Hi Del, James Cramer here. I haven't communicated a lot since your new build but after seeing the paint job on the rear fender mate....that is amazing. Considering it's your first try I think you nailed it. I think the thin line of black running on the inside of the black outer border has complimented the whole thing. I really hope you keep this colour and design. Love to you both x
Thank you James, good to hear from you again... yes, am happy with it so far, have re-done it since this video, just to narrow the silver band a little and get the proportions right... next video will be the other fender, see if I can get it the same! Thanks for your support mate, D&Px
Have say I loving the look del. sorry if I’m mistaken, is there a blemish in the paint work as you scan across the work with the old and new paint work I’d say just in the middle of the curve edge. time stamp 11:18
Lol sorry mate ok. Near the end of the vid, where you place it on the bench under your storage units. when you put the two arches one in front of the other you then pan across the newly painted one. As I said it in-perfection is midway, On the out side edge.look from time stamp 10:40 ( It’s problem might well be my eyes) 😂😂😂 All the best guys Paul.
@@paulelliott2861 Hi Paul, yeah looks a bit frayed at that point, but it was a sharp line to the naked eye, could have been the lacquer distorting the light or something, but as I've said in the newest video tonight, I've stripped that off anyway and done it again since as I'd made the silver section too wide... and it was too dominant, it only needed to be a stripe down the centre, so got that right now!
I'm not a harley guy but WOW I love that work on the fenders! Maybe a purple tint would be a good addition but thats only my view, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING I couldn't believe my eyes. Top job DB.
Excellent job mate, now you have just got to see how it looks on the bike. Love the board update, how true is that statement. Penny and you have a safe week. Cheers
Now that paint and clear coat on looks awesome. Wasn't sure at the start but dam that now looks fine. Clear coat has really made it pop. Super job del can't wait to see this bike finished.
Thanks buddy, still faffing about with it, ive re-coated the front fender again over the last few days, it has a narrower silver section now and looks better... and will be getting into the back fender tomorrow for Friday's video.. wish me luck, it aint over till the bike rumbles out the door..lol!
Hi Dell, I think the front fender looks great, I must admit I was not sure about the scuff effect but with the addition of the paint I think it looks fantastic. Nice idea. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it finished.
I must say I was very skeptical when I saw you removing original paint but after seeing the results of first paint job on front fender I must say it will look awesome on the bike. Good luck with the rest of the project. I have great pleasure in watching your work and how the whole final look of the bike unfolds.
Thank you J, that's very kind of you, this has been an experiment and a gamble from the start, and I've no idea what it'll look like on the bike... but we shall see! Thank you for your support always brother, chat soon, all the best, D&Px
I was really not sure :) .... but once the paint went on, looked great !! Think everyone is happy its not just the black spray again, different, nice job.
Looks awesome Del, should be ready just in time for when the clocks change to British summertime at the end of the month. Light evenings and warm weather, bike time! Whoop whoop.
I've painted a few bikes and always seem to have a groove where I taped it off. I thought about just putting the clear coat thicker on the low parts to fix the difference. Is there a trick to get it smooth or am I on the right track? BTW I like the paintjob.
Hi Michael, for my experience i find that the trick is to lay up as little thickness of the colour as you possibly can.. remember the bulk of the overall paint finish will be the clear coat... the base colour only needs to be the barest minimum, maybe one good coat so its block and no patches... then tape up and lay down your second colour... but make sure you only coat up the least amount possible to just make the colour block and no patches... then tape off, and lots of clear coat..... If you can get maybe 6 wet coats of clear, and let is cure and sink for a week... then block sand it back with 1500 grit, you will get a flat topcoat finish by taking off a layer of the clear that sits on top of the second colour to make that ridge you get.!!!! go careful and you shouldn't bust through the clear, and hopefully end up with a flawless job where you can't feel the join. .!!!! Good luck with is buddy.. Del.
omg del. I thought this was going to look alright but defo not my cup of tea but in all honesty I absolutely love it! looks amazing! really canny wait to see it on the bike! nice work champ!
Cheers Kevin, that's very kind mate... sometimes it's hard to vocalise your vision and sometimes it's just better if I just get on with it! Happy with it so far, but you're right, it needs to be seen on the bike to see the full effect!
