sit in the pot in the sun and didn't water it. Just forgot. Well I did what you just told me on this video. I drowned it because it was wilting. (( My question is what do I do now ? )) The leaves are turning yellow and are falling off. Help please. ...I live in Ocala FL zone 9...

    With gardenias do you feed them often with acid plant food? My gardenia tree hasn't produced much flowers. Or maybe I'm just impatient and can't wait for the profusion of the scent. I'm in zone 10.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just fertilize everything once. I would use a fertilizer for acid loving plants if you need to adjust your pH. Check your pH with some sort of simple tester and your pH is above 6 then use fertilizer for acid loving plants. If it is below 6 then just use a regular slow release fertilizer. Keep them mulched and that helps make food as well

    Why do you think my gardenia leaves may be turning brown on one plant only? I’ve got four planted in the same general area, but only one of them has leaves turning brown. I’m in hardiness zone 8a. Thanks so much for the great information on your channel!

    We inherited a gardenia from the previous owners. It is very established but it reaches so bad it's almost completely leaning toward the afternoon sun. I plan to prune it once it's done flowering this summer. Would a hard prune help with this problem or do I need to move it?

    • @jennifernash4638
      @jennifernash4638 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It would just lean back again, but it might be a little fuller. You could definitely kill that Gardenia moving it.

    • @jennifernash4638
      @jennifernash4638 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JimPutnam I will try that! There's nothing planted around it, either, so I definitely need to fix that. Had no idea about shading the roots until this video. Thank you.
