You made me buy both Dock Fishing Poles at Walmart and now I’ve seen a little more expensive one at m6 Walmart that I obviously have to purchase now thank you for a new addiction
Thank you for all the lessons you have taught me thus far I appreciate your humble approach at teaching. When I was a kid I was told throw a worm on a hook and no one taught proper knots have a revived fondness for fishing and to be honest I like popping my gear almost as much as I like catching a fish thanks again
edit; Skipper I realize you're the expert but you approached this rod wrong. You opened up your tool-box grabbed a wrench and tried pounding a nail. Sure you can make it work but it's not going to be fun or efficient. This rod should be used vertical fishing off a dock and that's why it's probably called the Dock Demon. Walking a marina dock dropping a marabou jig straight down jigging it as you slowly walk up and down the dock will probably slay the fish. With the line being vertical there is no slack to be taken up to set the hook. There is also no need to have a crazy wind up cast since you'll either be just dropping the bait straight down or just gently flicking your bait about 20ft at the most towards shore to work panfish on beds. Small rods like these we use to jig for walleyes threw the ice. In portable tents we use even shorter ones. I think they would work very well vertical jigging on docks that allow you to fish off. Check before trespassing though. The small size would make it easier to vertical jig between the dock and either boats or boathouses. I grew up on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border and would spend 3 solid months every summer vacation prowling the docks on the Mississippi River. The only cheap fishing combos back then were Zebco 202's and later Diawa's ultra-light Ugly-stik combo.
Shout out to the Zebco Dock Demon! I caught more fish on that rod last season than any of my other rods. I literally burned the spincasting reel out. I'll either replace it with a 33 micro gold, or a Daiwa Microcast. Yes, just like Hey Skipper, I'm about to put like $40 reel on a $10 combo. Seriously I call it my "Little Red Rod" and it has got me all superstitious, like I won't go fishing unless I have it with me, it's a talisman. Also indestructible.
Yeah i definitely recommend the dock demon for pier fishing as a utility rod. It make it easier to get under tall piers without getting snagged and catching little guys in the shade.
Try the Zebco Slingshot Spin Combo, $ 10 to$20, 5 ft 6 inch to 6 ft. Great for kids. Usually give rods away to those who have none. Bought 5 this year. Also comes in a spincast. Really works well.
Those dock demons are awesome little rods, great video, and I hope your moving goes nice and smooth, I live in Kansas so it's not often I get to go sea fishing, I am going on a vacation here soon and am getting prepared, thanks to your channel I am not completely clueless about what to do, but dang, that saltwater gear is expensive, I am going to try to get your bait box, hopefully that will help me catch a big 'un! Thank you for teaching me how to saltwater fish, everything you do is much appreciated by saltwater noobs like me, Best wishes!
I live along the coast in South Carolina-and if you’re coming pretty much anywhere on the east coast, though I’m not sure about the far northeast, you can almost always catch fish in the surf with just shrimp and fish bites on a high low rig. You can catch Whiting, small sharks, and stingrays really close to shore, so you don’t need an expensive surf rod or anything-hopefully a helpful tip
Brother, that combo is so much better than the ones we could buy in the 1970's. Seriously. With the advanced manufacturing techniques and new plastics, those inexpensive combos are so good.
a year or so ago I got a zebco dock demon and an Uglystick dock runner and I still use them time to time just for the heck of it. Sometimes they’re a blast but I usually keep them around for the nephews and one of my friend’s kids who like to fish with us time to time.
I always keep a dock demon in my truck. It’s fun to use on trout and Pan fish. I recently moved to Northern Florida to spend more time fishing. Say hi sometime you guys come down again.
