- I’m determined to make this Osprey work. This kit is not where I want it to be, but it’s getting close!
I’m going stoveless, but can add an Esbit Fuel tab stove/fuel for a few ounces:

UL or not, it doesn’t matter. Just be happy on the trail and try to be efficient with what you carry 🤘
İ can't do stoveless, need my coffee in the morning. That tarp is pretty sweet!! Nice UL kit!
Lolobeans! Good to hear from you! 😀A stove may sneak in here..we will see!
Nice loadout
Thanks for watching!
I like your philosophy man. I am also not willing (or able) to fork out for the best of the best. But. I still do in fact buy premium gear. People often ask me how I afford all the nice equipment I have, and the the answer is simply that I buy practically everything second hand. There are bargains to be had literally everywhere to the point where I probably won't buy new hiking clothes or gear new ever again. Ultralight is a philosophy for thinking critically about what you carry for the specific conditions you will find yourself in, and you take the lightest / most simple stuff that gets the job done. Anything after that is just gram hunting for small gains often at very large price points. And that's not my vibe
Amen! I’d say at least 1/2 my kit is used - even my Altras! $60 bucks, barely worn. Like you said, the deals are OUT THERE. You just gotta be flexible with your needs and keep your eyes peeled. $60 bucks for that Osprey was a steal and exactly what I was looking for. And I love that you mentioned simplicity. That’s one of my biggest backpacking philosophies. How can I accomplish my trip in the easiest and most fluid way possible? Hence the no stove approach. It’s just another step (or series of steps) that’s easily eliminated. Thanks for your comment - it’s nice to meet someone with similar approaches to backpacking!
@@natehikes haha exactly. finding a good used deal is like crack cocaine 😆. I also have various Hokas and Altras I bought used. Throw in a new insole and you're good to go. Once the tread wears out? Cool now I have new road shoes 😄. I take pride in using my gear to the point where it literally is starting to fall into pieces,.and repair where absolutely possible. Spend that saved money on booking trips! I'm not quite there with the cold soaking. I'm normally just do a simple couscous pesto mix with some dried sausage. doesn't use much gas. For breakfast I bring dried milk and have muesli 😅. So yeah still fairly simple. I think simplicity is easily one of the biggest determining factors in my gear / food / clothing choices. Where I live in the Swedish mountains it can get pretty windy, and people being these potentially "bomber" tents that weigh like 3kg, yet are so complex to set up, with so many poles and then the tent is flapping like nuts as they're setting it up increasing risk for damage. I can set my Trailstar or my Duomid up in less than 2mins with almost zero risk of failure in challenging weather, and all for less than a kilo.. simplicity man, simplicity.
@northernswedenstories1028 my biggest complication is the tarp obviously. It can be such a bear finding the proper site. Thought about adding a bathtub, but way too complicated at that point and might as well get a tent. This kit is getting close but it’s not there. That’s what I love about backpacking. So many way to do it and explore. Peace, my friend. Never stop chasing the “used gear high” 🤣
Marmot EVODry Torrey is my go-to rain jacket here in Alaska. Keeps me dry in cold/rainy weather & the pit zips are the best if I need to quickly regulate my temperature.
I’ve had luck with Marmot Precip in the past so I’ll look into it. THANKS for the suggestion! 🤘
No problem. If you’re able to find it, will probably be a lot cheaper than when it first came out (was around $250).
Features
2.5-layer Marmot MemBrain Eco fabric offers 20,000 mm/15,000 g waterproof/breathable protection
Marmot makes materials for the EVODry collection using processes that reduce environmental impact without compromising fabric functionality
PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish and full seam taping add extra weather protection
Heat-releasing pit zips improve airflow and help regulate body temperature if you work up a sweat
Helmet-compatible hood with peripheral cord adjustment
Hand pockets with water-resistant zippers; chest pockets with zippers and flaps
Articulated elbows make it easy to move even when layered up
Water-resistant center-front zipper
Adjustable drawcord hem and adjustable VELCRO® cuffs help seal out the weather
Research done 🤣
Thank you thank you thank you! This is exactly WHY I started this channel. To teach AND learn from others. Your input is super helpful and I hope to see you again on other vids 💚 I’ll be looking into this jacket.
@@natehikes😎🙌🏼
The Montbell Versalite rain jacket is OP and UL.
I need to get more familiar with Montbell. I know they have some nice UL stuff but I’m not well versed in their products. Appreciate the insight and I’ll look into it 🤘
@@natehikes research these: montbell versalite, montbell storm cruiser for rain jackets, montbell versalite for rain pants, montbell ex light wind jacket or montbell tachyon for windbtrakers, montbell UL trekking umbrella, montbell cool hoodie for sun hoodies, montbell plasma 1000 down jacket, montbell light down pants. Actually it’s hard to find a bad product from them. They dont have any polartec alpha in their repertoire, that’s their only shortcoming. At least they dont have this yet
@romidumitrescu I’ve seen several of these pieces on YT, but that’s about it. I MAY be straying away from a UL rain jacket - we will see. I will def check it out the rest. Never knew they made a sun hoodie! Thanks for the tips - Super appreciated 🤘
I always have used the Columbia Outdry Extreme rain jackets. Never failed me and actually waterproof.
P.S. That MH Airmesh hoodie is sweet. I have 2 of them. 👍
Appreciate the tip! I have a couple air meshes and love ‘em too. I like your style 😎
Do you use the air mesh for a base layer? I’ve done it in the winter and they work great!
I like your UL setup, but, for me, it would be inadequate, even though the base weight is so low. This loadout you've created is perfect for a very specific set of conditions, outside of which you will probably find yourself very uncomfortable when and if you encounter any of several problems that are frequently an issue while hiking/backpacking. Thanks for the video, though! It's always interesting to see what's possible when you're really going for ultralight!!!
Load-outs are very person specific. Kinda like telling you what my favorite food is - we’ll have our opinions but won’t agree. I will say that this setup is conditional - meaning it should change based on your trip and needs. Thanks for watching!
Why are you growing to hate the Thermarest vesper? I wan really considering getting that quilt.
Not a fan of the horizontal baffling on the torso. Way too many cold spots. I have about 20 nights in this quilt and it suffers the same issue over and over. But take what I say with salt, as I got it used (maybe the last owner stored it compressed). I know the weight is temping with the Vesper - that’s what sold me. But overall for the cost, you’d be better going cottage imo.
If you go to REI - read some of the reviews on the Vesper. Seems to be a common complaint.
thank you this is good advise! I will definitely change my scope and do some more research
Checkout the Enigma by Enlightened Equipment. I personally have been looking at Katabatic Gears Sawatch Quilt, although I haven’t done much research on it yet (FYI)
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Sub & 👍14

By the way - Your support for the channel is above and beyond. THANK YOU for doing so and I hope you continue to enjoy the Nate Hikes content 💚
it looks like there wouldn’t be any room in your pack for food with it all packed up how you had it in the video
It’s a good point actually because it does appear that way. But no - There is PLENTY of space for food! Loosen up some compression straps and the brain, and you’re good to go.
Funny thing is - I had even more space but started packing my bag a little inefficiently as it was too much. I really should be using a smaller pack to be honest.
