Oh man I miss the Wings program. I LOVED this show, and especially the narrator. Also watching this re-confirms a theory I developed in the late 90s - that all of these programs, and even some later ones on the History channel, revolved around Francis Gary Powers and his U-2 flight. I feel like I got to know that mission intimately over the years.

I don't know if it's just me, but Peter Ustinovs narrative style is very similar to Laurence Olivier's in The World at War. On an aside, having the read comments I was expecting to hate this documentary. Actually it's very good. It's quite interesting seeing the different aircraft produced by the US and USSR. Given their resources, it is amazing how impressive some of the aircraft the Soviet Union produced are. The F15 may have been overkill for the Mig 25, but it wasn't for the Mig 29 or SU 27

The “self destruct” button the narrator mentions around 8:50 when he says “the g force was too much and Powers couldn’t hit the button so he had to eject” that does not mean the U-2 was equipped with a device that could destroy the entire plane. That would’ve been an immense system and added way too much unnecessary weight that Lockheed was already worried about which is why the early U2 planes weren’t even painted was to conserve weight. There was however a button to hit that would self destruct the camera and film when hit but Lockheed already knew when or if a U2 was ever downed it would remain largely intact & they were right bc Powers’s plane was largely intact & intact everything in the cockpit including all of his personal belongings, survival kit which included gold coins & watches for bartering release if ever downed behind enemy lines during a conflict & captured, along with Powers’s personal diary. Had Powers been able to hit the self destruct button for the camera & film it’s likely this wouldn’t of even been a noticeable incident as there would be literally nothing on the plane since it was never an armed plane & the camera was the only part that would indicate it as a spy plane so had he been able to hit that button it was believed by Kelly Johnson, the engineers at Skunk Works, The USAF brass, & Powers himself that the Soviets would’ve simply found an unarmed plane with zero weapons or attachments and Powers wouldn’t of been paraded as a prisoner and it wouldn’t of been an international incident. Although Powers was treated exceptionally well by the Soviets having never ever been abused, forced to talk about anything (he didn’t know anything) the Soviets had all they needed in the plane itself, & in fact he spent his time sewing Soviet era rugs, was fed great, treated great by soviet guards & in his own words “had some of the best damn vodka he’s ever had in his life” The Movie “Bridge of Spies” took parts of the story above & beyond as Hollywood always tends to do especially the “cyanide” capsules & the whole “you tell them nothing” part. They were given capsules but it was never told to them how the movie portrayed it. That capsule was a LAST RESORT of having been a prisoner and only to be used if the prisoner favored death over whatever means of interrogation or torture he was subject to. There was also a pin where they could scratch the skin & death would be caused by pufferfish toxin but they only made 1 I believe & Powers did not ever receive or carry one. This was not his “first flight” he was a very accomplished U2 pilot contrary to the myths. If you wanna know anything more about Powers feel free to ask I’m likely 1 of the best sources you’ll come across. How is that? FGP is my Great Uncle

Hes the pilot that put a Cessna into power lines and hung upside down in 18,000 volt lines near the airport. This plane was taken apart and crated and sent back in tool boxes. Amazing amount of steel in the Mig25 that was rusty.

I'm not saying that it's the case, but the A-5 Vigilante held the world altitude record for 13 years until the record was broken by the Soviets. Namely, a *MiG-25* broke the record.

Notice the wingtip fins, which were later deleted? It took a looooooooonnnnngggg runway. And it doesn't resemble the B-70 at all. It actually resembles the F-15 Eagle the most. Soviets didn't allow independent pilot action. All was ground controlled. Interception and permission to launch weapons. Though Western pilots are still mostly restricted to permission to launch, except during combat.

39:03 Woah, woah, woah there Peter Ustinov.. The F-14 had the Link 4C fighter-to-fighter datalink. Almost exactly what is described here. It allowed them to cooperate and coordinate attacks with their Phoenix missiles and the maximum detection range of the AWG-9 radar wasn't even attainable unless they had more than one aircraft working together over Link 4C. And I'm also pretty sure by the time the MiG-31 was around in numbers Link 16 was at least on the horizon, so I call bullshit in the most strenuous terms.