Thanks Del, another informative video. Looks good. Question about the technique, probably a very basic punter question: you took off the masking tape while the paint was still wet, is this the advice? I'm guessing that if you wait till the paint has dried you run the risk of pulling the paint off where the tape meets the paint? It also looked like you put on the lacquer while the paint was still wet or at least tacky, is this also the advice? Thanks as ever. Regards, Adam
Hi Adam, right questions mate... firstly you guessed dead right on the tape, it's important to get the timing of the removing of the tape dead right, too soon and the paint is too wet, and it will run into the area you've taped off, but leave it too long, and if it dries the tape can peel off the paint you want to leave in place as it forms a skin..... you want the paint to be tacky and firm, but still durable... and I find generally, as long as it's not too thick (which it shouldn't be) about 15mins in a warm room is minimum, but no longer than 1/2hr....... With the lacquer, i treat that as the next material coat, so it bonds firmly to the existing black, either that or you have to let the black dry fully for 24hrs, then you may need to key it up with some scotchbrite, but if the black is still wet, or tacky, then then clearcoat bonds straight to it.... both ways work, just do what you enjoy most!
Del, I wasn’t sure when you started scuffing the body panels, but the finish product.... you’ve won me over! Great paint job mate. Keep up the awesome work 👍
Thank you Jason, ot's not finished by a long way, I may reduce the amount of silver showing by bringing the lines in a bit, but this is just a first test to see if I like the look! D&Px
To be honest I was at first skeptical about your plans for the fenders and fuel tank.. BUT seeing the front fender done, it really looks cool. Going to be interesting to see how it turns out once everything is done and back on the bike... Take care!!!!
Thanks Tom, I know it's hard sometimes to see our vision, so thanks sticking with it, let's see what it looks like all on the bike... but happy with it so far!
When I've painted a bike with spray cans, I always flat the colour back to get rid of the orange peel, before applying clear lacquer, then flat the lacquer, and apply a wet coat for the gloss. I just wondered why after investing all that time with the grinding you didn't finish the job for the best possible finish??
CHeck out the next video my friend, you'll see the finish on both fenders, I have to say ( and with the greatest of respect of course) that you're making a lot of work for yourself that you don't need to.. you can treat the clear coat like just another coat of paint and lay it on whilst the base coat is still wet... there's two benefitts to this, firstly it will chemically bond at a liquid level way better than any key'd finish with any paper... and combining the base coat and the clear coat together as a total quantity of wet material, you'll achieve a better 'float out', and will only need a minimal wet sand on top of the clear lacquer at the end...obviously we all do what works best for us, so check out tomorrow's video, this is how I do and I hop, perhaps, that the result speaks for itself with a small amount of wet sand this will be like glass. Thanks for sharing your experience too, all the best, Del
Thanks brother, just replied to your email btw!.. and thanks for the offer, if I've moved it by then, am sure there'll be another one! Have a good week buddy, D&Px

To be honest I wasn't too sure about this look at first - however now with the black contrast and lacquer.... it looks superb! (Not garish at all) I love it. Keep it coming Del I learn every time I visit the garage. :-)
Wow Del another great paint job, I love the contrast of black and raw metal swirl. have you thought of fabricating a classic look sissy bar for the back? I think it would go with the new look.
Thats a cool idea for later buddy... i like that.. anything to fab is good..lol But as you know the project is nearing the end now, i want it on the road before the end of the month..ive already sourced the next donor bike.. and i think you'll rather like it buddy... muah ha ha.!
I can't visualise how things will look so was really interested how this was going to turn out. Looks great, really smart. Looking forward to seeing how it looks on the bike!
Ayup Tiny, thanks for your faith mate... am really happy with the result so far, and yup, it will be done by the end of this month for sure, which is more than can be said for Brexit lol... deposit down on the next bike already....!!!!!!!!
I didn't know if I liked the idea but have to say it is fantastic looking def think the while bike will look the part when all done well done brill job
I have to say I was a little skeptical on the way it would look, but it looks fantastic, not bad for a rattle can. But you said you wanted to get away from the bling and it definitely has that bling pop. Don't get me wrong it looks great. I look forward to seeing what it looks like on the bike. Always a pleasure you guys take care.
Yeah, i admit Bradley, it is a bit bling, and maybe that will get it painted over in the end.. but its a bit of fun and im enjoying the learning process... who knows where it will end up..!!
Looks awesome, when I painted my z750 tank with tough black I contacted simoniz/Holt's and they advised me that you can't lacquer over tough black paint, not even their own lacquer. Be good to see how yours comes out 🤞🏻 but you already know by now 😎👍🏻
Hi Ian... Remember the XJR Turbo project, the one we did the true fire paint on?.. that was all Tough Paint black in the base coat if you remember, and we had no issues... but it was allowed to cure for almost two weeks before we did the art work and then layed up 6 coats of 2k clear.... However, as a side note.. the tough paint is thick, and leaves a really prominent ridge between the two finishes... so im trying out some acrylic paint with matching primer for the back fender this weekend...(its all an experiment) hoping that the combination of a thin coat of primer, and a thin coat of regular acrylic black will be thinner than the two coats of tough paint.. we shall see.!
