  • The five main branches of civil engineering are widely recognized by most of us who choose a career in the field. We begin to develop an interest in one of such branches during the early college years after taking more specific classes or attending presentations of companies within this branch. Today, however, Isaac reveals how a particular presentation got him into an area that few people know of as a potential branch they can get into: The Transmission World!
Transmission engineers are those who combine the knowledge from different fields, such as civil and electrical engineering, and apply it to the planning and design of new routes of high-voltage power lines for delivering energy from sources to buildings and public spaces. By mentioning the different tasks to be completed once we’re assigned a project, from field surveying to power line design on PLS-CADD to drilling the poles’ foundations, Isaac details what a day in the life of a transmission engineer looks like - something he’s been involved with for the past 12 years!
As a transmission engineer, we can not apply civil engineering concepts to ensure the correct design and construction of the power lines’ foundations and structures, but we can also learn a lot from interacting with many different departments, from crew members building the project on the field to electrical engineers designing a substation. This is a must-listen for everyone since it lays out the many opportunities that can be found in between the common five branches everybody is used to.

You just gained a new subscriber! I will be starting a co-op next semester as a student in this role, and this video validated my interest in transmission engineering!! Great content!

Thank you so much for a brief discussion. didnt know anything about transmission line industry and what a civil engineers possible role could be as a transmission line engineer. I recently got called for an interview as an civil engineering intern in an electrical comnpany who basically provides TL solutions. now that i know its a multidimentional career i am getting interested in it and hope to make it through the interview.

Yep! Transmission Engineering is mutil disciplinary. It's a good place to be. Good luck!

Do you require additional training within the electrical discipline to better understand the purpose and performance of transmission lines? I noticed you speak about concepts I've never heard of before in civil engineering when you describe the transmission lines for example the ampacity of the line.

New UHV DC lines being built to eliminate issues of AC 60hz sine wave matching when connecting two or more sources.
No RF from DC and skin losses.

Great description! This is a fun industry, you get a little bit of everything.
Tline structures can be so cool, like the Mickey Mouse ones at Disney or all the BOLD curved arm structures in Indiana.

I’m an electrical engineer (PE). I’m leaving a municipality to start doing transmission work. I would love a video (or series) on PLSCADD basics. Have you ever thought about doing that?

Thought about it but need to personally buy the license and those are $$.

Hello Isaac, thanks for the informative video. I have an interview next week with the transmission team at my local power utility company. Just wondering if you have any tips for my interview. It will be very helpful if I can gain some insight from an experienced transmission engineer like what kind of quality and skill set a transmission team will typically look for in a applicant. Just some info about myself, I am currently a pole line engineer for distribution utility poles, and I am finishing up my structural master's degree in the coming May. Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks

They will mainly ask you questions related to jobs performed, plscadd experience, difficult situations you've dealt with, safety, how to manage time. They could ask what's in a typical job IFC packet. Shoot me an email if you have more questions!

My name is Jai, by profession I am working in an electricity industry as a Trainee Line Mechanic. I have a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication and a Power Engineer diploma degree. It's been 6 months working in the industry , due to some internal changes in company we are moving around in the nation and job opportunities are coming up. As in that a vacancy of Transmission Line Engineering came, I am keen to apply and go forward it but I don't know
If things can be possible after watching your video. Like you were talking about PLC and AutoCAD, but I have a basic knowledge of powerworld software on which we were designing our network while studying do you think that will be enough or I have to enhance my knowledge in some other tools to make it happen?
On the basis of my study can I get this job and learn tools parallel to work?

How math heavy would you say this role is?
