    Cute idea! I think your tool is called a tracing wheel. They used to sell colored paper like carbon paper. You would roll it on the back side of the. Paper & it puts colored dots onto the fabric. Not really intended to create holes but an interesting way to use the tool.

      Thank you! And thanks for watching! Yes, I remember my mom using the carbon paper but I was too young to even know what she was doing. Haha!

    Just a suggestion. I put the square of fabric in each circle, sewed two diagonal lines and then put everything together. That way you aren’t wrestling with the whole quilt doing that step. I also put a square of batting too.

      +Patty Davis Oh fantastic! This is great option for those jeans. Plus you can make it super scrappy or not, it's completely up to you. :) Have fun!

    I made three of this quilt two years ago for my three adult sons in the five weeks before Christmas. I used my late husband's jeans and scraps of dress shirts left over from my first bed size memory quilt for my bed. Needless to say they were quite surprised and happy with their very own memory quilt. Each quilt was 100 circles/blocks. I did use the OLFA Rotary compass cutter which went a lot faster than using something circular and having to mark on the fabric. I also sewed the circles into rows and then connected the rows; I then used washable school glue sticks to hold the inside squares and flaps in place so that I could sew without pins. (That is like a little bit of cheating, but it worked for me, being so pressed for time.) I used a straight stitch on each flap about 3/8 inch in from the edge and snipped each edge to make it fray more. After watching this video, I find that the zig-zag looks really cool too.

      Oh that's wonderful! What great Christmas presents. :) The glue is a great idea. I wish I had thought about that. Nothing like sticking yourself with a needle while rearranging the quilt on the machine. Hahaha.

    I just found your video and read through some comments. Thank you for sharing your process. I agree with a few that sewing them in strips would help simplify it. Also, the wheel thing you are using to mark is an old tracing wheel, used with tracing paper to mark fabric under patterns. Glad I watched this.

    I have made one of these before and I love it, someday I want to made another one. My tip would be to make half and finish it, then make the other half then sew the 2 halves together so there's not so much bulk in the middle. FYI, those are pins not needles.

      Thank you. Oh well welcome to the hobby. Hobby? More like passion! Hahaha. Yea, plus with this it's completely unique. No other quilt in the world is the same! :D And you can do so much with it. I've seen them done using red bandanas for the insert or even white lacey fabric. Both look wonderful and both have a cowboy/southern feel. This is a good example here of the bandana fabric: www.pinterest.com/pin/81768549462585711/ This is the lace one: www.pinterest.com/pin/109634572153561227/

    You will have a nice stitch pattern on the underside of your circles when it is finishedby sewing the "wings" or "pedals" down. The little tool is called a "tracing wheel" it has been used with tracing paper sandwiched between the material and pattern paper . The wheel tool then traveled over along the the lines on the pattern paper=leaving the carbon paper "Ink" marks for sewing and or cutting. Thanks for your video!

  • @dorissimmons571

    I sewed my row together then added the rows together as it seemed easier. I also used glue stick that held my square material in place before sewing around circles. I clipped my circles to fray but next one I would just do a fancy stitch around.

    If you sew your whole next row of circles together first then iron the sides down THEN sew your row together to the quilt, it will be lots easier to do rather than trying to sew the little sides after you have them already on the main part of the quilt.

    I have made a lot of jean quilts. But never a circle. I think i will try this with using T-Shirt prints for the inserts. I was going to make one side with t-shirts from the school my grandkids go to but I might try this instead just using the logo's they have on their t-shirts if I can make it come out right or get enough of the t-shirt info per square.

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have my Grandma's tracing wheel, must be at least a hundred years old and still going strong. She used it for Burda patterns and so did my Mum. You can use very light batting if needed but it is heavy already and does not need it really xxx

      +Lise Labelle Thank you! Oh yea, that's a great idea! I bet sewing through leather is a challenge though...? Ah yes, the black and white one in the background is the first jelly roll quilt I ever did. I did it in 2012. And I'm sad to say, I've still not completed it. Lol! It's a UFO. But, I used a whole jelly roll and I cut the stripes into smaller sizes. I'll have to measure them when I get home as I don't remember the measurements. :/ Then I added solid black stripes between each row. I thought about adding red applique flowers in one corner as a statement piece. I haven't done that yet though. Lol. Your English looks good to me! No worries. Well thank you! And thank you for watching. :)

    I have twelve pair of old jeans that my husband outgrew. This is so interesting. Do you cut your squared printed the size of the inside square of the jean? And what is the size or the square? Not sure my question makes sense. In other words if the circle is 9" what size did you make the marked square?

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's perfect! That's plenty of jean fabric for sure. :) The measurement for the square inside the circle is 2 inches smaller than your circle. So if you cut out a 7 inch circle (fold the circle in half and measure the length of the fold) your square will be 5 inches. Make sure to do a sample first! The sample will ensure you like the way they fit together before spending time cutting everything out only to find it doesn't look right. For a 9 inch circle you will need a 7 inch square.

  • @readGodsword

    Very nice job!! I really like the effect. What size squares did you cut the colored fabric? Thanks

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I believe they ended up being 5 inches....possibly 4.5. But you can make them be any size you like. Pretty much they need to be 2 inches smaller than you circles are wide. So if you have circles that are 9 inches at their widest, your squares should be about 7 inches. That allows you to have a one inch flap on each side. This could vary of course so go with what works best for your circles.

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I made this video, my primary machine for this quilt was a Brother Runway edition. It allowed me to do the zigzag stitches. But, for straight stitches I currently use a Juki DDL-8700. It's an industrial machine that comes built into it's own table. It does 5500 stitches a minute!! :O I bought it from Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005I5DI56/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  • @itsastitchup
    @itsastitchup 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    And plus I am thinking of buying a Juki 2010Q, which is how I came across your channel in the first place. Having had it for sometime now, what are your thoughts on the machine. They cost twice as much here in Australia and then you have to freight to a regional centre. How does it perform with long sessions of free motion quilting?

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that's great. It's a wonderful machine. I love it honestly. The only time I ever had trouble with it was when I tried using some thread that was about 153 years old. Lol. It wouldn't come off the spool smoothly which really upset my machine. Once I changed threads, it was back to normal. Oh wow, I had no idea it cost more over there. But I suppose that makes sense. It's great with long or short sessions. If you're using it for several hours a day, you want to make sure to give a drop of oil in all the oil holes. And of course have several bobbins loaded and ready to go. :) There is no alert when your bobbin thread is running low so you must pay attention. The other day I was in the zone and sewing a 70 inch long seam. My bobbin ran out about 18 inches in and I didn't notice until I got to the end. Lol! But that was my fault for not paying attention.

    The little tool your using, we used in home ec class in high school to go thru the carbon paper to show the lines for pleats etc................I did not hear what size square you start with , is there a calculation to use if you want to have the center be specific, I have a lot of charm packs, 5 inch squares that would work great..?

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember my mom doing the same thing. Of course I had no interest in sewing at the time so it went in one ear and right out the other. Hahaha. I think for the 5 inch squares, you'll need a circle that is about 7 inches. It's been a while since I did that quilt so I don't really remember the circle size. I'm sorry!

    Does the circle have to be 2” bigger than the square or can it be just 1” bigger 😊

    • @SegoviaQuilts
      @SegoviaQuilts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It needs to be 2 inches bigger. The reason is when you fold the "edges" of the circle in and over the square, if it's only 1 inch bigger, you won't cover all the edges of the square. If the circle is only 1 total inch bigger than the square, each "edge" of the circle will only measure .5 inch. Not nearly enough to cover all the edges of the square. I hope this makes sense.
