Nintendo is not EA or Activision. They will not charge you $15 for 3 maps. They are giving you a whole GAMES WORTH of maps for that price.
Nintendo is one of the 5 devs that doesn't price gouge on DLC (namely because they don't need to). They actually expand upon the game as compared to what other Devs do,
You're only paying $5 more compared to a full price 3DS game.You're essentially getting a whole other game and then some for half the price than the game itself. And altogether would cost less than a full price standalone console title.
If you're going to hate DLC then more power to you, but hate it for being misused; not because it exists at all. And please don't lump all devs that do DLC in with the worst of the lot.

Yeah, I thought all was lost with Birdo, but I found out she's in this game as an unlockable character. I have high hopes that Bowser Jr. Dry Bones, Birdo, Diddy, and Petey may be unlockable in Mario Kart 8. After all, Nintendo's not one to reveal EVERYTHING before launch. They did the same thing with Brawl when they started revealing hidden characters after the game came out.
Mario Mastar I hope so, I mean I was crushed when they revealed Rosalina as the only hidden character in 3D World.

Me too, the game was an allusion to Super Mario bros 2 (USA), so WHERE'S BIRDO!? It would've made so much sense to have her appear in various spots since she was one of the main antagonists from that game. Such a shame they wasted that opportunity to give Birdo a bit more spotlight. Kind of like Waluigi still having yet to show up in a Wario game beyond the cameo in Wario ware smooth moves as a crayon drawing.
If you're complaining about this DLC addition (yes, ADDITION), then you obviously need to check the content. Mario Golf at retail offers more content than any other Mario Golf game, for less than standard retail. The $15 DLC nearly doubles the games content, so really, stop bitching about some additions to a game. If the retail game had like 3 courses and 5 characters, then we can talk about bad DLC.
It's not the content itself that's a problem, it's about the fact that it's day-1 DLC -- pre-made content that was clearly cut from the final product to be sold seperately. It doesn't matter that the game is only 30$, it's an incomplete product.

So what if it has more content than TT? Again, day 1 DLC is content cut from the final game to be sold seperately. If you're gonna do DLC, do it the right way, and develop it later down the line AFTER the core game is finished. Or at least pretend that you did for all I care, just don't sell it on release day ffs...
How do you know this is cut content? Do you work for Nintendo to know this? Day one DLC isn't always cut content, the game could have been finished a while ago, and they worked on this DLC afterwards.
And you completely missed his point. If the game has more content that the previous one, this DLC is just an added bonus. Nothing more.
Is it sad this DLC actually looks good? To everyone who is complaining in the comments, where there is a lot, the game is $30 and buying all the DLC is $15. Essentially, it makes the game $5 extra if you got everything, but just like most DLC, you don't have to buy it and nothing here is at all essential to the game. People need to take a chill pill sometimes and before anyone says I'm just a Nintendo fanboy, I just recently played Rusty's Real Deal Baseball...Not a huge fan of the way it's done there at all

