The first empire we are going to visit is the Aztec Empire, which ruled over most of Mesoamerica from the 14th to the 16th century. The Aztecs were known for their advanced civilization, but also for their brutal practice of human sacrifice. They believed that the gods needed human blood to sustain the world, and that the best way to please them was to offer them the hearts of their enemies. The Aztecs would capture prisoners of war and bring them to the top of their pyramids, where priests would cut out their hearts and throw them into a fire. The bodies would then be tossed down the stairs, where they would be skinned, eaten, or used for other purposes