Awesome! If you found this helpful you gotta check out my website, I custom make a ton of gear to help you with your next fishing trip! www.heyskipperfishing.com 😁
Sorry but I have to disagree, It definitely does has it’s place with little kids.. For our area, the kids can catch yellow perch and panfish by the dock with that rod. Inland fishing is much different than coastal fishing, for the type of fishing you’re doing it is definitely inadequate. But I found the young children can’t comfortably handle any rods over say 5 ft, and we rarely need more than 6-10 lb test line with small hooks say 8-10 and a couple of small splitshot sinkers tipped with worms or powerbait for use in stocked trout lakes, ponds, streams and rivers near me. For the application your using this rod I agree that it’s not good, but for light tackle fishing near me it’s great for young beginners. Love watching you and your family fishing, thanks for your continued enthusiasm and great content!👍🤟
I agree with you Ray. It is, after all, called a "Dock" Demon. It's not really intended for casting. I think the video shows the rod/reel is certainly capable to landing nice fish. It's also a great introduction to spinning reels. It doesn't hold a ton of line so if it does happen to bird's nest its not a huge pain to respool. The drag actually works. I don't feel like I am using a kid's toy when I am fishing with my Ugly Stick counterpart, the Dock Runner. I also don't feel quite so bad if one ends up and the bottom of the lake by accident. Which can happen when fishing with kids or myself. Thanks for the video @Hey Skipper.
It’s interesting because when I first started out the very first thing I realized is that I need a full size rod. And a better reel than many of the combos sold out there. The Dock Demons work very well for jigging on the local wharfs. But for bigger and better fish I do think a full size is better. But I guess it depends on who the beginner is. Love your adventures guys. Keep well!!
i have 2 dock demon rods and love using them. 1 has a penn pursuit4 4000, 30lb braid and 4/0 circle hook and the other has a penn pursuit4 6000, 80lb braid and a 6/0 circle hook. the looks i get while landing huge fish is hilarious. i have alot of other longer rods and reels also but the dock demons are just crazy fun to use.
You can't find the deluxe anymore. I've had one for years now, and that thing is literally indestructible. I have slayed plenty fish in south Florida with that thing. Paired it with a cheap walmart shimano sienna 1000, 8 lbs power pro braid and 10 lbs mono leader. Nothing but slams with this littler machine on 1 and 1/0 hooks. Make ppl reconsider their rigs when the see the fish I land and they don't get jack with their 7ft rods and 50 lines ... lmao 🤣 . Keep it in my truck 24/7. That thing have been to war lmao, still going. From salt to fresh water ... no problem. Sad part is I can't find a replacement anymore. Walmart stopped selling them.
The past year and a half ive been getting into trying out new things for me like making music, exercising and lately, fishing. There’s a nearby park with a pond that a lot of people fish at and so Im obsessed with smaller travel rods, because i can put them in my laptop back (that i use for music) with a really small tackle box and take all the things i need with me to the park. Ive tried telescopic rods, full sized rods, and children’s rods while i get into the hobby to give me something to break from when im having a musical writer’s block. But the dock demon has been my favorite backpack companion so far. Its not like i dont like full-sized, more serious rods either. I have a few big ones and i used a friend’s full-sized rod one time that was the best to use rod ive ever had (forgot the name but im currently looking for the brand cause i really one one for dedicated fishing trips) but the zebco dock demon has been my second favorite and its a no brainer given the strength and portability in comparison. If you dont want to spend a lot of money as a beginner/hiker and you end up getting one, you wont be disappointed. Its a GREAT rod and my most used rod actually. (However you MIGHT be disappointed if you accidentally get the ones at walmart that other people screwed off the drag adjustment knob or handle, cause that happened to my friend. So INSPECT the dock demon before you pick it up)
My dock demon is my trunk, on-the-go, never leaves my car, pull off the side of the road favorite rod. I paired it up with a little reel from BPS. Never leave home without it.
I’ve had the dock demon and the dock runner. Dock runner is the best. Change reels out on either of them and they’re both amazing. Dock runner is more sensitive.
The ugly stick dock runner is my go to bait fish rod for piers. I put 20lb braid on it with a sabiki rig and 1oz weight and it can handle it like a champ.
Wow! Brendon and Erin That's a nice fishing combo from Zebco. I got a gift from my aunt in Ohio a Zebco 202 Spincast reel and i was not able to test it but soon, you'll see it in my channel too. Love that Dock Demon sooooo badly
I use my dock demon to fish for panfish and its a dream. I've caught a few bowfin on it and that was about as insane as my overslot red on my inshore rod!
would you say that the Deluxe version of the Dock Demon a better choice than the regular version? I think you would have gotten better hook sets if you were using your deluxe version.
Hay skipper what a fantastic video. I wish I could get one of your bait boxes but I live in Perth Western Australia. Thanks you so much for the video and see you next time bro 🎣🐟👌🇦🇺
I would like to see a reel that you can upgrade the little poles with a spinner and a bait caster because I have a runner and a demon a spinner and a bait caster what good reels should we use for upgrading.