***** I disagree. This DLC was made while the game was being developed and is as such not "extra content", but "cut content" which they now charge you for. Your purchase of the base game pays the development of the DLC which you don't get unless you pay extra.
I know it's apparently $10 cheaper in the US (it never is in europe) and getting the content for an extra $5 is not much for you, but Nintendo absolutely skewers the european market with premium (WWHD on Eshop costs equal to $90 here) so I will be charged another premium. This is bullshit.
And it's also about principle. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
nico641 I've done a lot of research into this and have compared this game to the previous console version (Toadstool Tour). I guarantee you that this is indeed truly additional content. Not cut content.
I can give you a extensive rundown if you wish but I'll give the short version for now.
_- Toadstool Tour (TT) has 7 courses with 18 holes for a total of _*_126 holes_*_. World Tour (WT) has 4 with 18 and 6 with 9, also _*_126 holes_*_._
_- TT has _*_5_*_ single player modes, WT has _*_8_*_ modes_
_- TT has _*_16 different characters_*_ of which 13 return in WT which has _*_17 characters_*_ including your Mii. Additionally Gold Mario will be made available after the last DLC comes out for a total of _*_18 characters_*_._
_- TT has only _*_local multiplayer_*_ WT has both _*_local and online multiplayer_*_._
*New* in WT:
_- WT multiplayer also features planned _*_Tournaments_*_ by Nintendo and other Tournaments sponsored by _*_Callaway Golf_*_ (an external company). As well as _*_custom tournaments_*_ and _*_skill based_*_ matches._
_- WT has _*_items_*_._
_- WT also has an gear shop where you can purchase _*_500 different customisable gear_*_ items for your Mii character._
_(This is paid by _*_in-game money_*_ - coins -, micro-transactions aren't anywhere in sight - something that is unfortunately a rarity with these kind of features these days)_
As you can see WT has everything TT has plus significantly more content. This is all just the main game (€40 MSRP). Toadstool Tour for the GameCube was €60 MSRP
You should realise a few things:
- Whether _additional_ content is made after the game or in parallel does not matter: the two have separate budgets and often separate teams working on it.
- DLC is (almost) _always_ planned in advance. You cannot make such business decisions on a whim. It is always planned and _when_ they make it doesn't mean anything for you as a customer.
- Content should be judged on it's own value: 1) The main game: is it quality content? Is it a full fledged (finished) game - is it not missing key features or content barred behind a paywall? Is it priced fairly?
2) The Additional content: is it quality content? Is it something you want on top of the main game? Is it priced fairly?
- When where and how this content is made available is of no significance at all. Actually for the customer it's preferable that it is made available as soon as possible (without loosing quality).
- A well organised project _naturally_ starts working on dlc as soon as possible and preferably planned just so that the first dlc can be made available to customers from the moment they purchase the main product.
As I said in my first comment, there are only two requirements paid dlc has to meet:
1) Being truly additional to the game.
2) Being sold for a fair price.
This Mario Golf: World Tour DLC meets both of those requirements. It's up to the customer if he _wants_ to buy it, or _has enough_ with the fully finished main game.

You are not going to get a big simultaneous response from people any more after half a year or even a full year.
People will return to this game sporadically on their own time, and it's not like a big new piece of story or a extension of a world map with quests on which people will jump even when you release it after a year.
It's so sad that the actually great idea of DLC has been ruined by greedy people..
Now Nintendo is going to dive into DLC we have to get used to getting great DLC which actually adds to the game but is still optional - and affordable..

Don’t worry, the DLC here is just extra! If you enjoy the game enough you have the option to purchase even more content! The game developers really delivered on a high quality experience with this game and the DLC is the cherry on the top!

All of these tracks and characters were definitely done prior to release. (meaning these were pre-planned DLC, and NOT new content expanding on the full expirience, but already finished content purposely left out of the game to sell it for extra cash. As you yourself just stated: As someone who wants to play more, i wouldn't mind paying NEW content. But Mario Golf World Tour won't let you expirience the full game without paying more.

Well as much as I feel this stuff should have been included on the cartridge, It looks enticing. First two packs for the simple fact that we'll be getting more of the not so gimmicky courses, and the third because, quite simply put, Rosalina is a Badass.

All of you Americans shouldn't complain about anything, you're getting the game for $30, and if you buy the Season Pass you're getting both the game and all the available DLC for $45, but here in Denmark, the game alone costs $60.
Same here, I live in Germany and you have to pay 55€ for Game and DLC together (76$) and the Americans are mad about paying 45$. I don't understand it, you should feel happy to get the game that cheap.
Yea I know. It's not Nintendo's fault that it costs that much over here though, it's just cause we're in Europe, and electronics are generally more expensive over here.

People, stop complaining about no unlockable characters. If you BOTHERED to do research, you'll see that there's 4 characters to unlock in the game: Toad, Kamek, Paratroopa, and Birdo.

Not mad about DLC, just upset that it's Day 1. Pikmin 3 and how they handled DLC was much better. Plus, shouldn't Toadette, Rosalina and Nabbit be characters naturally in the game?

