Dorje Its hard to justify when one company has a monopoly on the "entertainment and media" industry tho. There are only like 6 companies that control all the media in the US and Disney is probably the largest but they arent an actual monopoly. You would have to argue that Disney alone is stifling the creativity and availability of all other entertainment media, which is literally impossible with the internet.
I think the biggest problem with all the controversies and disappointing games these past few years is not the microtransactions, the unfinished games and the downright cash cows that's forced in our faces, but the idiocy of the gaming community, to give chance, after chance, after chance. I keep hearing "Maybe the next game they'll get it right", "This is the 5th game in the franchise that's broken but I'm gonna buy the next game just incase it's good". NO, we as gamers/buyers/consumers have a right to demand better content. We shouldn't have to suffer after we pay 60 or 80 or 120 for games WE ALREADY BOUGHT. It's all good to say "Oh they brought out new patches and everything is great now", BUT THE PROBLEM IS GAMES SHOULD BE FINISHED BEFORE RELEASE NOT AFTER. Otherwise if we keep giving these greedy companies chances they don't deserve, gaming will become a cash cow in it's self and once it's too late everyone will decide that is the time to take a stand. Boycott unfinished games, hit them where it hurts otherwise you only have yourselves to blame for letting this happen for so long.

You guys are 100% right. I would like to imagine that all gaming companies want to make the most amount of money possible, of course. So in retrospect, we'd like to think that they'd make a game as best they could, to blow us away, so we would highly invest, maybe even recommend to friends because it's so good! As a reward for spending our hard earned cash on their game. However, now in reality games are rushed and unfinished, companies policy is always "graphics over gameplay" and we get abominations such as SW Battlefront 1 & 2, Destiny 1 & 2, too many chances and the gaming community continue to fall into these traps time after time. After buying UFC, FIFA, Battlefront and many others I have not bought a single EA game since. We should all start doing the same with these companies

I remember when someone would mention Battlefront 2 and my mind would go back to my childhood and all the great times I had with the original game. Now I hear it and all I feel is the disappointment that I will never get to see the next TRUE Battlefront game. EA's Battlefront is not Battlefront, not in my mind.

Well there were MANY problems with that game. - It was given to support studio, with NO HELP from ANYONE who worked on the previous games. - They also had no experience with the engine they were forced to use. - It wasn't supposed to be open world game - EA told them to make it Open World with 13 months left to release....Which meant of course - re-working the dreadful engine. - Since the studio was small, they had contractors from AROUND THE WORLD. That meant - incredible difficulty in just getting anything done, decided or cooperated (different time zones, files transfer etc.) - The guys working in the studio themselves said they felt like a set up to fail and that they had to watch their back constantly... Combine all those factors - the game was actually INSANELY good for people working in those conditions....

I'm 46 1/2 years old, and have been playing video games since I was 7. I have no sympathy at all for the current plight of the video game community because you all just keep buying it. When will you all finally learn to just stop buying ANY game from these companies, no matter what it is, and just let them go bankrupt? Andromeda hurt the most. There was so much hype, I believe it was Joe's number 1 most anticipated game of 2017. Plus EA and Bioware literally gave up on the game and its loyal fanbase. Patched it a few times, but no DLC to resolve the many plot threads in this game. The most insulting part is they continued updating ONLY the multiplayer. Like fans of this series play mass effect solely for its multiplayer. Absolutely insulting and embarrassing.

Interestingly, EA is the most prominent publisher in this list. Yet EA stocks are about 60% higher than last year. Proves that EA dropped making even good games. Their whole business now is in acquiring some interesting license, ruining it (eg. don't waste any money or talent) and grab the money. And since investors are old guys that don't give a fuck, their stock is rising, earning more money for EA :) No need to create anything above mediocre. Stock value is now their core business.