    • @HrHaakon
      @HrHaakon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, when the F-14 flew it was common that not all radars worked, so they had to have datalink to function.

The radar and missiles of the Foxhound were the downfall of the Blackbird. The plane couldn't do much better than the MiG-25, but it was more maneuverable, plus the radar was much more capable, and it's missiles were basically copies of the Phoenix carried by the F-14, and could have taken out a Blackbird. They did numerous intercepts of Blackbirds over the years, and basically caused the SR-71 to be taken out of service. The Foxhound couldn't catch a Blackbird, but it's missiles could. It was kind of an F-15 with F-14 missiles... Have a great day!

The section on the radar was removed. I have it on my VHS recording. The section is about how the radar was the first phased array radar in a fighter aircraft. That it had longer range then the F-14 radar. And that the F-14 Radar was not fully electronically scanned.

Wings of the Red Star. I have episodes on VHS. I have this episode on VHS. It sticks when it plays due to the tape having degraded. It's Sir Peter Ustinov narrating. Look when he died. Made in 1993. However, both programmes did use some of the same stock soviet film footage.

I LOVE WATCHING THESE! IM SO FASCINATED BY WHAT THE SOVIETS WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE!
WHEN THEY PUT THEIR MIND TO SOMTHING ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS! THEY DONT TAKE "NO" AS AN OPTION AND "FAILURE" IS A DEATH SENTENCE!
BUT I GOTTA SAY I REALLY ADMIRE THEIR WORK ETHIC AND THEM BEING ABLE TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.
ALSO THEY ALWAYS OVER ENGINEER FOR 💪 STRENGTH AND BUILT THEM "ON TIME" & "UNDER BUDGET" UNLIKE US HEAR IN THE USA 🇺🇸 WE TEND TO BUILT OUR PLANES LIKE SWISS WATCHES THAT MAKES THEM SENSITIVE AND TOO MANY COMPUTERS THAT CAN FAIL OR TAKE THEM OFF THE READINESS LIST.
THE RUSSIANS ONLY NEED A SLEDGEHAMMER AND SCREWDRIVER TO WORK ON THEIR PLANES ....AND US WE NEED MAGNIFYING GLASS THERMOMETER'S & A "FINE TOOTH" COMB AND MAYBE YOU'LL FIX IT OR MAYBE NOT AND ONLY IF YOU HAVE "50" JET AIRCRAFT MECHANICS TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM!

When the Soviet Pilot, Viktor Belenko, flew his Mig-25 into our hands we almost thought it was a ruse. The patch work of "duct tape and machine screws" that held the Foxbat together made it a Joke in the West. Shoddy repairs should have been expected because the USSR was almost bankrupt and did what they had to do on a very limited budget. The West didn't prevail over the USSR and their Bloc because we were superior, but prevailed because our Defense Budgets were just an impossible dream to the sickly Economy of the Soviets and their allies. We simply outspent them at every turn. The US Defense Budget wasted more money than the entire USSR Defense Budget had in total. I sort of felt bad for them even though I worked for the DoD for over 35 years. Their attempt to equal the US Military on a shoestring budget was an embarrassment to the whole "Communist Dream". It always comes down to MONEY in this World. The Mig-25 truly was a World Class plane IF you can afford to maintain and fly the darned thing as intended.

The story was a bit different. Due to the superb flight performance, the west expected the Mig-25 to be a super expensive and complex aircraft. When they got their hands on it, they were shocked of the simplicity. Because they did not think would be possible to construct such an aircraft that simple and capable to be mass produced.
Soviet engineers simply outclassed the west in that regard.

+randy109 They weren't quite on a shoestring budget. That's why the civilian population suffered, as there was no priority for building a mass consumption economy.
Their economy would peak at ~50% the GDP per capita vs. the USA/west and at about 1/3 at its worst (excluding the end of WWII)
And the regime made absolutely no difference, be it feudalism, agro-capitalism, centralized planned economy, putin-ist resource economy,. Russia's been trying to catch up since Peter the Great.
