What I really love about Soon He Newbold, is that she really gives everyone their time to shine. Instead of the violins playing interesting music while everyone else plays the same note over and over again. As a cellist who is sick of whole notes, this piece was a joy to play
I love this song. As a bass player, I feel like I am not important. Soon Hee Newbold makes all sections very important while making sure the music isnt too cluttered. Love ot
+Stefanwolf1 bass is an instrument that few enjoy actually playing. I love the power behind it. I'm 5'2" and it makes me feel big oddly enough. Everyone has their instrument. I'm glad you found yours 😊
the time 5:17 to 5:30, OMG I felt like entering a different world that is at peace or something, and I enjoyed that part a lot... I also felt alive, and felt like I could accomplish anything, it takes all the bad things away!!!! But i am not the only one who loves that part...who agrees?
when we played this, my orchestra teacher made up lyrics for some of the weird rhythmic parts... "I AM PERSEUS, YES I AM, YES I AM" and would proceed to sing them loudly every time we played :D
lovelyxmai I came here randomly to tell you that there are many arangements out there, start With Two South American Tangos and Espiritu Guanacasteco para Orquesta
Oh my goodness YES! I'm glad someone else noticed this too :) I think the cello part underneath the violins makes it even more epic. The cellos are just amazing in this entire song. Even though I play violin, I think the cellos are the most fabulous part of any orchestra ever :D
Indeed. The song is awesome, but it's perfect right there. The build-up has been coming for the whole song, the melody resolves in the upper voices at the same time the cellos drop out, then three measures later they come back in at fortefortemissimo and resolve the chord, and it's incredibly epic.
5:17 to 5:43 gives me goosebumps every time. I’m a first violin and when we finally played this in concert I got lost in the music, I felt like I was just in a whole new world away from everything
I'm a viola player and we don't get much glory but this song makes every part important. I feel like that I have worth to this piece of music and it's awesome 😄 I'm the only freshman in my high school's chamber orchestra so I'm a little challenged by the song but words can't describe how fun it is to play.
+Ebella Belala I play viola for this song too as 9th grade and I honestly thought measures 39-43 were the hardest part in the whole song... bunch of weird fingering played at 1:03 in this song XD. But I love the song too much and the part at 4:53 with the viola melody sounds so awesome.
+Ebella Belala That's what I really like about Newbold. She gives every instrument a chance to shine, which is great because usually the violins get all the glory. I mean, I don't play viola, I play cello, but I still get what you mean. I haven't played this piece, but I've played many of her other pieces, and I just have to say that Soon Hee Newbold is probably my favorite composer. Her pieces are just so unique and fun to play.
I'm a Viola player also and I am actually going recommend this to my orchestra teacher! I'm a sophomore in the Advanced class so of your a freshman and doing this song this would be a piece of cake for us! I'm so happy to see another fello Viola player in the comments
Soon Hee Newbold is amazing and always highlights the talents of the viola section and some of the lower strings rather than hearing the norm of the violins getting all the melodies. Gives a much different and nice feeling to the songs.
@thehsushoe yes! we're playing that during school right now, and the second violin part IS hard. even the first violins agreed it was harder because of all the weird harmonies and string crossings.
i was obseeeeesed with this piece in middle/high school, so it's really exciting being able to revisit as an adult and actually be able to play it well 😂 this piece will always be one of my favorites
Aww don't feel too bad... I'm also the principal cellist in my orchestra and there are some times when I feel like my stand partner is better than me. Just practice more- That's all I can say. :/
our orch director wants us to play this because all the highschool teachers told her not to do this piece for middle school so we're playing it out of spite
OMG DUDE YOU ARE THE BEST! THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS! YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY CRAPPY ORCHESTRA RECORDINGS I'VE LISTENED TO (not this particular piece but...) THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO SOOO MUCH.
This is a beautiful song, my music conductor was suppose to give me the music...even though im in 7th grade only and the high school is playing this song. i absolutly love this. Thanks Mr.B for showing me this song!
I did middle school all state orchestra this weekend and Soon Hee Newbold conducted us it was amazing she's amazing we played two of her songs Storm and American Landscape
This song was commissioned by my teacher back in 2008 and he and Soon Hee Newbold collaborated and came up with Perseus for my school orchestra so if it wasn't for Mr. Bridges (Matthew Bridges) thinking about His Grandville symphony Orchestra this beautiful piece would not be alive today. everyone give Mr. Bridges props, he's an amazing teacher. we just sight read it today in fact when we got the news that this piece was made for specifically for our symphony and our school GRANDVILLE HIGH!!!!!!
I played this in 8th grade (I’m out of college now) so it’s been a while but I always keep coming back to this song. It’s always enchanted me and it always makes me feel like I’m a character in some fantasy movie
Notice the description says "shitty high school orchestra recording," not "shitty high school orchestra." Because most recordings found on youtube are not good HQ recordings.
This is the Song I heard the High school play when I was in Elementary that got me into Orchestra. I played Cello for 7 years and Finally we start Learning This song. Then Covid happened and I haven’t been at school for a Year. No Senior year to resume, just straight to college I guess. ;(
i played this piece as a second violinist for our concert junior year and as a first for our LGPE my senior year of high school. so learning both parts was really fun
The first search result for "Perseus soon hee newbold" will be a site called jwpepper. It'll have an audio player. Right click it, and there'll be a "download this song" button. If you're still confused just PM the person who made this video.
Just got this song yesterday :P I'm crazy excited to learn it...everybody in my high school's orchestra played it in middle school, except for the three seniors (me included). Guess I have to step up to the learning curve very quickly.
Such inspiration to make this piece sound like it should. Just amazing, gives me chills when it gets to the last minute of music. Ah! I'm trying to get my chamber orchestra to play this, but I have no clue if we can actually handle a piece like this with a smaller group. :/
@MrUkuleleist yeah it keeps music alive, when you close your eyes and hear music, its so much better, your mind takes control of the story and clearly visualizes what the composer sees.... and you can clearly understand what he's saying in such a deep level....
I played this for orchestra in high school! Technically it's quite an easy piece, but you have to work super hard to make it sound great! I love this song.
My two favorite bits are at 1:22 - 2:10, and 2:10 - 2:28 My favorite Cello and Double Bass (with extension) bit is at 2:28 - 2:46 My favorite Violin I portion is at 3:35 - 3:58 My favorite Violin II portion is at 4:19 - 4:23 My favorite Viola portion is at 4:23 - 4:38
we're currently playing this in our orchestra and it is so awesome and amazing! I play cello, and even though it is tough to learn, it is so beautiful :) also, don't hate on high schoolers. Every great musician was in high school at one time.
my highschool playing this piece. i decided to listen to it. Its a really cool piece. my highschool orchestra has a lot of skill so this will turn out. awesome
@Robbyrebelous Me to, my orchestra is going to play it in a month or so. I sight read it the other day and I cant wait to get this polished for my concert
lol my high school played this song last year at an orcestra competion. We rocked everyones socks off cause we sounded so freakin perfect. not to sound conceited or anything. but not until i compared our recording to this one did i realize how awesome we were. and how fast we played it O.o
For some reason listening to songs that you have or are playing makes it 500% more enjoyable.