True, I agree that the content is fully additional (unlike skins) without making it necessary to enjoy the game. But I wouldn't mind paying the standard $40 to have it all in the game to begin with. I see your points, but I'm more old-school so I'm initially wary of DLC. For the most part though, I think that Mario Golf handles it fairly well, although I'm not the biggest fan.
I disagree with you though on on-disc/cartridge DLC though. locking away content that's already in the game for a price isn't fair. If it was free to get the unlock regardless if it's on-disc (similar to Pokémon event items), I'm cool with that.
I believe they decided to sell that part on dlc as a two part plan. On retail version the dont get as much money as on digital version (which is true for all publishers and developers, but in nintendo's special case they get 100% of their cut) So by giving you that part on DLC they probably make even more money than with the retail version .
Secondly, they make the base and main game more atractive by not costing full price, which in turn, makes it posible for the "mario golf" series to become more known and popular.
Yeah it's a smart business move and as far as my research goes, it's not "on-disc" or anything, which is nice. *cough* Capcom *cough*. While I'm not personally a fan of the move, it's at least executed fairly.
***** Ok, I'd like to point something out.
Everyone seems to point to Capcom (and specifically SFxT) as _the_ reason why on-disk DLC is bad. However, it was not the fact that it was on-disk that made that game bad. It was the fact that they crippled the game.
The main game lacked all kinds of features that should be in the game characters, skins, stages etc. The amount of content you got for the $60 you paid was incredibly small. _That_ was what was wrong with the game.
_Then_ we come to the DLC which was _overpriced_, small, and indeed mostly stuff that actually should have been in the game from the get go..
Now these flaws _would not change_ whether it was on-disk or true DLC. - The game was badly overpriced and incomplete _that_ was it's problem.
There is nothing inherently wrong with the location of the DLC since it's just digital media. And there's nothing inherently wrong with developing extra content that can't be fitted within the budget of the main game in parallel with the main game.
To illustrate here's an anology:
- If I sell you one apple now and one orange tomorrow, _you bought an apple and an orange_.
- If I sell you one apple _and_ an orange now, _you bought an apple and an orange_.
- If I sell you one apple and one orange and put them both in the same bag, _you still bought an apple and an orange_.
- If I sell you an apple and put an orange in the back in a locked box and sell the lot for the price of an apple, and later sell you the combination for the lock for the price of an orange (which you can conveniently pay for via paypal) I went to a lot of trouble to give you access to the orange as quickly as possible, but ultimately, _you _*_still_*_ bought a apple and an orange!_
It does not matter when or how I sell it to you, you bought them both in all cases. And the apple isn't less complete because the orange was also available. Now if the apple and orange are rotten or not, and if they taste delicious or just good, and if they are overpriced or a bargain, that's a whole different story..
Quality, quantity, completeness and price/value are all unrelated to the content's location and method of delivery.
Fun Fact: All 6 of these DLC courses are just reskins of all the courses from the N64 game.

Because you disappointed some of your fans with the Mario Kart 8 roster since there are so many other characters that can be used besides just making baby and metal versions of the same character.

I don't think any day 1 DLC could be described as "getting it right"
Planning DLC from the start is abhorrent, if this game was made 7 years ago, we would have gotten all of the content on the cartridge. No matter how good it is, it's like they're cutting up the game and selling it in pieces. The only reason to do that is to make more money.
DLC done right would be something like Sonic Lost World or Pikmin 3; an afterthought, done to add more to an already finished game. Planning DLC from day 1 just cheapens the whole thing.

Gold Mario is actually from New Super Mario Bros 2. If you get the Gold Flower, every enemy you kill will give you coins, and as well, your fire balls will turn everything into coins.
It's actually a legit form of Mario and unlike Metal Mario in Mario Kart 7, this one is used very creatively, as you can't get items with him, but EVERY shot you fire will be a Gold Fire Flower shot.
If they were to put Invisible Luigi in the game, I could see him having a perma Boo item effect (always hitting through trees or ignoring Lie issues like the bomb does), and Metal Wario could permanently ignore wind. If they do stuff like that, then I don't mind Metal characters being separate playable characters.

It should be DLC. The main game is even larger in content than the previous - with the same amount of holes (126) more characters (17 vs. 16) and more features (like the item shop - free by the way: no microtransactions - and the online featurs)
This is all additional content: in total 108 holes (almost doubling the original amount) and 4 additional characters (of which one - gold mario - is a timed bonus for people with the seasons pass and later available to all for free)
So you've got nothing _at all_ to whine about.

