I lost my daughter last year. She left three young children. I’m making this quilt for her 15 year old son out of her jeans. I’m going to put a picture of the two of them together on one of the squares. I’ll also use some of the back pockets for a square and a pair of bright green jeans she had for the 5” squares. I’ve had several boxes of her clothes for this last year and only now can bear to handle them. This has been very therapeutic for me. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea!
I too, lost my dear heart 3 months ago. I cut up two of his large, soft, flannel robes for the backing and was planning on sweatshirts for the front of my memory quilt. But I was stuck in my mind due to not enough sweatshirts and too manty t-shirts. Plus - I LOVE to use old denim and he has many jeans still in his side of the closet. So Laura - thank you, so Love the ragged look anyway. You have shown me how to incorporate the sweatshirt and t-shirt pieces onto the denim and then backing with the robe fabric. PERFECT! Thank you so much. And - your quilt is just lovely Laura! As for the gals below in the same situation...it takes time. I have the 'wisdom' prayer on my wall; I say it every nite; "God grant me the serenity to accept....the courage to change...the wisdom to know the difference". Maybe that will sink into my subconscious and guide me thru my new - very 'different' life now...with all its echoes and sometimes ghostly shadows. Hugs to you all. Danielle Simone
Thanks so much for making this quilt. It has really inspired me to make a memory quilt. I lost my husband in December and though I've given my sons some of his jeans - I still have a lot and lots of shirts (including Hawaiian), flannel pj bottoms and tshirts. It's been very difficult to want to let go of those things and to be honest, my house looks pretty much like it was when he passed - but I'm starting to go through it. (I'm not wishing to illicit any sympathy here - so please don't - I'm doing ok). Mine won't be as uniform as yours but I think it will be a way to keep his memory alive!
sadiejosiemom im so sorry for your loss, just think when you cuddle in it for warmth it will be like he's hugging you and giving you comfort. May God grant you peace take care.

Laura, I have never been a quilter, but the way you explain/teach is so easy to understand, I am thinking of trying at my age (71). If nothing else, your instruction is so easy to understand, I love watching and will continue. If I do try quilting, I may try a small lap quilt first.
I made a regular style of jeans quilt for my son. He LOVED it and asked me when I would make him another one. I have been trying to think of a way to make a different type of pattern for another jeans quilt for him. You must have been reading my mind. Every thing about this quilt is wonderful. I have made a couple of jean quilts and this is another one I'll be trying! I even put in the squares that have stains like oil in the quilt as it tells the story of well worn, loved jeans!
Wow! This is perfect way to use all my thrift store old jeans and my bounty of fun flannel and equally fun cotton quilting fabrics! This will be a fun easy sewing project to do with my grandchildren. I really like the size of the finished quilt. I especially the suggesting for threading the serger I going to use her recommended colors for surging the blocks together. I'm thinking of using a raw edge denim binding to complete the warn look. I can't hardly wait to get this going! Thanks again for your awesome tutorials!
If you want to use this for a picnic quilt, I would recommend NOT using flannel on the backing. Grass and debris really sticks to it. I thought of that half way thru the finished quilt, but I DO love it.

I love it! I would never have thought to serge the edges, usually when the seams are left on the front it's so they can fray. These won't fray, but using the serger sure would make it easier to assemble this! Thanks heaps for the great idea.
Good idea for a bed quilt especially for young lad. I've made a few very similar for picnic blankets which are also great and the benefit is that the extra stain here and there just blend in and make for a very authentic look.

Love this tutorial. I wanted verity on back, so I went to goodwill and got old flannel pajama pants. Thought about using bandana material instead of charm squares but decided to use my scraps instead. Also made mine twin size. Reminds me of the one my grandma made.
I assume the width of the 2.5 yards of denim is about 60in. And the flannel would need to be an equivalent amount even though it usually comes in 45in width.

I love your tip about the triangular cardboard template so the smaller pieces can be used. Did you zig-zag all your seams and if you did were the flannel pieces still together like they were when you sewed the seam? Was this only just to prevent the seams from raveling?
Yes, the denim and the flannel was zig-zag together for a few reasons, it will help with the raveling, it keeps the fabric together as I was sewing, it made it easy to handle, and I liked the look :)
This is a great video! You have done a wonderful job with explaining it step by step! I would like to make it to fit a full size bed and I am wondering if adding more rows ( maybe go until I have 11 squares across) will give me a size that would fit a bed. Have you figured out the math for that? Thank you for the very clear instructions.
I have not figured out the math for that but you are definitely on the right track. Each side just needs to be equal and then your center row will put it together
I’ve never quilted but believe I can do this one. Great presentation. Only problem is, I’ve got to make it longer or else hubby’s toes will be sticking out - lol. Still believe I can do that too since it’s just squares and triangles. Great job!!
I watched this video you posted on making a jeans quilt. It is really pretty. You say you have 41 8 inch squares and 4 7 inch square cut in half for triangles at corners, 16 9 inch squares cut in half, flannel on the back and 41 5 inch squares of a swatch of cloth in the center of each block of the jeans. you said it will make a 53 inch square. I wanted to make this but I am making a quilt for a king size bed which is a lot larger. I know the dimensions will need to be different. Can you please help me and let me know what size triangles, squares and center cloth. I am curious, will I need larger squares and triangles or more rows with extra blocks. Please help. the triangle was made from paper. I just made my own. I also used a ruler that I had. It is a already a very heavy quilt, but you could add batting if you would like:)
stay with the 10" sq and then increase the number of squares on each side. As you sew the blocks together you will end up with 2 sides that look like two big triangles. see the time at 9:26 you have made 4 rows, this is where you will need to add more rows
If the right side of the denim is a bit stained, and the top side patch doesn't cover it enough, just flip it over and use the wrong side. Denim patchwork is very forgiving. :-)

Yes, the denim and the flannel was zig-zag together for a few reasons, it will help with the raveling, it keeps the fabric together as I was sewing, it made it easy to handle, and I liked the look :)

I used a cotton binding, just like a regular quilt :)

Sorry yes I just didn't remember the measurements as I was speaking to you. You basically are just More blocks and more rows

stay with the 10" sq and then increase the number of squares on each side. As you sew the blocks together you will end up with 2 sides that look like two big triangles. see the time at 9:26 you have made 4 rows, this is where you will need to add more rows

You can use whatever you like. My serger was set for about 1/2". Just keep the same seam allowance throughout

If the right side of the denim is a bit stained, and the top side patch doesn't cover it enough, just flip it over and use the wrong side. Denim patchwork is very forgiving. :-)
