What a wonderful video! I’m Russian and I’m very happy that you like Russian books, I’ve read “War and Peace”, “The Master and Margarita” and “Crime and Punishment”. They are so beautiful! And also we studied these books in our literature lessons. Hope you’ll enjoy all books.
Hello from Russia! I really advise you to read Pushkin. He is classics. He wrote either poems or books. He is our the best poet ever. We are very proud of him!
Crime and Punishment is my all time favorite, there was a period in my life when I used to reread it once a year. I can't even find the right words to explain how much that novel means to me. I hope you'll like it, I'd love to hear your thoughts about it one day. 😊 Beautiful editions! I love your channel! ❤
Nikolett Tölgyes Crime and Punishment is the greatest novel ever written, it haunts me everyday. It is Fyodor Dostoyevsky greatest achievement, even greater than The Brothers Karamazov.
For Russophiles - You MUST see the movie Russian Ark. It’s so quirky, interesting, and absolutely gorgeous! Set in the famous Winter Palace and Hermitage museum and is famous for being the only feature length film to date shot in a single continuous take. Even 1917 which looks like a single shot really wasn’t. Be sure to also watch the fabulous extra feature documentary about the museum and what it means to the Russian people.
Wow Helene !! what a beautiful collection of Russian Classics... I remember watching the movie of Doctor Zhivago and Anna Karenina... I just love it ! I'm gonna order some of that books for sure!! thank for sharing ;)
Hello Helene, I have these editions and they are beautiful. Have just read Doctor Zhivago which was amazing. Only have The Master and Margarita to go. They are wonderful classics and I hope you enjoy them. Lovely video, as always xxx
Beautiful editions! I am currently reading War and Peace (45% in) and I am reading it a long side with the audiobook and absolutely loving the experience! Since the narrator makes different intonation for each character, it made it easier to remember who is who at the beginning of the novel until I was confident on remembering the story lines of each person. Highly recommend it!
GORGEOUS books! I read Crime and Punishment a few months back and it still doesn't seem to leave my mind. Looking forward to reading Anna Karenina and War and Peace 🖤
Yeah, if you like lietrature , I think that story will never ever fade away once you read it. I did read it 10 years ago, and its still so vivid on my mind as if it was yesterday.
Gorgeous editions! You do deserve them! I've been wanting to reread Dostoyevsky and getting one of these special editions would really inspire me to pick him up again. :) A vlog about reading War & Peace sounds great!
Crime and Punishment has been recommended on several book tubes today, I've been thinking of starting Anna Karenina, however, after several reviews I've ordered myself a copy of Crime and Punishment.
Please please do a video on War and Peace. I am 2/3 of the way through it right now and I'm loving it, but I I did find that I needed a plan of attack to conquer this book. I would love to hear from you and other readers who have read or are currently reading it.
I got through it by setting a daily page goal and not reading anything else each day until I had done the required 15 pages. Usually I would read more so I could finish a chapter and it ended up being more like 18 or so pages a day. Took me a long time but I finally finished it. :)
Yamini (SkepticalReader) and Ange (Beyond the Page) did a read-along last summer which was really good. I think their videos outlining the reading plan are still up, but the GoodReads group seems to have been deleted. I wasn't able to keep up as I travelled overseas for work quite alot last year, but the daily target was very doable. I don't think it was more than c.40 pages per day max, which I found much easier to do with the Maude translation (e.g. Everyman library edition) than the translation used for these Vintage editions.
I recently finished reading War and Peace. My approach to War and Peace, I set a pace of 50 pages everyday, sometimes I would read more than the minimum of 50 pages, I always read to the end of the chapter. I stayed disciplined, I tried reading everyday, I finished the novel in 30 days, four weeks and 2 days. Once you get going, the pages fly by quickly, one could read War and a Peace for hours, it would only feel like minutes. One travels to Russia in the early 19th century reading War and Peace.
Hi! I am from Hungary and I think Russian literature is the best in the world next to Hungarian and German. My all time favourite is Mr Dostoevsky . He is just amazing, I have read almost all his books and they really fascinate me to the utmost. I have already embarked to reread his books starting with the Idiot and I am going to carry on with the Karamazov Brothers. But, of course , Crime and Punishment is the most excellent. I wish I could afford those editions, checked them on Depository, and honestly...they are far too costly for me. Nevertheless, they are gergeous. P.S. I like your videos.
Great video. I just finished Crime and Punishment and i absolutely loved it. It's now my favorite Russian classic. I haven't read Anna K yet, and i've only read 200 pages of Life and Fate. So who knows if one of those will knock C&P off my top spot!
❣Hi, Helene, amazing tips! I love Russian books, too, my husband is teacher for the Russian language, so we've almost all books in Russian, too, but I'm the bigger reader, so I've made it through almost all books you recommended, of course the german editions.. . Your editions look wonderful, I enjoy lovely outsides almost as much as the inside, i mean: the content;-)... I missed Anton Tschechov though? About the last century I've read the diaries of ALJA RACHMANOWA and her beautiful biographies about famous artists, for example the big two parted book about the life of FJODOR DOSTOJEWSKI. Especially her diaries are kind of heartbreaking, not because of her character, but because of the time she was living in. She was a very shy person, but in her book she's a light in the dark, for her family and husband. I've been in Russia, learned to read the letters, but my Russian isn't good enough to read these books in Russian. Well, I could go on and on...but now I've to do a research, I never read THE IDIOT, don't know, why... by the way: in Russian books I always use bigger post its, to write down the names of the people, they have not only the names, they use a lot of nick names, too, and i hardly could recognise, who is who:-). I'm so glad to 'meet you' (kind of), nobody shares my passion totally, especially the Russian books are too 'thick' for the taste of most people I know:-))). Enjoy! 1000 tak, Monika❣
Monika Marsollek, Hemingway highy praised Russian literature and wondered why not many people read it. so you are not alone) I personally love clasical literature and Russian classical literature is my favorite one. exactly because this literature is not for children, it is not commics, it is food for brain
Not going to lie I've been coveting your books in this video lol. The font size looks perfect and the covers are gorgeous! Might have to buy a few or all of them now. I haven't read any of these books so having a copy would be great.
