    Brilliantly explained and I like the choice of the tools for this horse fly trap. Especially the idea with the jar and the funnel. Well done!😃👍

    Tulle is usually polyester, which does not last long in sunlight. I am going to try aluminum screening which has larger holes than fiberglass screen and lets more sun shine on the ball. Blue is a color that deer flies love. My recycle box is swarmed by hundreds of them as I carry it to the curb, so now I wear a dollar store hat with a blue paper drink cup taped to the top. The cup is coated with Tanglefoot, a very sticky product meant to control bugs from climbing up tree trunks. In less than 5 minutes of going outside, dozens of deer flies are stuck to the cup.

    This is pretty awesome. Between my chickens, barn swallows and bats, I have a minimum of flies, but less is always better. Going to give this a try! I'm sure my horses will appreciate it!

    Thank you for sharing. I bought my hula hoop at the Dollar Tree for $1 but have not tried it out yet. It seems fairly sturdy. The purple ball (darkest color I could find) was bought at Walmart for $4. Mason jars are easy to find at thrift stores or on Craigslist. I am thinking sheer curtain panels might work and those can be found at thrift stores, too. I am hoping to do this project for under $15.
    Horseflies are attracted to dark colored animals such as deer and horses so the ball should be black in color.

      Good Job~ I tried several hoops. Water Filled Hoops are NOT Good. The water settles to tilt the trap. That kind of hoop makes trap hang lopsided. And gives the Flies a chance to escape the fabric funner before going into the Jar Catch. Thanks! BirdDog

      Hi Friend, I Do Recommend the wide mouth. The key is to create a 'join' with your home made Funnel and the Screw Top. Thanks! Have a Good Summer~ BirdDog1227

      as I understand...they hunt with sight and thermal sensory (movement and heat). their sight sense overwhelmingly dominates their smelling sense. This wont trap Biting Flies or Black Flies which are keen to smell. Sight versus Smell in this case. Dern Bloodsuckers!!!! Thanks~ BD

    Question: How to make the funnel? There must be a size match, or the funnel will be awry.

    • @Birddog1227Blogspot
      @Birddog1227Blogspot  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, I Cut away the Top Quarter of the 2-Liter Plastic Bottle. Next I inserted the "funnel" through the Mason Jar's Screw Top Ring. With the aid of a blue permanent marker, I GENEROUSLY traced the proper 'Join Line' and Made my Final Cuts/Trims needed to complete the Jar/Funnel Part. It's always easy to cut more off, Right? Good Luck~BirdDog1227

    • @Birddog1227Blogspot
      @Birddog1227Blogspot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Friend, they can starve in the Trap... The Movement of the Ball in concert with the Heat is an attractant or lure for the Pest. Thanks to Maximize your Funnel Area~~ I say you should also watch vid on the 'Finnish HorseFly Trap' Version. Try it out, BirdDog1227

    I used to have a huge amount of horse flies, and you have very few flies in your trap. You must be doing something else to repel your flies.... Otherwise I don't know why you went thru the trouble and expense to make that DIY trap for one horse fly and 5 small flies. I can buy 8 "RESCUE" traps for $40. They kill by the thousands. I know from experience. But they do smell bad.