Your argument seems like it would make a beginner fisherman better in some ways tho because it’s more difficult then going to long rod you could adjust quicker not ripping a jaw off
i think these look like a fun way to remind us to have fun fishing....thought about issues setting the hook, are you or have you tried using circle hooks to take advantage of the almost "self-setting" nature of a circle hook? Might make things better? Or maybe worse? All I know is I am going to grab a few of these to hand out to family for a fun day fishing the Sacramento River banks for whatever is close to shore. Then we can all giggle and have a bit of silliness on the river.
It is called a dock demon for a reason. To use on a dock and not casting far.I got one for ice fishing and put a spring bobber on it for sensitivity.Cheap alternative than a real ice fishing rod.
When I’m going for catfish I use my dock runner for panfish. Keeps the kid and me entertained. And if you get the technique right, you can cast pretty far.
I really enjoy your channel. I found it while visiting my daughter in Florida my question you tested $15 set ups and $500. How bout doing a video with mid range fishing equipment for those of us that can’t go out and buy a $500 reel. Thanks
A lot of problems with those buget sets happen to be the durability of the reels. Usually the rods are great, but like you did, an upgraded reel will be needed.
Hey skipper i m Shah love to see ur movies i admire the way ur teaching style Now i m seriously thinking to buy fishing rod & accessories. Love u Guys Regards Saeed Shah Pakistan
I just got me a castking black hawk 2 . Do you know about this rod, I just heard they are good quality and I wanted to try One, I have not used it yet. It's like seven feet long and incredible ligth. Let me know what you know about them please. I planning to use a 30lb, braided line I Like your videos you and dad are very knowledgeable, take care friend.
Over a years watching you videos and you inspired me to make my own channel ( Kingfisher's TV ) Thank you for sharing you your fishing adventure. Full support from filipino Anglers. Please Shout Out for your next video
They make great ice fishing rods. Have one and caught a 3lb largie ice fishing this season. Plus I've used it during the summer and caught a bunch of largies on it.
This is all I fish with, ditched the cheap reel slapped me a nice zebco33mini on the actual dock demon rod and I slay all multi species from creek lakes ponds. I would love to salt water fish with it
I have multiple of these rods for years and each one of my kids have learned to fish from it. Since then they have moved on to bigger and better setups. They take serious abuse and catch decent size fish. I keep one in my truck and one in my camper.
The "Deluxe" rod is thicker than the conventional one. Also i use a heavy duty reel with it. Great combination if you don't want a conventional rod. Great for backpacking & hiking.
Best place to take a beginner fisher is to the pier when you know you can catch tons of fish on a Sabiki rig. That is always fun. I never take any beginner fishers to lakes, because of how slow lakes can be. Don’t forget (if talking about kids) a rod should also be sized to that kids height. No point in buying a small child a 7 foot rod if they can’t cast it. 5 foot range is better for smaller children.
Well if you have circle hooks you don't really have to set the hook...for years I've never set the hook once I started using circle hooks, only time I've had to set hooks is when lures are involved
A rod like this IMHO would be good if your obviously fishing up and down or fishing close in obviously. The reel is trash as many know. So if anything upgrade reel to a 1500 size reel, get in a kayak, and upgrade the line to braided fishing line and fluorocarbon leader. It be fun for its purpose. But have fun with it.
Mannnn. You're not using the Dock Demon for sunfish. That's your problem. It's meant to be fished vertically at freshwater dock posts (hense the name). You were using it for saltwater fishing.... With like 6# line to boot. It really surprised and impressed me that your hooksets didn't immediately break off the trout. As for your missed hooksets, that's due to the hook size being too large for the fish that were biting your bait (namely, the perch), along with the unfavorable ratio of the rod length to bobber leader depth and cast distance lengths. If you had known that to begin with, would you review it the same? You were completely outside of the target application for this one, but you figured out how to use it effectively. It seemed to me that the perch were set up lower than the trout and your shrimp bait and hook combined were too big for the perch's mouths, but just right for the trout's mouth size (particularly, because of the time you reeled back a tailless shrimp). I think if you had shortened your bobber depth, you would have had even better success with your target fish and better hooksets (although, you managed well). Anyway, that's my two. Tight lines.
