As a writer (albeit of magazine and newspaper articles) , I agree with Ellison taking action and threatening to sue Cameron and Hemdale.
When you are a writer , you have to protect your work. I wouldn't want anyone trying to financially profit off of anything I wrote or use or misuse elements and aspects of my work.
Im glad Harlan got some money for his troubles.

yes but as a writer you also understand that everything created is not original, it all comes from different things we've either seen, experienced or even dreamed, I personally dont believe Cameron took anything from Ellison I believe this was just a case of two people coming up with similar ideas from different sources, and trying to sue for that seems very immoral

Cameron and Ellison didn't come up with similar ideas. Ellison wrote his TV scripts Soldier and Demon with a Glass Hand that got produced as episodes .
Years later, Cameron specifically referenced Ellison and joked that he had ripped off a couple of his episodes in an interview with Starlog magazine.
Thus humorous or not Cameron admitted that he was aware of Ellison and his work which had long preceded The Terminator. This isn't a matter of converging streams of original work by two people but one person clearly filching certain ideas from the work of another. This obviously cannot stand thus Ellison was forced to take action abd deservedly got a financial settlement
So your point is ultimately invalid.

@@writeralbertlanier3434 I would say that all work is derivative of something else and as long as it's different enough it should be allowed to be it's own original thing otherwise we'd never get anything, pretty sure Ellison also got ideas from other people and never credited them, difference is they never sued him either because they don't know him or they're long since been dead that it doesn't matter

Copyright exists partly to protect written work. Plagiarism exists when people outright steal phrases and paragraphs from others without attribution .
Therefore in the real world , people get held to account when they appropriate parts of the work of others.
Since you are not a writer, it is not surprising you don't understand but then again it doesn't matter if you understand or not. Your POV is irrelevant in the end .
Now you are entitled your opinions but not to facts and the facts say otherwise.
      Have a nice day.

@@writeralbertlanier3434 there's the issue then the Terminator does not steal phrases and paragraphs it tells it's story without taking exact words from those episodes

I feel like no average person would be able to call Ellison when they make something
2: I feel Ellison would be annoyed by soo many phone calls
3: a person does not own general story themes or plots like time travel or robots
but good on Ellison for saying he'd have given it for free, if what Ellison said was true about Cameron where someone asked that he did ripped off the outer limits I guess he should have called but honestly I can just dont see why anyone would call someone to ask if it's ok to use something because then you'd ask about every little thing that you're taking from and it's too much asking at that point in which case just do whatever it doesn't really need permission if what you're making is different enough

Cameron did nothing wrong. This happens in Hollywood all the time and The Terminator is different enough not to be called a rip-off.Soldier (1998) starring Kurt Russell is based on Ellison's story.

This video makes Harlan Ellison look so petty. As if he never ripped off old scifi before.
