    I totally forgot to mention something I was initially very peeved by. In the books, Fairfax goes to Lockwood & co, not the other way around. If you think about it, this makes a lot more sense: Fairfax KNOWS Lockwood & Co are investigating the murder he commited. He also knows they are in financial straits. Combine those things with the fact that he owns the extremely haunted, extremely notorious Combe Carey Hall, he's got a beautiful opportunity to kill off the kids trying to ruin his reputation that he knows they can't afford to refuse. In the show, they go to Fairfax because of an ad he placed in the newspaper. This doesn't make sense for a few reasons: he's owned this property for several years and it doesn't make sense that he would choose NOW to try to fix it. He also wouldn't want to risk anyone else BUT Lockwood & Co accepting the job. My main issue was that they changed something that confused his motives when they had a much better option.

      Firstly, it's great to see reviews of this show on TH-cam. It would be cool to see some first reaction videos too. Maybe next season? *fingers crossed* :) I get what you mean as what happened in the book worked very well. Thing is, Fairfax has several properties and I don't think his ad gave specifics so it was vague enough, and buying/selling property is what filthy rich industrialists do. Since he already has connections with the bigger agencies, only smaller, more "bespoke" outfits would be likely to respond so that narrows things down a lot. Having multiple meetings at Portland Row would get visually repetitive for future episodes and the change in location was shorthand for how important this guy is, and how big the job will be. Having them go to Fairfax's offices also covers up for him being the real Big Bad. The brief performance of the actor who played Hugo Blake was so good I thought he was definitely the murderer so the end reveal was a genuine surprise, which was nice. I also like the actor who played Fairfax as he plays the wizard Mr. Sideney in Sky's Discworld dramatisations so I didn't see him as a villain. When I later read the books, the confrontation in the shadowy cellar was SO good. I also liked how both the book and series gave that brief but scary glimpse at what a true psycho Fairfax really was. A brilliant story arc.

      Omigosh. Loved this video but I have the exact opposite thoughts on this! I thought it was unbelievable in the books that Fairfax would just show up at Portland Row. It's just not realistic for a man of his standing to interrupt his day with driving across town to someone's house. But then I work with people like Fairfax, so I think it's just a different perspective. I'd love to talk more in depth about this!

      I thought having Lockwood answer Fairfax's ad was a plot weakness because it seemed like a dumb move from a smart man. What if they hadn't answered his ad? They were being told by DEPRAC not to work. Even if he knew they were the types to disobey, what if they had gone after a job? It just seemed too coincidental.
      In the book, people say it's too convenient, that the team should be suspicious, but he has enough other plausible ulterior motives that it didn't have to be about Annabel. He knows they don't have other choices, he kind of has them over a barrel in terms of pricing, he's a rich douche who is forcing a team of kids to do something because they need the money.

    I think you're way too harsh in some parts. Flat acting in ep 1? No, in fact I've never been more impressed by a trio of young actors than Cameron, Ruby and Ali in this. They nailed the awkward tension of their first meetings and everything between them felt natural to me. The chemistry flowed and their love for the characters is evident-- this series struck gold with the cast, and that's the general consensus among loyal L&Co book fans.

    I think that Lucy being portrayed slightly different from the books - you 've mentioned she seemed more scared in the show - comes from the change of POV. The books are told from her POV, so obviously she might kind of described herself a bit more heroic than she really felt. The same goes for her view of Lockwood - she has some sort of rose-glassed view of him. But I think he WAS cocky in the books but it took Lucy some time she realized herself.

      I get what you mean, Lucy is definitely an unreliable narrator. But I actually think she’s consistently reliable when it comes to putting herself down, and even when she’s doing incredibly brave things, she always criticizes herself for them.
      That sort of only starts to change during the Empty Grave when she confronts Marissa. In the elevator on her way up she looks at her reflection in the mirror and finds she feels proud to be herself.

    Furthermore, I like the Harry Potter films, but many of the line deliveries (even when they're older) felt scripted. It certainly never felt as natural as it does in Lockwood & Co... And taking into account that this is Cameron's first role, he's majorly impressive. He has natural on-screen charisma. He's delightful with Ruby and Ali. He plays the part with passion. I loved the snarky moments he had with Kipps (they're real life buddies).

