    This may sound counter intuiitive but i wear a thick wool hat over my ears when i write the song so i know it doesnt sound accurate and it stops me from reaching for the dynamics and EQ until it's time to mix. It also protects my ears and helps me think about the arrangement a bit more. Then when i go to mix the hat comes off and it always sounds much better and helps me objectively find any problems.

    Been watching you on and off for years, and there's one thing you do consistently well. You cover very specific topics that no one else does. Respect!

    Thanks for explaining this out. I usually have a tough time getting ssl bus compression right. Thus is very helpful

    I only tern the master bus on right at the end after I have mixed everything, sometimes I dont even tern it on ever and instead do the final master compression and limiting in a app called gold wave. If I see alot of peaks all over the wav file I know that something needs compression, and that can be found by simply playing those parts to find what's peaking and then going back into Reason and putting compression on the specific tracks that need it. Finally the master bus comes on just to blend all the tracks together and make the wave form balanced with no stupid cactus like peaks all over the place.

    Thank you very much! I usually starting with turn On Bus Compressor (and On compressor on each channel on top of that) and Master Section bypass - off. Basically I'm doing this because of volume loudness seeking. Will review my approach.

    What is the reason for setting 30 ms attack? Is there problems that occur if it is set lower? Thank you for the video

      I just realized you explained it down later in the video, that it causes the kick's punch to be killed. Thanks!

    I tend to turn it on and off throughout the mix including using a stereo/mono rack on the master so I can see how the mix translates in both S/M with and without Bus compression 🙂. The settings you've shared are pretty much what I start with on the master bus which it's nice to see someone else show it on Reason 🙂

      there is no such thing as 'industry standard compression settings', there is no standard for compression settings, if you think so - you do not understand how compression works. A song with fast BPM would have a different setup for attack/release than song with low BPM, just one example of many....not to mention threshold setup depending on how 'hot' is your mix, not even mention RATIO settings - it's well-known knowledge that KNEE and entire compression works bit different depending on RATIO settings - with small RATIO 1.5 - the knee is much deeper than with 1:10 ratio - where it's almost like limiter....and I can go on for a long time. I am afraid this video is not very informative being perfectly honest, I guess the geezer know 4kSSL compressor only from the computer screen...and certianly doesnot know who Andy Wallace was and how and why he used ssl 4k ON when mixing. Time for googling Wallace name kids:)

      @@tresporros lol that was my thought - variance in sound, instruments & desired mix, etc., even if all this tended to stay "identical" differences in tempo will completely change its affect...
      Also seems weird that OP uses it constantly toggled on/off like it's a pre-post utility or something. 🤔

    Super helpful video! So I produce a lot of edm and am struggling with side chain compression/ clarity of the subs/ bass synths etc. tutorials/ things should I watch to get better with this. I love reason 13 so much just really don’t know a lot about the mastering and audio engineering side to clean everything up for export. Seems like when I upload it to SoundCloud or whatever streaming platform, it sounds like straight trash

    I saw another video where someone said to put a high pass filter of the whole mix on the sidechain input so it only compresses the high end.

    It's confusing when people say different things, anothr post I read said that fast compression setting is under 5 ms is always better almost, but that was just for compressors in general though. I always use auto for relase, maybe that's wrong. Anyway. I've always heard you should mix into the compressor, id est not turn if on when the song is already mixed and finnished, but earlier so that you don't have to rebalance all levels and stuff.
    I usually make my song and then turn on the master compressor.

      We all work differently. I use slow attack/fast release 2:1 ratio with no more than 3-4 db gain reduction since 1984 on the SSL master compressor. It is probably the ONLY thing I do the same way every time, literally. OK, sometimes I’ll use 4:1 ratio, but only when I want to hear the effect. Adding the compressor at the end is my preferred way to mix since I learned to mix without working against a compressor. If you add it and it causes you to need to fix balances, you’re doing too much for how I use it.
      That said, we all work differently!

    The problem is there is no high pass filter built in. I use control room out to a mix channel and into the master sidechain input and use the EQ section on the mix channel to cut the lows. You can use a filter but I think this is the most CPU friendly way.
    I also never go above 2:1 and with threshold set at around -20'ish I am just bouncing into the -2db Range.

      Hi pass and low pass filter EQ is easily available in Reasons M class two band EQ or Free RE Kilohearts 3 band EQ, both simple and easy to do. Nearly all EQ I do is done with these.

    • @chocomalk
      @chocomalk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure but the Reason mix channel has a full EQ as well and never adds to the CPU load.@@HOLLASOUNDS

    • @HOLLASOUNDS
      @HOLLASOUNDS ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chocomalk Almost all Reason effects including EQ devices dont add very much CPU, that's worth worrying about so long as your using a i7 to i9 powered PC or Laptop you should never see the CPU go past 50% I tested this by loading up 30 Objekts playing random midi from each and through a bunch of random effects all over, modulated every one. I basically tried to break Reason and the CPU never went past 25%. Maby You need a new computer.

    • @chocomalk
      @chocomalk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TBH I am just coming from an old Mac so yeah CPU use was a real issue and I guess this is a hold over from that lol. Still I have it as a template and it's just as functional since it sits in place and doesn't get changed.@@HOLLASOUNDS

      I think its just abbey roads reverb and Saturn 2, and if u basicly turn down dynamics in Saturn for all bands u get kind of ...transient get little snappier

    mate.....you probably never heard of Andy Wallace? Have you? and btw, Attack and Threshold and Release - should not be used as you explain it, I am not sure you understand how compressor work