@Moonfleet41 ahhhh gotcha!! I've got to redo my z750 tank as petrol got under the edge of the paint near the neck, just waiting on nicer weather as haven't got anywhere to paint it.
Del it looks insanely good, it will look so good, up against the rest of the black on the bike, not garish cos it's not accents , just a single solid theme running down the middle, be brave Del!
Cheers Dave, im not unhappy with it myself.. but it is maybe a bit bling... time will tell if it looks any good on the bike.. if not, then i can always paint it over in a cool colour... we shall see.. Hope Youz all well mate, have a good week and chat soon.. D&Px
That looks mint bruv. It would certainly be a looker 🤙. That metal has turned out really well. Cant wait to see it . Ride and drive safe both of you take care bruv.
Hi Nik, thanks, glad you approve... I do use primer where applicable, but this particular paint is a soft stone chip paint that doesn't need primer, however, may switch over to regular paint for the rest of this job, in which case I will!
Looking good Del. That's a nice effect if you ask me. Will be interesting to see how it looks when all done & on the bike. Will be checking oot that website as well. Awrabesht to you & Penny from me & all the clan bro. 😉💙🤘
Hey Al, good to hear from you Brother, thanks for your kind words, its a journey of discovery and im learning new things... and thats all good... take care and have a good week you and the clan... Cheers, D&Pxx
err umm still not sure , need to see it on the bike , but saying that enjoy the vids and have learnt alot , will you change the colour of the HT leads ?
Thanks Mike, appreciate that, the HT leads are fine in black, don't see any reason to change them, trying to keep it all mono-chrome as much as I can! Appreciate you sticking with us mate...
@@Moonfleet41 cant see any reason to leave Del , opinion is what makes us learn and grow , not kissing arse but i have learnt a lot from you and respect your choices ,no doubt when its fin i will love it ,
I love bare metal look, I hope you keep it. I’m curious to see over time how the clear over the bare metal holds up. I want to get a second, larger tank for my sportster and just polish the metal with sand paper, add some small touches and then just clear it.
What’s the name of the spray stuff that uses I take it you don’t need no primy just sprayed it on there anyone know the name of it. And where you can buy it
If you mean the black paint, it's called Simoniz Tough Paint, works on bare metal without primer but they do sell a primer for it if you want extra adhesion, it's available online.
Moonfleet41 Thank you Moonfleet 41 I know you’re really busy replying to everyone I really do appreciate it as usual I was in a hurry and I didn’t watch the whole video to the end and I asked what I should’ve done and the information was there but I really do appreciate you replying to me thank you very much. Love the channel you’ve been somewhat of an inspiration to me I’ve just recently bought a bike to a refurbish and bring back to its former glory so please keep the videos coming they do mean a lot to amateurs like me so thanks once again
You're most welcome my friend, good luck with the build, keep in touch and let us know how it goes, and feel free to drop us a line if you need a second opinion, always happy to help!
That look is starting to grow on me, didn't think it would. I agree, until you get it on the bike, not possible to really tell. Loved the transition editing when changing pads on the grinder. Looks very much like 'This Old Tony'. Excellent welding and machining channnel, especially given he is a hobbyist. Also he's very funny!
Well not sure which way your gunna go Del , but to me that looks awesome :))))) As a side note if its a bit much maybe a more flat black ? Always so inspired when watching you work mate .
Thank you buddy, that's very kind... I've made a small change behind the sense to tone it down a bit, it's not to use flat black, but rather instead to narrow the band of silver by bringing the lines in a bit, and the black then lifts up on to the top of te fender making it a smaller proportion of the two tone... stick with it, you'll see!!
Very clean look, different but grows on you. Now over here in Arizona we call that paint can a Rattle Can...just sayin! Can't wait to see the completed bike.
Nice paint job! By the way, I did not forget your plate. I'll still send it, ok? The problem is that is hard to find one, 'cause they think I want to buy one to use it, and it is illegal.
Thanks Andy, don't do anything if it's too difficult/awkward, it does't matter, it's just for people who may have an old expired one kicking around in the garage... we appreciate your support, very kind of you!