The 2017 was probably the worst year in gaming in terms of AAA developers and publisher being very nasty with milking every cent and penny from die hard fans of their games. Such misbehaviour, lack if real enthusiasm for gaming is a real concern that we must face and challenge it with our passion for games. Do we really have to act like sheep, buying these not finished demos or do we have another option? I think we have to be very careful and concious when we buy a game. It's us who makes the decision at the and of the day. So we have to be strong. Once upon a time one very wise man said, that the most powerful man is the man, who can control himself. I suggest we control our emotions, tastes and wallets, so that we become stronger and more resistent to the lies we face every day.
Vodny 2014 was worse then this, the first half of the year excluding ME:A 2017 was looking to be one of the greats. BotW, HZD, P5 ect. All were great. Once the after summer games hit it was just loot boxes one after another that stomped put the rest.
Remember when games companies used to release £40 complete games with loads of content. Then maybe 1 year later release £20 DLC that was half as big as the main game or £10 map packs that came with a bunch of maps. And that was it. No lootboxes or other £50 DLC that adds a small amount of content that the base game really needed. Remember when EA didn't own every single god damn IP to either run into the ground or milk the money from it. God damn I miss those days

Yeah, it's an exceptional game too. LB's only mistake to this day was signing on with Nexon. They're the single worst publisher you can imagine. No marketing whatsoever, no promotions, ANYTHING. It's killing the game on Steam, even if the PS4 version is doing alright, and no other publisher would drop the ball this badly.

Tbh 2017 was the year for indie devs and hopefully these indie studios go on to become the latest and greatest in gaming. Because alot of indie devs are small teams of REAL gamers who understand what gamers want from a game.

The game started dev as a MOBA game a la Paragon. Switched dev to a 3rd person Hero shooter a la Overwatch/Battleborn, realized it wasn't good enough, switched again to a Saints Row style game, but without the polish. So it ended up how it did.

Unkown Figure I thought the 4th game was pretty mediocre as well. Like really the series just kept on trying to be more crazy. Which is why I never once felt like they were a rival to GTA. Like I love GTA for the fact that it can have 3 characters with such more personality yet also feel like real people. They also blend comedy in with action so well. While SR jokes all felt way to childish for me. Plus some things they just straight ripped off like the purple dildo yet figured hey lets just make is massive because you know thats really funny. Like GTA knows how to do over the top crazy better as well in the form of their online DLC. Like some of those modes are just insane and so much fun.
Saints Row 2 was such an incredible game (although it has aged terribly). The story, soundtrack, and activities were so awesome in that game. Whenever people ask me about my favourite games of all time, SR 2 is on the list. I put so much time into clearing the map of all activities and upgrading all of my cribs. I really hope they dial it back a bit with the next SR game and they go back to being a game about building up a gang.

Ellisar Atranimus I 100% agree with you but the most prevalent and concerning issue doesn’t include you and I but future generations of gamers. You and I won’t pay into this system because we’re very aware of what we had before DLC and micro transactions, but younger gamers don’t have this knowledge. They’ve grown up with and have become accustomed to this business model making it easier to streamline it into AAA titles. We just need to remember to pass this knowledge on and not let this become the norm.

Dancing Deity Rogue One (Rouge is makeup) is the worst SW movie to date. The best part of the movie was the ending, which mostly consisted of characters the movie never built up. If you've seen the horrible Godzilla movie, he really does the exact same thing, just bigger, by killing the 2 best actors' characters and doing an even better third act. The biggest improvement on the directors formula was K-2SO, and considering how serious the movie is, it's not great that the comic relief has the best scenes until the third act, where generally supporting cast and some cameos outshine the protagonists. Whatever you may thing of TFA and TLJ, they have better characters.

Yeap. You’re absolutely right on all points concerning how Bungie dropped the ball on Destiny 2. A Kotaku article recently mentioned how developers found it “too hard” to continuously create content for players and yet the Grimoire was updated with more curious lore that would’ve wonderfully culminated with missions built around an element of what the Grimoire presented and instead of picking up where the Grimoire already left off, the lead developer decided it would be better slapping a new number and rebooting the franchise in order to draw new players and yet they’ve been doing that already with the annual expansions by releasing the base game with the major expansion. This is an utter waste of money for Activision and it surprises me to not have heard Activision pressure Bungie to fire the game director due to this decision.
Austin Adventurer if a company invests $500 million to develop a game, they expect AT LEAST double of what they put in. The whole point of an investment is not to just gain the money all back. The franchise is currently no where near that $1 billion mark and with controversies about microtransactions and lackluster content, making that revenue is in serious jeopardy.
The thing with bf2 in my opinion is that it really wasnt destined to be the worst thing ever from whole game industry. When people played the beta majority thought it was great. The progression system lootbox hell was added afterwards before the game released and i call that a big fucking scam made by money whores who need to get raped by damn rhinos. But cod is different. Its just pure shit year after year with nothing new no matter does it have microtransactions. i bought the game about three months after release ad i must say campaign wise i like it as much as the others and for things like creating your own guns and armour however mp is a huge let down as no-one plays it and none of my old me3 friends who made it so enjoyable haven't bothered picking it up

