  • Final from Symphonie No. 4 in G minor by Louis Vierne performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Thursday 4th January 2024.
Vierne composed his fourth Symphony over the summer of 1914, on the outbreak of the First World War, in which he tragically lost both his brother and his first son. The fourth is arguably his most consistently dark symphony. The finale is characterised by an agitated flurry of stormy emotions, with very little let-up for both player and listener. An intensely chromatic and complex musical journey.
Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School. For more information, please visit www.benbloor.com

Vierne really knew how to write for the organ and you can play it Ben. Well done maestro.

Fabulous, Ben - virtuoso playing all the way. And Vierne on the Walker/Downes Organ is a sumptuous match . . . capturing in an awesome way the darkness (and thunder) of this agitated movement. B R A V O ! (It's undeniably 'French', but the chromaticism does put me in mind of the German, Max Reger, even though French and German harmonies are usually quite distinctive! WW1?)

I remember learning this movement after reading a book by Harvey Grace in which he referred to it as one that ought to be more widely known as a finale recital piece and as an alternative to “the maddening Widor Toccata” 😂. Very well played - so many notes.
