Can Comedy Be Funny Anymore? | Andrew Schulz | TEDxColumbusCircle

  • For many comics, the job is to be a bit shocking, a bit provocative, and test a few social norms just to get a laugh. But in a culture where norms are being blown to bits and everyday life is a provocation, what’s a comic to do? This thoughtful and honest talk by writer, actor, and comedian Andrew Schulz reveals the challenges of getting an audience to laugh at a time when not much shocks anyone anymore.
    TEDxColumbusCircle (www.tedxcolumbuscircle.com) was produced by a team from Manhattan Productions (www.manhattanproductions.com), Womenkind (www.womenkind.net), Gender Fair (www.genderfair.com), and reimagine.world. Andrew Schulz is an American comedian known for his work on Guy Code, The Brilliant Idiots podcast and the Amazon original series Sneaky Pete. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Anyone is intelligent to give a TEDx talk. Don't forget the X. Andrew is just a boring narcissist that gets laughs for slow people by hitting his knee and pretending to crack up at the material he's told thousands of times already. His podcast is insufferable. He laughs so hard it's like he's trying to clear his throat. He slaps his knee violently and he's always yelling. I have no doubt that he would do well in most comedy clubs. He's figured out how to make people laugh even at his bad jokes, so he's clearly very skilled. But he's truly skilled as a social media marketer. He convinced hundreds of thousands of preteens and simple adults to think he is way better than he is by trying to sell the idea that he's "dangerous." He's not even truly controversial. No one cares about the "edginess" of his material. People rip on him because he's obnoxious, vain, shallow and the last person you would ever want to spend time with in real life.

Anyway if you think about it all great creations offend someone in some way, shape, or form and often times your motivation for creating something(especially in comedy) is to offend people you disagree with. This is true regardless of your religion or political affiliation. Not everything offensive is art but the most insightful pieces of art that actually create meaningful change invariably shake things up and offend.

    Comedians are the best philosophers. It's often masked by their jokes but that side comes alive in talks like these. And the standup scene is savage, every comic deserves a bravery award for just trying on the stage.

      What's a boomer rant and what's your alternative of choice?

    • @3Demon100
      @3Demon100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@EatPieYes It's rants about how life used to be, or how we can't do/say certain things anymore. Which as a comedian you can still get away with saying a lot of things. Alternatives are telling jokes on relatable experiences, dark humor, absurdist humor, etc.

      @@3Demon100 He does get preachy with his anti-pc stance but from what I've seen he keeps that off stage (except in this case obviously), meaning that it's not part of his comedy routine. His actual comedy contains bits of all those types of comedy you're naming.