Very nice indeed, Del! I can't yet visualise it on the bike but, as it is, it's undoubtedly a handsome, well-executed paint job. Can't wait to see it mounted. Awesome quotation, bro 👍
'handsome, well executed'... I'd reserve judgement on that one brother, mixing paints even by the same manufacturer can be a disaster at the last minute! See you soon brother...
Yes, it is great! All Delboy fans can now follow not only a great mechanic but also an artist. I would not be surprised if the big motorcycle companies copy this idea into some mass production. Inspiration - big time! /Kalle
Hi Kalle, thank you for that extremely kind endorsement... I think they already do, some of the specialist CVO paints and 8Ball paint schemes from Triumph feature bare metal under clear lacquer, it's not original entirely... this just shows you can do it at home and make a reasonable job of it too!
OK, that's impressive - when you first leapt on the original paint with the grinder, I admit I did wince a little - but, as a true believer that all paint is excess weight & therefore fundamentally silly - t'was a token wince at best. Must say, it looks as good if not better than I hoped it would; so I'll stick with my original daft, yet gifted suggestion of a light ivory clearcoat over the lot, so building up the depth to a rich, 'era evoking sepia swirling above the mysteries of time'. (Thinks: Hmm, flat scrumpy revived half & half with Special Brew IS different - 'hand me that piano!' : ) x
Hey brother, thank you for that, I have your email, and will be replying later this evening, been buried in paintwork, admin and day job all week... need a 25hr day!
Got to say it does look good and still can't get over how good you spray with a can I still need a lot of practice. I think you should go with it mate I reckon it will come out great looking.
Not going to lie del I thought the swirls were going to look shit but I must say it looks awesome I really like the tone between the black and sliver and that pin strip just looks awsome well done man really blew my mind 👍👍
Thanks mate, Its been a gamble from the start, still not sure what it will look like on the bike, but happy with it so far.. ! Thanks for your kind words buddy .
@@gavinhughes8623 I treat it like just another paint coat, so i leave it about 20 minutes for the black to flash off, then peal the tap back before the paint dries too much but is still cured enough not to run or creep once the tape is pealed.... then coat up with lacquer... seems to work for me, as long as ythe garage is warm and dry enough it wont bloom either..

To be honest I wasn't too sure about this look at first - however now with the black contrast and lacquer.... it looks superb! (Not garish at all)
I love it. Keep it coming Del I learn every time I visit the garage. :-)
Thank you Sir, that is too kind... I'm still 'jury out' on it myself, but happy with the technical results ... thanks for watching mate
Love the paint scheme and it looks cherry bro!!! Cheers from across the pond🍻
Thank you most kindly Sir, appreciate your kind words, am enjoying the process!
What was the finest grade flap wheel sander you used ?.
It doesn't come in a numbered grit mate, it's just liek Scotchbrite stuck to a flap disc and the blue disc is just labelled as 'fine'...
I thought you finished off with flap wheels as opposed to the fibre wheels ?.
@@Moonfleet41 cool stuff Del Im looking forward to it. ride safe mate :)
I can't visualise how things will look so was really interested how this was going to turn out. Looks great, really smart. Looking forward to seeing how it looks on the bike!
Thank you Michael, me too, I don't think you get a real sense of it until the panel is fitted, so we shall see!
anything out of a spray can is not gasoline resistant soon as gas hits it it's gone!
Nice job Del, remember to fill out the change of colour section on the V5 and send it back to the DVLA.
Oh yes indeed, I certainly will my friend, wise advice
Looking good! 👍
You are the DB's when it comes to the spray can Del!
Keep pushing out these good videos mate.
another great video, be interesting to see how that looks on the bike, i like the idea. are you still planning on finishing it this month?
Ayup Tiny, thanks for your faith mate... am really happy with the result so far, and yup, it will be done by the end of this month for sure, which is more than can be said for Brexit lol... deposit down on the next bike already....!!!!!!!!
@@Moonfleet41 nice, guessing it's a surprise? I'm trying to get motivated to do oil on bandit and check clutch amongst other things
I didn't know if I liked the idea but have to say it is fantastic looking def think the while bike will look the part when all done well done brill job
Thanks Chris, really appreciate that mate, and glad you like it!
The fender looks great, Del. It pops but it's not garish. Good job on the video, D&P.
Thanks John, much appreciated, glad you're enjoying it!
Looks amazing Del, the pin striping is spot on 👌
Thanks Simone, it's a long way from perfect, but it'll do for me and am happy with the process!
At first I didn't know if it would look right but now you have painted it and pin striped it wow it looks pretty dam cool nice work del 👍
Thank you most kindly Sir!