    I really wish they went full in on the Combe Carrey Hall stuff. It felt a lot more intense in the books with them taking that tour of how all the inhabitants died and the Screaming Staircase being a lot more crazy. Also the skulls character isn't as sarcastic or as fun as it was in the books.

    Ok ok but hear me out: I think there WAS a love triangle in the book series. I wholeheartedly believe the skull was in love with Lucy. He was so jealous of Lockwood and he just wanted it to be the two of them.
    My thoughts about how they might tie in the skull seeing the bone glass: we know that in the book series there's been a fence put up on the Other Side stopping visitors from entering some type of door. Maybe the skull saw that something was wrong with the Other Side and was disturbed.
    Nice video!

  • @Avrii
    @Avrii ปีที่แล้ว +42

    I think they added Norrie and her being ghost-locked for the sole purpose of having a way for Lucy to talk about her feelings and stuff without it being weird for the viewer. The books rely on her point of view so much. Maybe they felt like they needed her to have at least some form of narration without her having voice overs all the time.
    Also I think they changed ghost-touch as well? It never happens in the show but Lucy says in the first episode that she would've been dead if Annabell would've touched her. In the book Lockwood actually gets ghost touched by Annabell (afaik) and is fine because he was treated immediately.
    🤔
    Great comparison though! Thank you :)

    I think when it comes to the ghost lock situation, I don't think they "changed" it but rather added on to the idea. In one of the episodes, you could see that Lucy is ghost-locked by Annabel but isn't put into a coma. So it's still the same idea. However, what happened to Norrie appeared to be a longer exposure and heavier duration than what Lucy experienced (and was able to pull away from quickly). So it seems they added that if ghost lock persists too long, the affected may fall into a coma-like state.

    About the argument: I don't think it fits with the original Lockwood, but it fits with the Lockwood in the show. Because he is so overly focused on himself in the show while in the books he is like that as well, but not as extreme. In the show Lucy has seen a lot of this arrogant youth that likes to stand in the spotlight with his big mouth, wants to get on TV. It really does seem like he really wants to have the spotlight

  • @a_person._.7214

    The maindifference I was peeved by were the faifax should go to them, and Lucy's first encounter with the skull. In the series the skull just says her name, and then she passes out. In the books however, she was able to have a full conversation that first time, and it said major things like "Death's coming, death's coming to all pf you" and "Death's in life, and life's in death" And I much prefer how the books did it, because it established Lucy's power, and the skull made major predictions about the series that Lucy understands at the end of book four, whereas the tv series just makes her seem weak and dramatic when she passes out. I do like that they used her passing out to tie the gap between the books, but I still find it annoying that she just passed out because she heard her name.

    • @psychedelicpegasus7587
      @psychedelicpegasus7587 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think when you move from a written to a visual medium, changes are necessary for pacing. In the book, a substantial hook was needed to propel things to the next story; a much longer wait when reading as a new release. In the series, a cliffhanger got viewers pumped up and intrigued for the next episode. I personally liked the slow reveal and flashbacks to the skull in the next episode. It added suspense and mystery. Lucy didn't pass out from hearing her name. I viewed it as the initial reaction to the focus of a Type Three directed entirely on her. Passive listening and active listening take different levels of focus and effort, after all. Also, it was really creepy :P Going into shock after a traumatic event isn't a sign of weakness. Since the skull is incredibly strong, even in the silvered container, it makes sense. To quote show!Lucy herself, she is "really fucking powerful". ^_^

    • @a_person._.7214
      @a_person._.7214 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@psychedelicpegasus7587 You make a valid point, and I agree with you now. I am still upset that in the second conversation, when Lucy was ready and didn't faint, the skull didn't say "Death's in life, and life's in death" Because even if we don't know it, that is a pretty major statement that foreshadows the major plotline in the story. And this specific statement is addressed in the fourth book. Of course they are probably going to have the skull say it in a season two during a book four episode, if they say it at all.