I love it and want to play it in my orchestra!
Yes!
What I really love about Soon He Newbold, is that she really gives everyone their time to shine. Instead of the violins playing interesting music while everyone else plays the same note over and over again. As a cellist who is sick of whole notes, this piece was a joy to play
I totally agree. As a violist (not violinist), I've always played the background music until my orchestra played Riders in the Night. :)
Taty G *ahem* spirit of the american west *ahem*
hey hey no hate to violins tho its not like we beg for the melody
Yuri Park well I mean. . . *any other instrument gets part* violins: sO tRaSh wE sHoUlD haVe iT
Even includes the violas 😂
That part at 6:16 sounds terrible I'm not sure what Newbold was thinking
Ikr? It's just... WHY!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!???!?!
There is no 6:16
LOL
^^ you get it yet?
:D
Lol yes it does
I love this song. As a bass player, I feel like I am not important. Soon Hee Newbold makes all sections very important while making sure the music isnt too cluttered. Love ot
bass player here too lol
cello gets middle ground on the melody, but on this song, cellos get the best part of the song so I'm happy
+Connor Smith The blend is also amazing
+Dona Rogers Basses sound awesome, but I would never play it. I play viola and I love the viola part for this song so much.
+Stefanwolf1 bass is an instrument that few enjoy actually playing. I love the power behind it. I'm 5'2" and it makes me feel big oddly enough. Everyone has their instrument. I'm glad you found yours 😊

when we played this, my orchestra teacher made up lyrics for some of the weird rhythmic parts...
"I AM PERSEUS, YES I AM, YES I AM"
and would proceed to sing them loudly every time we played :D
AHAHAHA
lolz
Luis Contreras starting at 4:06
+Ashley Pearson lol I hear it

I just realized that my school orchestra has played many many songs composed by Soon He Newbold, haha.
I thought it was just me ever since the fourth grade😂😂 I've never had a cello price without her in our winter spring or both concerts
Same at my Orchestra we have played at lot of Newbold's pieces
lovelyxmai I came here randomly to tell you that there are many arangements out there, start With Two South American Tangos and Espiritu Guanacasteco para Orquesta
lovelyxmai ifkr?!
Your school has great taste
whole song is amazing but at 5:17 is the most epic part of any orchestral music ever.
Oh my goodness YES! I'm glad someone else noticed this too :) I think the cello part underneath the violins makes it even more epic. The cellos are just amazing in this entire song. Even though I play violin, I think the cellos are the most fabulous part of any orchestra ever :D
Ashton Carr
yeah 5:17 to 5:36 is the best part and 1st half cello and second half violin
YESSS!!! i listen to this and hear that part and i just idk...i love that part
Indeed. The song is awesome, but it's perfect right there. The build-up has been coming for the whole song, the melody resolves in the upper voices at the same time the cellos drop out, then three measures later they come back in at fortefortemissimo and resolve the chord, and it's incredibly epic.
This piece is pretty amazing, but i think Warrior Legacy did better. Just my opinion.
5:17 to 5:43 gives me goosebumps every time. I’m a first violin and when we finally played this in concert I got lost in the music, I felt like I was just in a whole new world away from everything
As a Bassist, this is my favorite part to play, I never get the melody.
5:17 to 5:36 makes you have this certain happy feeling. I don't know why.
Because the basses have the melody finally haha :D
I've been waiting but basses have melody in a song called Deep Sea Fandango
KochieProductions you are my new best friend :P

5:17 is my favorite part. I play that over and over for hours.
As a Bassist, this is my favorite part to play, I never get the melody.
I get to play this song this year, I love the cello part!

This is all my orchestra wants to play, which sucks, because I can't play it very well. Even though I'm the 1st Cellist, which is kinda sad.
Aww don't feel too bad... I'm also the principal cellist in my orchestra and there are some times when I feel like my stand partner is better than me. Just practice more- That's all I can say. :/
My partner is just straight up better than me.
our orch director wants us to play this because all the highschool teachers told her not to do this piece for middle school so we're playing it out of spite

I played this for orchestra in high school! Technically it's quite an easy piece, but you have to work super hard to make it sound great! I love this song.
