Can anyone fill the Huawei void? | Inside Story

  • It's seen as a major blow for Chinese technology and a win for U.S. President Donald Trump.
The UK says it's banning China's Huawei 5G from its networks.
The British government says the decision was not easy, but right for national security and the economy.
The move comes as the U.S. intensifies its campaign against the tech giant.
And it reverses the UK's attempt in January to allow restricted use of Huawei's equipment.
From the end of this year, UK operators will not be allowed to buy the firm's 5G kits.
Gear already in place will have to be removed by 2027.
The UK has reportedly asked Japan to help build its internet infrastructure instead.
What does it mean for the timeline of 5G services?
    Presenter: Sami Zeidan
    Guests
Simon Lacey, former Vice President of Global Government Affairs at Huawei Technologies in Shenzhen, China.
Robert Pritchard, cybersecurity consultant and former Deputy Head of Cyber Security Operations Centre in the British Government.
Marc Einstein, Chief Analyst for Digital Services at ITR Japan.

Huawei already has a working 5G system end to end! Sure you can go a different route by piecing components together from companies all over! But it will cost more... a lot more! And how well will these components work together?! And since Huawei has most of the patents, they get paid either way!

Looking back at the steady fall of the once mighty Great Britain, one can understand her plight of this diminishing "empire" who still think that history could be leveraged to change its course. With technological changes being absorbed by the developing nations so quickly, the time lag is no longer applicable; in fact at the current rate of development in all sectors, the developing nations are steadily over taking the West in all aspects of comparable technologies. When the nation's GDP is slowly dropping in the international parade, you can't hope to influence the rest of the world just by propaganda!

Japan once held the title of super power in electronics in the 80s. Japan was so rich then. Everyone owned a Sony walkman, Sanyo, Toshiba... electrical appliances. Who killed Toshiba?? Maybe a documentary on what happened to Toshiba will be good. Japan is still a very cash based with an aging society and facing a low birth rate problem. Japan does not easily grant a Japanese citizenship to others to protect her own identity. It will be an uphill task to catch up in the near future. I am glad Japan is doing very well in preserving her culture despite Western influences. Other countries should learn from Japan on how to preserve own culture for future generations.

Even new alternattive choice is a bit less technique, new ideas may emerge out . Solving such problems with integrated approach by combining tech of different nations other than China, a superior and more versatile tech may emerge out. What is the hurry.