    I am not your average fantasy show or book fan, I love historical non fiction and mostly documentaries, but I do love a good TV show and this show just caught my attention and kept it, it was truly a refreshingly well made story with good acting and writing. Believable acting and scenarios, it was such a well grounded living world too, although they didn't spend a ridiculous amount of time worldbuilding, it still feels very fleshed out and lived in.NOT TO MENTION THE AMAZING SOUNDTRACK AND MUSIC CHOICE, the non poser use of the cure and other alt bands just makes it feel so much more authentic instead of the usual 'muhh ima punk alt emo goth, so sad' BS hollywood trope, it felt real and grounded and apart of their identity. Omg, listing all the things that are different from the books was my first instinct after watching the show! I'm so happy someone made a video about it🥰. You voiced so many thoughts I had in mind)).
    The new concept of how the ghost lock works was something that confused me, as well. I wonder whether they want to explore it further. I mean, they have children lying in coma across the whole country...
    Another thing that felt wrong was how Lucy's mom was portrayed. She never actually appears in the books but is described as a not really caring individual (and there are reasons why she became like that). And in the series she just felt cruel for no reason.
    But I enjoyed watching the show anyway! Praying for it to be renewed. I am already worried about the scene with Lucy and the fetch (I hope, it will be convincing; unfortunately, in the book I never even started believing that it's a real Lockwood).
    Sorry for possible mistakes in my English.

    Book Spoilers! When the skull says that it's wrong, it's a trap, the simplest explanation is that he can see the silver fence around the dark portal. A little banal, I'll grant you, but it would have made that scene foreshadowing for the Other Side of London bit from the last book.

    I loved the show, which is kind obvious because I actually only found out about the BOOKS after the show and I’m sooo grateful because I never would have found one of my favorite book series without it.
    I watched the show in like a day or two and ordered the books as fast as I could, was so eager to read them that I actually read some online before they arrived and got through them all in less than two weeks. I love the books even more but I still LOVE LOVE the show. Probably my current favorite, and I think it is overall a very loyal and respectful adaptation.
    I think my main two reservations, however, would be 1.) Skull, my personal favorite character, was pretty much drained of his personality. He’s treated as explicitly serious and kind of boring and old. Whereas in the books, of course he’s an important plot device and has very wise and serious insights - but he has none of his essential comedic value and his even more important bond with Lucy hasn’t even yet been hinted at in the show, really. This was a huge surprise to me reading the books after watching the show, a show fan alone would have no idea how vital the character is beyond his ability to talk, and I sincerely hope that Netflix changes its kind to renew and they start building that bond up and showcase his personality. It’s gonna be especially important by the time they reach The Other Side.
    2.) The repercussions and implications of Skull being the one to look in the Bone Glass and Lucy reacting and collapsing,… in the books, Lucy and Skull have a psychic bond and it’s not always explicitly stated but there are many times where it seems like they intrinsically feel each others emotions or know things about each other that they haven’t been told. I could go back through and pull these out, but they stuck out to me a lot; especially because of the intense contrast from the show.
    Anyway, my theory for this would naturally have to be. Has Lucy been corrupted by the Bone Glass THROUGH Skull? Because of their connection? She has visions connected to deaths and ghost lock and future “deaths” notably Lockwood’s frozen face, shortly before she passes out…
    This reminded me somewhat of the tunnels beneath Aickmere’s with the malevolent Fetch that tried to trick Lucy. That’s the closest thing I could think of to the source material. Which brings up more questions.
    But anyway, is Skull looking in the Bone Glass going to drive Lucy insane ? Is she going to know more about the Other Side than she should? Know what’s wrong with it? She appears haunted after it.
    Or is this going to have some of the repercussions of the Aickmere event (I hope not, at least not all the way, maybe it could be a slow fear that starts to develop, but I hope they don’t pull all that up yet because that would be WAY out of place and too early.)
    Besides that, I think the show was lovely. I can’t picture anyone else as the characters and even with some of the differences - I DO hope they show Lucy become more confident and a little less scared - they don’t bother me too much in the context of the show, and even George being physically different from Cubbins didn’t bother me because he NAILS his personality and they actually made it slightly more obvious how likable he is and the bond he has with Lucy as a brother and Lockwood, which I love.
    They made the subtext visual to the eye. It makes the found family aspect more obvious to the non-reader, and in general, I love that the show not being explicitly Lucy’s unreliable narration you get to see the things she’s quite oblivious to in the books, like Lockwood’s affection for her (which is quite obvious through bits of dialogue, body language and certain acts he does, but you’re forced to rely on what Lucy brings up and she doesn’t understand the relevance, she usually misplaces his intentions.)
    ***EDIT: I’m going to add more to this comment about the things that I LOVED about the show that they tweaked or emphasized, because I wrote a freaking essay and my phone deleted all of it!! Ahhhh!!

