@@RonGersteinAt 10:53, the host uses the phrase "ex-airline stewardesses and hostesses." That was the accepted terminology in 1970. There were no male "flight attendants" on U.S. commercial airlines at that time. The stewardesses were required to be young, slim, attractive, personable, and single. Sigh.
1st contestant - Wally should have simply said "He deals in a product" and just let it go at that. But many times he just couldn't help but give away Too Much Info... as if somehow the panel were just not able to come up with the right questions on their own.. so he'd kindly help them along.
Granted, John Daly seemed to be helping the contestants rather than the panel. But one of the changes the show made in moving from network to syndication was to speed up the game so that there would be time for interviews or demonstrations involving the contestants and/or the panel. (Also, there were six minutes of commercials on the syndicated show as opposed to three on the network version.) To do this, the host (Bruner or Blyden) would give broader clues than Daly's "Mr. Thompson is self-employed and deals in a product." The panel would thus get to the heart of the game right away.
I love Joanna and Arlene’s outfits- very ‘70’s, granted, but still very sharp! Gene, once again, had to have been drunk! And it looked like Wally was starting to develop health issues here. He later suffered a heart attack and was one of the first American recipients of a heart transplant. And to me, Burgess Meredith will always be The Penguin and be known for his classic appearances on “The Twilight Zone”!
Mr Match Game can certainly handle his bike ! I thought for moment he would run into Bruner's desk. And of the Dorian Gray of game shows ladies Arlene Francis. She was 62 ?
It was the rules of WML that the moderator answers for the contestants to provide the most accurate response to the panelists' questions when the conestant is hesitant.
Often times a contestant would deal in some way with some big event around the the time of the show. Christmas often had department store Santa's, etc. Opening of baseball season would have a well known player/manager, etc. They knew who/what was in the news and make a guess.
Arlene had been with the show for many many many years, and she was always considered to be one of the brightest of them all. I've watched the old shows and she knows what to ask. I also believe her son graduated from Harvard. Actually, I'm sure of it, because he was on the show with another panelist, Bennett Serf who's son was also at Harvard at the time.
@@FlavioGirl Thank you for the well wishes. He died in 1983 of colon cancer at the age of 44. I was able to track this episode down with the help of the production company. I have the original confirmation letter mailed to my father from "Whats My Line" confirming his attendance and containing the production details. This helped me (Freemantle media) track the episode down. Freemantle was incredibly gracious in their efforts to find this for me. Also have an actual "Oscar" he was given by Dodge Trophies when he departed the company. My mother and father were both able to attend the 1969 Academy Awards Presentation as well. My father was able to meet his childhood film hero John Wayne as he received is first and only Oscar. I was able to present the episode to my three sisters as a gift a couple of years ago. We had not seen nor heard our fathers voice for over 30 years. He was an exceptional father albeit a short time. We were ages 23, 21, 19 and 11 when he passed.
"What nationality do you play in this picture?" "I play an Oriental." Oh. Meh. Gerrrrrd. Cultural APPROPRIATION!! I call for boycotts on What's my Line until Burgess Meredith apologizes for marginalizing an entire race and performing in yellow face.
Soupy seems stunned that Arlene guessed the Oscar maker so quick .
Joanna Barnes will always be remembered for her role as the silly and obnoxiously affected Gloria Upson in the movie Auntie Mame (1958).
Also for the fortune hunter in the first Parent Trap!
And the mother of the fortune hunter in the remake. RIP Aunt Vicky ❤
What's wrong with Muriel Puce?
It was ghastly…
@@paytonkane2501 Just ghastly.
I remember Burgess Meredith mostly from his work on television.
He made a lot of movies in his younger days😊
Thanks for uploading this one complete with VTR slate. Great panel on this episode
My Pleasure
Greg Thompson Studio Master copy?
19:26 Mystery Guest: Burgess Meredith a.k.a. the Penguin on Batman.
Linda the airline stewardess floating in the life jacket was as cute as a bunny.🐇
Flight attendant, not stewardess

I loved Burgess Meredith as The Penguin.
I thought Danny Devito was the Penguin.

The airdate is September 24, 1970
Taped the day after the first Earth Day (April 22, 1970). Aired the following September

The host gave away they first one
I didn't find him to be good host
Panel: Soupy Sales, Joanna Barnes, Gene Rayburn & Arlene Francis. Johnny Olson is the announcer.
I think that Joanna Barnes is top drawer and Bunny Bixler would approve! (I think I am remembering that name from Auntie Mame correctly...)
Joanna Barnes was very beautiful!
Gene Rayburn was a very tall man... I had never noticed it before.
Burgess Meredith don’t look too bad. I guess this is between Batman and Rocky.
You're right. This is post-Penguin, pre-Mickey
Wally Bruner ruined this show, I mean he answered for the contestants.
It was the rules of WML that the moderator answers for the contestants to provide the most accurate response to the panelists' questions when the conestant is hesitant.
The first guest... how the hell did she get his line so quick??
She knew... and I'm in past shows many of the panel knew in advance.

I don't believe that...
I don’t think any on this show is still alive today in 2018.
Joanna Barnes is still alive in 2019.
To add to that, she died in April 2022.
The First Earth Day
Did John Daly make an appearance or two on the newer show? Would have been nice!
He never did. But he (along with Arlene Francis) did host a special honoring the 25th anniversary of the original WML show.
No. He claimed that the syndicated version lacked the style and sophistication of the earlier series.

Wow, this show really went downhill from it's earlier years.
Uhm, I'd rather see a commercial than a black back ground. Hrrrr
I love the commercials! ❤
Burgess Meredith-- Yet another WML celeb narcissist who wouldn't disguise his voice in fear of not being recognized,
But he did try to disguise his voice.
Wally Bruner is a disgrace to John Daly.

Scott LaMont I seriously hope you are kidding.
Chris Lang Yes, I am.
@@chrislang9442 Of course he is, and his comment is SOOOOOOO appropriate for todays standards, if we have any that is.
Amen!
In 1970, it was perfectly acceptable to use the word "oriental" to refer to an Asian.
