As soon as I heard the words 'Don King' and retire a '20' I knew Mello's life would be down hill from then. Another incredible and tragic story of how youth and boxing can go so terribly wrong. Thanks for sharing Rich!

In all fairness, his corner indicated in the video that he came up too fast and fought too many good fighters too soon, long before Don King got involved. Boxing is full of good boxers whose stories have yet to be told. Its only normal that most lose enough to eventually exit the sport, and in this regard, Eddie was really no different that other good boxers - that never wore - the champion's belt

Never thought I'd see you doing a video of this man. I'm from Toronto and I'm Portuguese as well. I was a lot younger than Eddie Melo so I never knew much about him until I got older. And one day I encountered him at a nightclub here. I must have been 19 or 20. This was over 25 years ago now. I was into weight lifting and kick boxing at the time. There were these 2 older Italian sisters from the gym who were into me and my workout buddy. So one night me and my friends went out to a club and saw them there. I was dancing with one of them and having a good time. So she invites me into a booth with her friends. Little did I know that her friends were part of the mob. And guess who showed up and wasn't happy to see me there lol. I was thinking, should I speak to him in Portuguese and try to win him over. Or was I about to get into a bad situation. I was nervous to say the least. Even though I had training in kickboxing. Luckily the lady I was with stepped in and calmed him down. I was relieved to say the least. And that's not the only connection I had with Eddie Melo. I dated one of his cousins awhile back as well. Boy did she have some stories to tell. He was a legend in this town. Especially in the Portuguese community here. I'd hear stories about him from people who grew up in his time. He wasn't very nice. But how many fighters are. Tragic ending to his life. But thats the chances u take when you choose that lifestyle

I remember the major beefs between the Portuguese and Italians in Toronto during the 1990s which appeared to be related to World Cup Soccer. The Portuguese had negative press coverage because the Italians had the upper hand in Toronto institutions. Press coverage at the time of the Eddie Melo shooting seemed to suggest it was a conflict with a rival Portuguese and the connection with Italian organized crime politics has always remained obscure. The truth is out there....

Fantastic! Great job. Eddie Melo started out really well and ended badly. That's basically it. I am a Canadian, and was a kid when all of these guys were fighting. It was good to hear all of those names again. A guy you mentioned who had a victory over Eddie is Ralph Hollett. Ralph started as a kickboxer and has a win over Jean Yves Theriault. He was Canadian Middleweight champion for a long time and fought guys like Bennie Briscoe. Russ Anber was his trainer.
Fernand Marcotte.... haven't heard that name in a while either. Another boxer from Canada with some notoriety was Gaetan Hart. He severely injured a guy in the ring, then in his next fight, or second fight after that, he KO'd a boxer named Cleveland Denny who died after the fight. Sad story.
We had a thriving boxing scene in Canada in the'70's - '80's and early '90's but it went a little dormant until Yves Michel and others in Montreal essentially resurrected Quebec boxing and featured guys like Jean Pascal and Lucien Bute. Great memories, I hope those guys are all doing OK in their retirement years.

Portugeezers I've worked with and strong boys and hard workers who don't take any shit can go from calm to extremely confrontational in a second if they get riled.
I met Marco Silva in person and he commanded respect just from being in his company there was a mentality a hunger in those black eyes behind a smile.

Hi Rich, I am Eddies daughter
I’m wondering if you could please send me a way I could get in contact with you. Also to those that have negative and nasty comments about Eddie or his alleged connections please keep them to yourself… did your mothers not ever teach you that “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all?!”
Eddie was a human being and most importantly my dad and my biggest loss. He was my entire world and he’s gone at the hands of a coward. So please be respectful

I always bristle when vutrent day YT commenters say vutre t day fights are fixed. BS. But a lot of them were fixed back in the day when the mob was sp entwined with boxing. Given that Melo had mafia ties, were any of his fight outcomes suspect?
