I'm in the same boat working at a college operating 3 low pressure steam boilers in a heating plant. We also operate 2 large centrifugal chillers and 2 cooling towers. I'd like to get into the oil industry next year.

I’m currently 24 and have my 4th class power engineering certificate, alongside with a process operations certificate, both I obtained from SAIT. I work in the health care field making $30/h as a maintenance worker III. I’d love to move up one day and find a job in the oil and gas industry.

The market as I understand is saturated with 4th class ticket holders with little or no experience. I gave up a much higher paying job to take advantage of the opportunity.
@Eureka 4th class aren't necessarily sought after. 3rd class has an abundance of potential work in Canada even straight out of school. My friend just got hired on straight out of college (3rd class) at $48/h. Of course being a 2nd class is even more ideal (7 semesters of college in Canada) And once again opens up even more jobs.

Just to put another perspective on this industry, here in the Philippines a career in the power plant industry is not rewarding, especially for engineers. The salary is very low you would even question if you're really an engineer. Even though what you do is complicated (most of the time requires both phsyical and mental effort) and important, the salary does not reflect that.
Power engineering may be a sub-field of electrical engineering, but i would challenge that more power engineers are working in steam plants and refrigeration plants than electrical employment. We're much more than operators and maintenance men. 4th and 3rd class operate and perform regular maintenance on equipment more than that of a 2nd or 1st class engineer. This greatly depends on the industry you're employed. A 1st class power engineer has a very similar role to that of a mechanical engineer, regarding plant designing and commissioning, and much more responsibility than 5th,4th and 3rd class engineers. There is a place for power engineers in most industries. In the health care sector, we operate auxiliary equipment such as OTSG's (once through steam generators) responsible for supplying low pressure (103kpa/15psi) steam to air handling units that distribute high quality air to every corner of the building. Also, high pressure (820kpa/120psi) steam is used in operating rooms for sterilization of operating equipment. District energy projects are excellent examples of power engineering opportunities, refineries, breweries, sub stations, agricultural industry... There are vast employment opportunities for all the different levels of power engineers. Knowing where to look is very important. labeling all power engineers operators and maintenance men is a very dull, ignorant statement to make. Calling all power engineers operators and maintenance men, is no different than calling all electricians or plumbers or carpenters or any other qualified tradesmen, an apprentice. Its just not correct.
Steven Mullins This is all operations. There is no design or even redesigning of systems. You repair failures (mechanic) and start and stop machinery (operator). Your industry is a trade and does not require a degree, but a certificate. Nothing wrong with that, but do not compare power "engineers" with mechanical engineers. A degreed engineer and a operator are not even remotely close. Im not saying there isn't a place for operators because there absolutely is a need, energy production isn't going anywhere. Also, you used the word and it's variant "operator" four times in order to describe your job..