    As someone who hadn’t yet read the books (I’ve started now) I felt the show just dropped you in with no explanation and I spent the entire first episode confused as to what the world they occupied was. I caught on the second episode the opening credits gave you the barest hints but it wasn’t enough. I then had to go down a google rabbit hole to find the book plot to figure out that, “oh they live in a world where ghosts (visitors) only started appearing a few decades ago and only kids see them and they’re deadly so they have to send kids in at night to rid the world of them.” Okay I get it now. Like this wasn’t explained so I spent the entire first episode intrigued but also really taken out of the show because I didn’t know what was going on, like why I was being shown these story elements. I understand the book drops you in too but in a way that really hooks you so you and brings you into the world without minding you don’t quite know why this job exists in this world yet.
    It also took a bit of googling around to find the info, it wasn’t on the shows synopsis anywhere which linked to the series, I had to figure out what book was first kn the series to find the little world building synopsis that made it click. I know a lot of exposition can be bad but I could have used a few crumbs so I could have enjoyed the show right from the start.

    The acting of the 3 main characters are superb throughout the whole series. I don't know what the hell you are talking about seriously. Also the rest of the actors on the show. They change some in the series compared to the books. The books shouldn't stop at the 5th though. Feels like the author was rushed and run out of ideas for the book. There's still issues that was not resolved. The problem for one. Knowing George was obsessed with it but in the books, they're still speculating. The ghost locked victims, there's no resolution. Especially Lucy's best friend is one of them. And of course, for the fans, there should be more. But since the books are children/teen books, maybe the author was trying to be wholesome. Then again, there should be a book 6 and/or 7. Maybe they'll finish the whole story on the series. I hope so

      It actually WAS referred to as ghost-locked in the show because those children weren't actually physically touched by ghosts. Ghost-touch in the books is generally regarded as more lethal than ghost-lock because touch means that you need to be immediately treated with adrenaline. In the books, Lockwood actually gets ghost-touched and he has to recover for a couple weeks after the Annabelle Ward incident. However, you are correct about the George and Lucy incident! The tv show also referred to that as ghost-lock although they didn't suffer lasting effects.

    These were books I loved and I was shocked and surprised when I found out there was a show because I didn't know it was coming. Shadow and Bone I didn't know was books. I watched just because it was advertised as fantasy and looked cool. I was enjoying it until half way when they started up with YA love triangle shenanigans and I turned to my wife and said, "That was a left turn. Wait, do you think this is based on some YA books?" My point (and I'm biased, because I liked Stroud from his Bartimaeus series first, and I thoroughly loved the Lockwood and Co books) was just that I thought Lockwood and Co. did a better job of balancing tone and pacing, even when it changed things or neglected things I wish had made the cut as a book fan. I'm not very Internet-y, and I'm old, so maybe I just missed it, but I felt like there was a lot more marketing for Shadow and Bone than Lockwood and Co, so I hope the latter can be successful and get enough renewal to finish out the story. Because one of the things I loved the most was stuff that seemed like unresolved plot points in a given book that turned out to be breadcrumbs for later books.

      They do! Kipps especially, but they help to further the plot in multiple of the books.

      Kipps is a constant through the series, but Bobby Vernin, Kat Godwin, and Ned Shore aren't seen after book three.

    The Joplin character i got child predator vibes... It was really uncomfortable, like child predator psycho killer.

    I have a question and I can't find the answer anywhere, do you think it's worth reading the first two books or do you reckon I could skip straight to the third book?

    • @cuppabookreviews
      @cuppabookreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is absolutely worth it to read the first two. The tv show sticks pretty close to the events that occur in the first two, but the vibe and some establishing bits they removed. I think reading the first two will help set the stage better to bridge over to the third. Plus, it may help you understand some of the things that you saw in the show as well.

    I agree with a lot of what you're saying in the video, but want to point out that the art piece you use to demonstrate George from the books was not made by Ravietta but Raka instead. It's an easy mistake to make because Ravietta uses Raka's designs for Lockwood and co fanart, but you're crediting the wrong person here.

    I got a question even though the series got cancelled. Is the first book very demonic like it is in that haunted house with all the disgusting monks or are they just ocult ? The reason i am asking is because i am a Christian and i really dislike anything that is demonic even if it's tv shows. So if it is the same in the series as in the books then i would like to skip that part entirely. I bought the first 3 books and would like to know what happens next 😊
    Edit: i think i am just gonna skip the first book