I think the biggest problem with all the controversies and disappointing games these past few years is not the microtransactions, the unfinished games and the downright cash cows that's forced in our faces, but the idiocy of the gaming community, to give chance, after chance, after chance. I keep hearing "Maybe the next game they'll get it right", "This is the 5th game in the franchise that's broken but I'm gonna buy the next game just incase it's good". NO, we as gamers/buyers/consumers have a right to demand better content. We shouldn't have to suffer after we pay 60 or 80 or 120 for games WE ALREADY BOUGHT. It's all good to say "Oh they brought out new patches and everything is great now", BUT THE PROBLEM IS GAMES SHOULD BE FINISHED BEFORE RELEASE NOT AFTER. Otherwise if we keep giving these greedy companies chances they don't deserve, gaming will become a cash cow in it's self and once it's too late everyone will decide that is the time to take a stand.
Boycott unfinished games, hit them where it hurts otherwise you only have yourselves to blame for letting this happen for so long.

So in retrospect, we'd like to think that they'd make a game as best they could, to blow us away, so we would highly invest, maybe even recommend to friends because it's so good! However, now in reality games are rushed and unfinished, companies policy is always "graphics over gameplay" and we get abominations such as SW Battlefront 1 & 2, Destiny 1 & 2, too many chances and the gaming community continue to fall into these traps time after time.

Well there were MANY problems with that game.
- It was given to support studio, with NO HELP from ANYONE who worked on the previous games.
- They also had no experience with the engine they were forced to use.
- It wasn't supposed to be open world game - EA told them to make it Open World with 13 months left to release....Which meant of course - re-working the dreadful engine.
- Since the studio was small, they had contractors from AROUND THE WORLD. That meant - incredible difficulty in just getting anything done, decided or cooperated (different time zones, files transfer etc.)
- The guys working in the studio themselves said they felt like a set up to fail and that they had to watch their back constantly...
Combine all those factors - the game was actually INSANELY good for people working in those conditions....
This is what happens when you give a game to one branch of a Developer that HAS NEVER MADE A FULL GAME BEFORE!

I'm 46 1/2 years old, and have been playing video games since I was 7. I have no sympathy at all for the current plight of the video game community because you all just keep buying it. When will you all finally learn to just stop buying ANY game from these companies, no matter what it is, and just let them go bankrupt? Andromeda hurt the most. There was so much hype, I believe it was Joe's number 1 most anticipated game of 2017. Plus EA and Bioware literally gave up on the game and its loyal fanbase. Patched it a few times, but no DLC to resolve the many plot threads in this game. The most insulting part is they continued updating ONLY the multiplayer. Like fans of this series play mass effect solely for its multiplayer. Absolutely insulting and embarrassing.
Problem is that the game was doomed from the start, handed off to an untested studio with bad tech while the main studio started on Anthem.

The 2017 was probably the worst year in gaming in terms of AAA developers and publisher being very nasty with milking every cent and penny from die hard fans of their games. Such misbehaviour, lack if real enthusiasm for gaming is a real concern that we must face and challenge it with our passion for games. Do we really have to act like sheep, buying these not finished demos or do we have another option? I think we have to be very careful and concious when we buy a game. It's us who makes the decision at the and of the day. So we have to be strong. Once upon a time one very wise man said, that the most powerful man is the man, who can control himself. I suggest we control our emotions, tastes and wallets, so that we become stronger and more resistent to the lies we face every day.
Vodny 2014 was worse then this, the first half of the year excluding ME:A 2017 was looking to be one of the greats. BotW, HZD, P5 ect. All were great. Once the after summer games hit it was just loot boxes one after another that stomped put the rest.