Wow. Looks great. You guys ship to America?
That looks mega. So there’s no need to rub down / back between coats?
Not unless you stop and let it dry for 48 hours first... i painted it all in one go.!
Great job del!!!!!! Your videos are actually really relaxing
Thank you buddy, I appreciate your faith... and you have a point... really appreciate your kind support, D&Px
Looks great Del. Not too garish. This bike is going to be incredible!
Take it easy pal.
Thanks Bert, appreciate your faith, cant wait to get it on the road! Cheers!
Looks superb buddy, hell of a job 🤘🤘
(P) Looking awesome, can’t wait to see them all mounted. Definitely a DBC! Say hi to Pen from us 3.
Cheers Ray, glad you like it buddy, it's just an experiment and am happy with it so far!
great job as usual Del. Any particular reason you never use a primer before painting?
I was very sceptical but watching the hole process it looks awesome. 👍
err umm still not sure , need to see it on the bike , but saying that enjoy the vids and have learnt alot , will you change the colour of the HT leads ?
Me too my friend, it's new ground for me also, so we shall see! If it fails, then I'll just paint it... good luck with yours!
I think it's a keeper Del, looks great.
Hi Dell, nice job. How long did you wait between black and lacquer ? thanks , Gus
Just treated it like identical coats, so 15 to 20 minutes..!
Looks awesome man. Great stuff. Really enjoy your channel.
Thanks Brett, much appreciated!
From what I’ve seen it looks great Once it’s on the bike we will be able to tell for sure.
Thanks Alan, hoping it's gonna turn out subtle and not look too bling!
I LOVE it!!! Awesome Del! Keep it like that it’ll look beautiful!
Well not sure which way your gunna go Del , but to me that looks awesome :)))))
As a side note if its a bit much maybe a more flat black ?
@@Moonfleet41 ok Del. But I'm stubborn, so if I find one, it's yours lol.
@@MrAndyCarlos Ha ha, Sold.. then ill display it with pride sir..!
I like where this is going del. you’ve a good eye for detail 👍🏻
@@Moonfleet41
Oh! 😕
Thanks a lot Dell
Gold leaf pin stripe on the black I think would be a nice touch.
Looks Awesome!
Good night my friend!!
Gorgeous
Simply gorgeous 😉🤘🤓
Only can say...... gorgeous job
Regards 🤓
Keep pending ✌️🤓
Thanks David, great to hear from you always, we really appreciate your support!
@@Moonfleet41 🤓
Hey Del - did you notice at ~6:20 in the video you can see the bike breathing under the plastic sheet :D
Damn Bruce, its alive already...lol
Looks very good. Can’t wait to see it on the bike!
Normality is resumed.. a sterling Lod Dudism as ever..!
Like the black and metal finish BRILLIANT a thin orange pinstripe a little bit of MackieBass magic coooool
Looks amazing del! I would keep it like that!
Hey brother, thank you for that, I have your email, and will be replying later this evening, been buried in paintwork, admin and day job all week... need a 25hr day!
@@Moonfleet41 Not to worry bro! I know the feeling. Can't get over the finish on that front fender, looking forward to seeing it dry
Why all the cleaning but then no cleaning to remove the residue from the tape?
Every time I use a spray can, the words tack coat come to mind!
Got to say it does look good and still can't get over how good you spray with a can I still need a lot of practice. I think you should go with it mate I reckon it will come out great looking.
Even newer paint stripper works, but only if you wrap the part in plastic and let it sit for at least a day.
The warmer the weather is, the better
Looks sick mate 🤘
The reflection is the beginning tricked me. It looked like you already painted the tank. It looked exactly like you described the paint.
@@Moonfleet41 on the lacker del how long did you leave the black dry before putting it on 🤔
@@gavinhughes8623 I treat it like just another paint coat, so i leave it about 20 minutes for the black to flash off, then peal the tap back before the paint dries too much but is still cured enough not to run or creep once the tape is pealed.... then coat up with lacquer... seems to work for me, as long as ythe garage is warm and dry enough it wont bloom either..
Really like that, looks amazing mate and we'll suited for the bike.
I think that looks awesome mate! Super job :)
Loving it del boy would love to see all off them done
Nice one del.looks great need to see it on the bike..
Won't be long Steve, forging ahead!
WOW..Looks awesome.
can you smoke the area that has the silver. so from a distance it has a slight 2 tone effect
Hi Richard, I was kinda thinking bare steel is a feature just as long as it doesn't look too bling!
Looks killer , love it.