mikeyn1gm I don't know for sure if it really that "obviously" shows that it's actually part of the main game..
One could simply decide to plan DLC in advance - since it could simply be content they couldn't otherwise put in the game because they can't afford it with the budget they have/choose.
The price of a game is determined by the cost of development, manufacturing and distribution, estimated sales and a profit margin.. If a game's price becomes $100 as a result you will have to adjust the estimated sales since not many people will buy a $100 game..
That's why in actuality the price of a game isn't determined but chosen in accordance to the most optimal expected sales (with big budget AAA games often $60). Then the profit margin is taken off of that and the budget of a game is determined. A concept is approved if it can be made possible within that budget.
If the development team comes up with ideas - or has them in advance before the project is fully planned -, that are not expected to fall within that budget (or the if team decides that other ideas are more important) those ideas are often scrapped.
However, sometimes it's possible to develop those ideas anyway under a different budget: as paid DLC, of course with this a new estimate has to be made of how many people are expected to buy the DLC which can determine it's size (as a result of including chosen price and profit margin in the equation).
The main game is (should be) properly developed and completed without regard for the DLC as a fully functional game with all expected content.
The DLC can be developed on several optional periods, by several optional parties:
- During development of the main game;
- Right after development of the main game;
- Months after development of the main game.
- By (part of) the main development team;
- By a separate team.
The choices made here determine when the DLC will be ready. And then the developers can choose when to _make_ it available (immediately or later)
But really, to be honest, the choices made here do not affect the value of the main game, or the value of the DLC: where, when, and how the DLC is made available is of no influence to the value of the game itself or the value of the DLC.
So actually, day one or day on hundred is no indication at all if a game is a full game or not, and if the DLC is truly additional or not. In reality, the only thing that matters is the quantity and quality of content in the game and it's completeness. If the main game is a full game properly made with all the content that should be expected, I'd say it's a fine game, regardless of whether there is or isn't DLC and whenever that DLC is made available..
The real issue here is not the DLC but is the completeness of the main game. If the main game is incomplete then _that_ is where the problem lies, not with the DLC. If the DLC is then completing the game - regardless of when it is released, it is a rip-off and indeed an clandestine attempt to swindle the customer.
But again the timing of the DLC doesn't have anything to do with it - in fact: a smart and deliberate swindler would craft the DLC in such a way that it would be possible to release the DLC a month later under the pretence that it is additional content.
But that wouldn't change that the main game was incomplete.
However with this game we have a tool to check if the game is complete: it's predecessor.
When we examine this game and it's content and compare it with the previous one (Toadstool Tour for the NGC) we can discover that the new game has actually a lot _more_ and _new_ content compared to the old one - which even was more expensive!
So my conclusion must be that, obviously, this game is much more than just complete, it's been improved compared to it's predecessor (as for it's content).
Then, as a consequence, we have to conclude as well that it's DLC is truly additional and not cut from the game in order to make a quick buck.

***** That "tool" approach of yours is invalid simply because the Successor of a game will naturally have more things........we've always known this. The predecessor having less does not mean that the sucessor is complete (Which is basically your logic here).
Nothing that you said justifies the position of the consumer with DLC of this kind (Very unnecesarily long and uncredible response btw) and planning DLC in advance is still bad because of the fact that it's planned in "advance" already qualifies it as main game content.

honestly, it really sucks they're offering DLC for this. however, the game is retailing for 30 dollars oppose to the usual 40 dollars for 3DS games. so effectively, we're paying an extra 5 dollars for the season pass.... i know, i know. it still sucks. when you take this perspective, it burns a little bit less. i guess.
The DLC essentially almost doubles the content. (108 extra holes to the 126 in the main game - and 3 extra characters)

Nintendo don't do it :( don't become like the other guys and make us buy characters that should already with the game. Nintendo is know for being the one who does not fall in line with the rest of the crew.

There has been cut nothing from the main game - it has actually added features (an item shop - with in-game money not real money), extensive online multiplayer features, and one extra playable character in the core game. It has more courses and the same amount of total holes (126) and the price is much cheaper than the previous game was ($30 instead of $50).
So as you can see there's nothing to worry about.
The DLC isn't bad either: for half the price of the main game (and even less with the seasons pass) you get 6 courses with almost as much holes as the main game (108) and 3 additional characters (3 packs) and with the seasons pass you get one bonus character (Golden Mario) early - which will become available to everyone after the last pack is released.
They even released a demo for the game to try it out..
So don't worry, Nintendo isn't like those other companies.

It does not matter when or how I sell it to you, you bought them both in all cases. Now if the apple and orange are rotten or not, and if they taste delicious or just good, and if they are overpriced or a bargain, that's a whole different story..
The fact that you _feel_ the apple _seems_ less worth the price you paid because you later discover you got an orange locked in a box with it, is purely a subjective emotion really..