There is an uglystik one that costs $2 more. It's a much better reel and rod combo. It's slightly longer and built way better. I've upgraded it with a $40 pflueger and I caught a 20lb carp with it. Dock demon sucks compared to the uglystik combo.
You guys r missing out, Shakespeare makes a dock demon ugly stick Avengers pole and reel. The string on the reel lasted longer than the reel, and I had it and used it consistently for 3 years
Ugly stik dock runner, same concept, same price. My first rod I bought to help get me into fishing and it worked super well, still bring it with me on every trip with my normal rods
Why would you ever go back to long cumbersome rods or rods that pull apart in the middle if the lil ones catch fish maybe a lil more of a challenge but your not walking around with 8 foot poles hitting trees and power lines
The rod is designed for ice fishing, where you lower your jig, or bait, straight down,,and is generally used for panfish, and small gamefish,,,,its not designed for casting, and sweeping sideways, power hooksets,,, it's meant for an upward sweep on panfish, thru a hole in the ice,,,,,when used what it was designed for, it works great,,,you're hunting elephants, with a pea shooter!!,,,,,,😎
you dont have to "set" circle hooks. you let the fish do the work. thats why i only use circle hooks nowadays. gone are the days of me "yanking" the rod like a madman. i only wish i had switched to braid sooner. i would occasionally lose fish because the line popped and it was fresh mono 30lb test. since switching to braid i have YET to lose a fish.
The rod is not for bobber's 🤔 I don't have that much problem setting up the hookup on stream fishing 🎣 size #6 hooks or smaller to #10 hooks. Trout fishing fresh water. Salt water ⁉️
You made me buy both Dock Fishing Poles at Walmart and now I’ve seen a little more expensive one at m6 Walmart that I obviously have to purchase now thank you for a new addiction

Awesome video
Best place to take a beginner fisher is to the pier when you know you can catch tons of fish on a Sabiki rig. That is always fun. I never take any beginner fishers to lakes, because of how slow lakes can be. Don’t forget (if talking about kids) a rod should also be sized to that kids height. No point in buying a small child a 7 foot rod if they can’t cast it. 5 foot range is better for smaller children.
Well if you have circle hooks you don't really have to set the hook...for years I've never set the hook once I started using circle hooks, only time I've had to set hooks is when lures are involved
Next video please do good reels on dock rods both bait caster and spinner
You got it!
I use them in Ireland on canals for small fish, roach, perch, minnows etc
Dame good 🐟 pole I keep on the back of my Harley sissy bar very portable.
I live fishing but not to test crazy not sure rods like you do. 😅😅😅
Looks like an excellent rod for kids
A rod like this IMHO would be good if your obviously fishing up and down or fishing close in obviously. The reel is trash as many know. So if anything upgrade reel to a 1500 size reel, get in a kayak, and upgrade the line to braided fishing line and fluorocarbon leader. It be fun for its purpose. But have fun with it.
You should have hooked one of those small sand trout on a 2/0 circle hook and free lined it.
The string on the reel lasted longer than the reel, and I had it and used it consistently for 3 years
Wow that’s great
Try circle hooks - no hookset. Tight lines and fair winds.
For salt water fishing try using beef stew meat and/or beef jerky.
Like to use the mini rods there fun to catch live bait
Dock demon my first ever fishing pole
This dock demon is good for catching bait fishing
Saludos de Tijuana
I’m not a big Zebco guy, my first rig was a Zebco. It sucked
The tiny rod is small but mighty!
I believe it would be a good ice fishing rod
Ugly stik dock runner, same concept, same price. My first rod I bought to help get me into fishing and it worked super well, still bring it with me on every trip with my normal rods
glad we did not get a visit from suitcase Erin
The Noodle rod...🤪
I recognized the truck
Why would you ever go back to long cumbersome rods or rods that pull apart in the middle if the lil ones catch fish maybe a lil more of a challenge but your not walking around with 8 foot poles hitting trees and power lines
that rod is great for fishing 'udang galah' fresh water prawn.
Better reels might help with the problems I want to see that good reel on tiny rods
You are convincing me it’s better for short rods it’s more complicated it’s more satisfying unless you are starving
Wow
:)
The rod is not for bobber's 🤔 I don't have that much problem setting up the hookup on stream fishing 🎣 size #6 hooks or smaller to #10 hooks. Trout fishing fresh water. Salt water ⁉️
