    Correction: In the video I say the vase dated 425-225 BC. The correct date range is 475-425 BC.

    That was super interesting to watch especially from someone new to slinging and in love with history. What I saw from watching - Slinging overhand could allow soldiers to stand closer together keeping a cohesion to the unit while slinging to the side you need a wider arc. Either way, the fluffy towel of a shield offered no protection once you committed to the throw.

      Thanks for checking it out. 👍
      Yeah, an overhand throw would allow for soldiers to be closer, but I think a sidearm throw is better for range. It allows rotation of the hips and shoulders to work in the same plane as the throwing motion. And you're right about being exposed once the throw is started. I've done slinging with shields a number of times. I've never found any way of getting around that, other than not rotating the body. But then a lot of power is lost.
      And correct again. I use a spherical silicone ice mold. The diameter is 2.5 inches. They're about the same size as a tennis ball, double the weight, and don't need to be picked up when you're done slinging. I love them as ammunition! They can be difficult to use with split pouch slings though. You need a sling that holds them well. Cheers man!

    I think the vase depicts a loop for release on the index finger instead of a knot between fingers. The loop on the index finger would then be released like an amentum attached to a javelin. I have tried such technique on darts with looped strings, the release is good and powerful as a normal knot and thumb grip release.(the video is titled "Is A Cord Enough?") at the time I used 2mm cord for the loop and it hurt a little on release. I will have to try that again on a sling. Nice video!

      Thanks!
      And great thought on a release loop. I'll have to try this technique again with that. 👍

    Also I just realised that even without ammunition that knot at the end of the sling is like a little high speed bullet on a string in itself that can reach out quite far. Imagine being whipped in the face by that travelling almost at the speed of sound!

    @Crizzdafo0 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also I think he's a soldier in the depiction on the vase. Cause I use a blanket for a target sometimes and I can say if you have it out far enough . A thick blanket or hide could slow down a rock before it gets to the holder. And you got some ammo when it's done

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think so too. His head gear also looks like it might be a helmet of some kind.
      And yeah, totally agree on a thick hide working as a shield. I hadn't thought of being able to reuse the projectile you block. That's a great thought. 👍

    Coming back to rewatch this.... I think I'm going to have to try this style. It seems about as quick as a greek, turkey or even apache style. In terms of time from the start of the throw until the projectile exits the pouch. Nice work as always, I forgot to comment last time.
    Actually, I bet this would be killer in sling dodgeball... Definitely going to try this out.
    Lastly, you weren't kidding about the slope of your yard...that last camera angle shows how sloped it is. It's like 10-15 degrees!

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! It's funny that you're revisiting this now. I just made the release cord adjustment to the sling (to a loop) and I'm hoping to (finally) record a follow up tomorrow.
      If you try it out with dodge-sling, I expect videos. 😉
      And yeah, if I had endless funds, I'd get a 20 foot wide span the whole way along the top of the yard flattened out. And just put a retaining wall along the high side. Then I could sling against the wall if I wanted, but more importantly have a long, flat, and straight lane for slinging. Some things are meant to just be dreams. 🤣

      Thanks man! Once I got use to that hold, I was getting a lot more speed than I expected to based on the earlier throws.

    Excellent video really impressive Joe , that sheild on the left arm would definitely work , your overhand throws had power and accuracy 🎉.

  • @MrJaegoor

    I definitely don't understand that correctly. The vase only shows one picture. No movement.

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree. In this video I am only experimenting on how the style may have been done based on the starting position. My interpretation could be completely wrong. But it wouldn't surprise me if the style was similar. The movement was very intuitive and worked well.

    Holding a cloak or something over the body or in front of it may have been to break up their profile when hunting. I read somewhere about some people (I forget who) saying that they throw without spinning the sling around because the movement scares away the animals they were hunting, so they threw overhead in one movement. I’ve never used a sling myself but I’ve been reading up on it. I have hunted with guns and it’s true that camouflage and stillness are helpful.

    I like the Greek for short range, shorter slings. Haven't tried it with a shield yet entirely one handed, looking forward to that. That grip is weird, I wonder why they employ that, will try it out. Thanks for the video!

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The grip very much makes it feel like your arm is just a staff sling. It was weird at first, but got comfortable very quickly.

    Could it be overhand, since that motion would have been used already for spears and javelins? This is assuming that they got some training in other weapons too.

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Possibly. The overhand motion would certainly be familiar from other weapons. But I think the overhand throw is the best fit because it gives the longest distance to accelerate the projectile before release.

      The esthetics to me, are that his ace would be behind his arm, with eyes poking over the hide; probably with some padding on his arm underneath, where the helmet would protect his head, leaving a very small target in his eyes, notice he's not swinging overhead, but his swinging would happen behind him, his hand and his arm which are his bread and butter on the field are protected, and also intentions hidden from a would be enemy awaiting to see a movement in order to telegraph or avoid, or raise his shield to defend himself. There's an entire story told just by the appearance, the stance, and everything about this tapestry on this vase, just by glance.

    • @joe_meadmaker
      @joe_meadmaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would certainly be possible. Although I don't think that would really add any power because the power stroke would still basically be the same. For this test I wanted to start from a stationary position. Basically the "locked and loaded" version of a sling to see how fast I could get projectiles moving.
