I think I would take the six cylinder even though it makes less power if I absolutely had to get a base model mustang or Camaro for that matter. At least it would sound slightly better. But I sure as hell would not put a loud exhaust on it either way. I've heard a turbo mustang with the more basic exhaust on it, and it sounds better than this You can hear a little bit of turbo whistle but that's about it. I think this car might have a special exhaust on it it had quad outputs on the back I don't think that's what you get in the more base model turbo 4. Other than the exhaust sound it certainly is quick enough.

I drove an Ecoboost convertible rental car this summer. It's a lot of fun. And it has a surprising amount of get up and go for a 4 cylinder. But you're right, that 10 speed auto transmission is all over the place. I'm sure it's all for gas mileage and the low 0-60 time, but it's a bit of a pain in the ass to drive on a daily basis in town because it doesn't downshift fast enough. You have to use the paddles to get it to do what you want it to do.

  • @DRayHurst
    @DRayHurst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Thank you for the drive. I appreciate it.
First the transmission. This car with auto tranny was mainly designed for daily drive and fuel efficiency in mind. I'm not surprised one bit that it isn't that great in sport mode. If you're in sport mode and blasting back roads, this car should be in manual using the paddle shifters for performance driving.
I guarantee that you can shift the car much better than it can shift itself when burning back roads. I owned a MB SLC300, 4 cyl, auto. and it's basically the same type of setup. In manual mode I could hold gears around corners and shift myself on the straights much better than the car could do it itself., for highway driving leave it in comfort or normal and let it do its thing.
2nd is the sound. the 4 cyl gives the driver and passenger decent thrill without alerting every cop within a mile of your presence which is great for tooling back roads.
3rd is the engine.. holy shit does this car freakin fly, 20 yrs ago a 4 cyl couldn't get out of its own way and now look at what Ford has done, very freakin fast pony car, it flat out hauls ass and handles like a dream. I'm not saying it's better than a GT, I'm saying it serves a role. It's for owning back roads on a weekend morning or daily driving to work without breaking the bank or losing your license. If you have a half hour commute or longer there's a good chance you drive partial highway and the rest back road. This car gives you the ability to have some fun every day on the way to and from work and then mash back roads on the weekend.
I'd take one in convertible and put it through it's paces every day but I wouldn't buy it new, let someone else take the depreciation hit and get one still under warranty. Great car, thanx for the vid

The High performance pack is a rip off and here are the reasons why
    1. It weighs in at 3638lbs the gt is only 67lbs more at 3705 lbs if you got a base ecoboost it weighs 3532lbs which is a 106lbs difference
    2. You can get a base gt with the performance pack for the same price or less. And the fact you could get a base ecoboost for 25k in some places means you could do about 17k worth of mods and be a lot faster over all.
    3. The gas mileage it gets isn’t much better than a gt

its not a rip off, i just bought the HPP Ecoboost mustang wih the 6 speed in january for 32k, i just dont have the handling package. 0-60 in 4,6-4.7 seconds, vs 5.3-5.4 in the regular ecoboost. plus the HPP ecoboost has the same governed top speed of 155 as the GT. the regular ecoboost doesnt. im very happy with my decision in what i bought, driving the regular ecoboost for a while, (brother has one) than driving the HPP one i can definetly feel the difference. i didnt need the V8 nor needed it and absoltely love my mustang, i could care less what anyone thinks.

Yeah I agree, and you can may 4-cylinder engines sound good. They do this in motorcycles. You can do what they call a cross-plane crank. Changes the firing order and has a much deeper rumble they actually sound a bit like a V8. You can look at the Yamaha r1. some years of that had a cross plane crank and they sound absolutely fantastic.
Triumph does a good job with three cylinder engines using the same trick. Pick a better firing order and you get a much better exhaust note.

Recently watched 2 reviews of this car (obviously 2 different press cars based on color and interior options) and they were both automatics - get your head out Ford. You can have one manual in the press fleet...
Those criticizing this car don't really realize that the Challenger is more or less the last "MUSCLE CAR" while the Mustang and Camaro are essentially sports cars. This HPP EcoBoost would be a blast on a winding back road (with the manual) but obviously wasn't designed to win drag races.
If you add the HPP to a base EcoBoost coupe and don't go crazy with the options this isn't a bad value. It would still spank most of the cars I lusted after during my misspent youth of the late 80s - early 90s.

The manual in the new gen mustangs is absolute dogwater (I've driven/owned two)
It's an unreliable, muddy trans and the 10 speed is by far the better option. Even on back roads the 10 speed is a perfect choice compared to the manual. So trust me, they don't want the grenade of a manual transmission that the mustang has in their press car fleet

Ok, so having been driving these cars for a few years now. If you put your foot down, dont immediately back off, the transmission in normal is going to shift to the highest gear possible bc that is the fuel efficient mode. with sport mode the car thinks you are actually going to be hammer down so it forces the transmission to shift down quicker and shift into lower gears more. all of your problems with the transmission would be fixed by keeping your foot down, not accelerating 3 mph at max throttle then letting off. other than that yes the GT is more fun, this car is if you want great fuel econ while you blast through back roads. these 4 cylinders are super fun if you know how to open them up and not be afraid of them.

Add the Magneride and handling package on the EcoBoost and go head to head on the track vs. the GT and it's 2.4 seconds faster on the track in the test I saw, and both have 155 mph top speeds from the factory so you're not giving all that much up with the EcoBoost, and with a tune and a few upgrades it will walk the stock GT
