I'm a small scale no-till farmer near Portland Oregon. Just had our NRCS rep out this summer. We are going to be starting our projects in 2025! Thanks for the good content!
@mpitaji to be honest it's a lot of hard work. There are lots of "free" resources out there but it's time and work. I tried doing it alone but was burning out. Now I have 2 business partners and I couldn't do it without them.
As an aspiring farmer, I have watched hundreds of videos from different channels on these topics. Your channel has been one of the most informative and helpful! I truly appreciate you putting all your wisdom out there for us to understand how we also can succeed!
I'm from VA, Chesterfield County as a child, and Pittsylvania county as an adult. In 2018, I moved to Tennessee, and I don't regret it for a minute. There are no state taxes and no stupid laws. Stay out of the major cities by at least an hour, and land is pretty reasonable.
@ absolutely! I moved here from Vermont. Buying a home in Vermont would have never been feasible for me on a Chefs salary. Land and homes are over priced and taxes are some of the highest in the country. Thanks for tagging along 🙏
Great video. We just purchased 76 acres of conserved farmland under the Farmland Preservation Program in Connecticut. Connecticut Farmland Trust has told us to apply for these grants. Your video was very helpful in explaining the process.
Thank you 🙏 that’s awesome! Love the idea of farm land trust programs! I would love to find access to an actual farm of my own someday! I’m glad you found the content helpful! Wishing you the best with your new farmland 👊
It’s good to hear of more people into farming. Join the WWOOF program to teach others. I’m getting too old to start a farm now. So many beautiful farms are going to waste because of farmers aging. Keep up the good work!!!
@ I had time to think about your video. I believe you owe your viewers another video dealing with real life. It’s great what you have done. The truth is that everybody cannot rely on grants. The black farmers were just awarded a grant because they were denied grants during the depression. I went to a school on a grant ( did not finish). The grant told me what major I had to pick and did not pay for housing, food, clothes or books and school essentials. I did not take out any loans and decided to work . I don’t regret any choices. The reality is that grants or loan is not a entitlement. With all the hard work you have put in. We both know that nobody gets it right the first time!!!

We have a quarter acre behind the quarter acre we live on that I’ve had some dreams of farming. The 3 properties south of us each have a quarter acre as well. Unfortunately, we also have deer that get into those open areas and eat everything. We’re in an urban area but lots of wildlife ventures out from a major river corridor open space. Do you have problems with critters getting in and munching your crops before you can harvest them?
With the slope? So one end of a row is higher than the other end? You obviously have a great and productive garden, though everything I’ve seen about crops recommends having rows at one consistent elevation to encourage slowing the flow of water to prevent erosion and encourag infiltration. TBS, all your use of mulch and wood chips essentially does the same thing. In fact the California Department of Transportation has extensive research regarding broad use of mulch and compost as an effective erosion control.
@@chefsharvestfarm Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education for example one year I participated in feeding sheep/cattle/goats mixtures of garlic and onion juice from unsellable garlic and onion. To track how well it clears gut loads. Pretty well btw this was a long time ago. Using cover crops as mulch for example was part of the research they did 20 years ago. You come up with programs or join projects giving them research on how to improve AG sustainable. Sometimes you work with colleges and what not. They pay you to test out in a scientific method your hare brained schemes to see if they actually work. Because they might end up improving farming for everyone.
@@angelofamillionyears4599 have you ever watched “chef’s table” on Netflix? There’s an episode with Dan Barber where they prove that you are what you eat, eats… and they feed the chickens red chili paste. And their eggs come out red! Pretty cool! Thanks for dropping a comment 👊

@@chefsharvestfarm I'm done with playing "Mommy may I" with the govt. Grants come with strings.
@ that’s cool, that’s just not been my experience. They just paid for it. And no real strings attached. They don’t care what I do 🤷🏻♂️
@@leslieapplegate65 yes, thats what you cuckservatives did. put rules and regulations on any help for the working class or poor. now you complain about it. love hearing you morons cry about the problem you created.
Shared with my parents whom I hope to buy and make a homestead with in just a few years.
Subscribed now.
Grest video, thanks!
I used to be afraid of paper work. Then I got Adderall (I'm ADHD). And started a business (which I had to dissolve before making any money :( , but oh well). That invovled a lot of paperwork! Now I'm intimidated, but not scared!
@@CuriouslyCute awesome! Thanks for following along 🙏
Impressive organic farm ! Hard work pays off, especially if you know to access government loans for the small farmers. Looks like you have some “ herb “ growing as well ? Nice job 👍🏼
@@moscaman559 thank you 🙏
We have a quarter acre behind the quarter acre we live on that I’ve had some dreams of farming.
Ironically, we also have about an 8% slope across the property; 12’:150’x75’.
Yes I use electric fencing and it keeps everything out
I like the slight slope. I’ve built my garden going with the slope so water flows away from the garden.
Way to go what an inspiration.
Thanks man 👊

👍👍Another great video Chef Mikey. I'm just a home gardener with the passion and give away extra produce. I've thought about market farming but would need extra space and lots of work so it may not be practical for an ole retired fart. 🤣
Keep the videos coming as they are great! 😊
Thanks Mike 🙏 I appreciate you following along and always dropping comments! It goes a long way 👊
@@chefsharvestfarm You bet. Btw, I'm not quite "no-till"" but understand and appreciate the soil food web and the destruction deep tilling can do. So I do low or shallow tilling 1-2". I have a Troybilt tiller that I use like a tilther (using what I have rather than spending another $675!). 😊

does it matter that the grant applicant is or is not engaged in a commercial enterprise?
I don’t think so! But you will need to pay taxes on the money if you don’t have a business to expense it through. But these are all good questions to ask them. Don’t take my word for it.
Great job. What kind of rope are you using to criss cross (to hold down) the poly?
Thank you 🙏 it’s just a polyester rope I believe. It comes with the kit.
So you can get grants even though you're an LLC rather than a non-profit? That's good to know. This is a great informative video.
Yes, you don’t have to have a business.