Then maybe 1 year later release £20 DLC that was half as big as the main game or £10 map packs that came with a bunch of maps. And that was it. No lootboxes or other £50 DLC that adds a small amount of content that the base game really needed. Yeah, it's an exceptional game too. LB's only mistake to this day was signing on with Nexon. They're the single worst publisher you can imagine. No marketing whatsoever, no promotions, ANYTHING. It's killing the game on Steam, even if the PS4 version is doing alright, and no other publisher would drop the ball this badly.

The game started dev as a MOBA game a la Paragon. Switched dev to a 3rd person Hero shooter a la Overwatch/Battleborn, realized it wasn't good enough, switched again to a Saints Row style game, but without the polish. So it ended up how it did.

Unkown Figure I thought the 4th game was pretty mediocre as well. Like really the series just kept on trying to be more crazy. Which is why I never once felt like they were a rival to GTA. Like I love GTA for the fact that it can have 3 characters with such more personality yet also feel like real people. They also blend comedy in with action so well. While SR jokes all felt way to childish for me. Plus some things they just straight ripped off like the purple dildo yet figured hey lets just make is massive because you know thats really funny. Like GTA knows how to do over the top crazy better as well in the form of their online DLC. Like some of those modes are just insane and so much fun.
Saints Row 2 was such an incredible game (although it has aged terribly). The story, soundtrack, and activities were so awesome in that game. Whenever people ask me about my favourite games of all time, SR 2 is on the list. I put so much time into clearing the map of all activities and upgrading all of my cribs. I really hope they dial it back a bit with the next SR game and they go back to being a game about building up a gang.

I 100% agree with you but the most prevalent and concerning issue doesn’t include you and I but future generations of gamers. You and I won’t pay into this system because we’re very aware of what we had before DLC and micro transactions, but younger gamers don’t have this knowledge. They’ve grown up with and have become accustomed to this business model making it easier to streamline it into AAA titles. We just need to remember to pass this knowledge on and not let this become the norm.

Dancing Deity Rogue One (Rouge is makeup) is the worst SW movie to date. The best part of the movie was the ending, which mostly consisted of characters the movie never built up. If you've seen the horrible Godzilla movie, he really does the exact same thing, just bigger, by killing the 2 best actors' characters and doing an even better third act. The biggest improvement on the directors formula was K-2SO, and considering how serious the movie is, it's not great that the comic relief has the best scenes until the third act, where generally supporting cast and some cameos outshine the protagonists. Whatever you may thing of TFA and TLJ, they have better characters.
EA should lose the license ALL TOGETHER and never get it back for what THEY believe when project "Ragtag" or that Uncharted Star wars adventure game is not what we want for a Single Player experience

+SolarstrikeVG No one should have the EXCLUSIVE license. They should just give out the license on a case-by-case basis to multiple developers, not dedicate or trust it to just ONE studio.

Yeap. You’re absolutely right on all points concerning how Bungie dropped the ball on Destiny 2. A Kotaku article recently mentioned how developers found it “too hard” to continuously create content for players and yet the Grimoire was updated with more curious lore that would’ve wonderfully culminated with missions built around an element of what the Grimoire presented and instead of picking up where the Grimoire already left off, the lead developer decided it would be better slapping a new number and rebooting the franchise in order to draw new players and yet they’ve been doing that already with the annual expansions by releasing the base game with the major expansion. This is an utter waste of money for Activision and it surprises me to not have heard Activision pressure Bungie to fire the game director due to this decision.

Austin Adventurer if a company invests $500 million to develop a game, they expect AT LEAST double of what they put in. The whole point of an investment is not to just gain the money all back. The franchise is currently no where near that $1 billion mark and with controversies about microtransactions and lackluster content, making that revenue is in serious jeopardy.

The thing with bf2 in my opinion is that it really wasnt destined to be the worst thing ever from whole game industry. When people played the beta majority thought it was great. The progression system lootbox hell was added afterwards before the game released and i call that a big fucking scam made by money whores who need to get raped by damn rhinos.
But cod is different. Its just pure shit year after year with nothing new no matter does it have microtransactions.
But i think Joe is gonna add bf2 in hes worst list as number one as well because that shit they pulled off cannot be understated no matter if the game itself would have been decent

i bought the game about three months after release ad i must say campaign wise i like it as much as the others and for things like creating your own guns and armour however mp is a huge let down as no-one plays it and none of my old me3 friends who made it so enjoyable haven't bothered picking it up