While I have read several, the only Great Russian Classic I paid serious attention to was The Idiot, which was incredible. I brushed through several others too quickly.
All men who watch the women's Olympic gymnastics on TV become Humbert Humbert. What astounds me most about Lolita is that English was Nabokov's third language.
Yes, I'd love to see how you plan to read War and Peace! I tried to read it years ago but kept getting the characters mixed up. Seemed like some of their names were similar.
I did a war and leave book club on the installment plan-we read about 300 Pgs a month. I handed out a list of all the characters (each has first name, family name and nickname) to refer to people as they read. Get Maude translation.
I read Svetlana Alexievich's Second Hand TIme: The Last of the Soviets: An Oral History which won the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is amazing! I highly recommend it!
Jennifer Arnold, they gave her Nobel Prize only because she was anti-Soviet. the same as they gave Nobel Prize to Solzhenitsin. the west just promotes anti-soviet propaganda. It has nothing to do with quality of literature.
There is, of course, an earlier version of or trial run for Lolita in Russian, The Enchanter…The Glenny translation of Master has been superseded by the Burgin and O’Connor and Aplin. As Bulgakov scholar J. Curtis, noted in her fine book on Master i Margarita, the P&V is not recommended…Danish, I assume...
I tried to read War and Peace with the readalong Ange and Yamini hosted last year but didn’t finish it 😂 plan to read it again this year, so very excited to see your vlog!
The Bookish Land I'm relieved I'm not the only person who didn't finish the book in that readalong. Hopefully I'll finish it this year. Good luck! P.S. I've been off YT for a while so need to catch up on your vids. So excited you've started your Chinese Lit series!
These are gorgeous and I plan to have them on my shelves as I have been eyeing these too for some time. Do you own Bloomsbury Modern Classics editions? They are beautiful too and I am planning to buy those too. Lots of spending 😣😜😁
I have the edition of War & Peace 😊 do you find it different reading different translators? I'm holding off buying the edition of Anna because it has a different translator from the one I read and enjoyed (same translator as that edition of War & Peace).
I read Lolita back in my 20s and remember really enjoying it! I remember Lolita herself being not so very innocent. I won't say anymore. :) I want to read all of the aforementioned Russian books!
I have a question regarding the product...I recently bought 4 of them ( except Tolstoy) and my copy of Life and fate looks totally different from others. The pages are whitish instead of creamish, and thinner pages than others. When I stack all four, Life and fate looks different. Anyone reading this comment, can you confirm if your book is same as that. I suspect maybe it is defective or duplicate. I purchased all four from same online store ( buecher.de). Thanks.
I recomend "Anachron" by Haetckaya. loveread.ec/read_book.php?id=30519&p=1 And Strugatsky brothers, a lot of them. And Vladimir Michailov such as "Then we come and judge" or "Door from that side" And Diachenko. And many others, but not so old, how are here in video.... f.e. i like "Ulenspiegel" by Coster, but i don't think that it is about modern Dutch and modern Niederlandes... :> Except may be Gogol :> And read "12 chairs" and 'Golden calves" by Il'f and Petrov, it's "must read" :)
Strange...and happy to watch video on classic. It's a unfortunate part that most of woman marking video on haul of attire and undergarments. It's. Strange video in book.. keep it up .and share link from where one can buy online these book from particular publication
Jillian .Matchett , I think the same. It was written in America, in english language and about America. the only Russian thing there is the brain of the writer) and I can feel it. by the way Nabokov wrote 2 versions of this book - English and Russian.
I really want this beautiful books but I speak Russian so I don't need them (and I have almost all of them in Russian with like a boring covers and shit...),what a pity
Why do you buy books , that were originally written in the Russian language, in English and not in your native language, so you can understand it better ?
I'm sorry but the concept of this video is just stupid... You didn't even read most of the books you're presenting. Do you read a book for the design or for the content ? Plus the covers aren't even significant except maybe for the colors used but the drawings ??... Société de consommation quand tu nous tiens...
Джульетта omg you must read White Nights, it’s a very short book by Dostoevsky I highly recommend it
Преступление и наказание - красивое? Девушка, вы шо? там бабку грохнули
I am not Russian so I sadly cannot read them in its original language. I've read these three too and they are among my favourite classics.
Does War and Peace have a lot of boring parts like a lot of very long classic Novels?
fydor was a god... notes from underground .... masterpiece
Hello from Russia! I really advise you to read Pushkin. He is classics. He wrote either poems or books. He is our the best poet ever. We are very proud of him!

Edmond Ko I heartily agree.
I’d love to hear why you love the book so much?
I'm in love with russians authors
“which I decided to purchase and spoil myself with bc i deserve it” 😂
my new excuse for purchasing a bunch of books
Because I deserve it. 🤩🤣 Those are gorgeous. Kind of weird for Crime and P. to have such a pretty, frilly cover.
Hhaha i thought the same 😆
“Because I deserve it” 💁🏻♀️🤣👏🏼 I love hearing Russian classic recommendations, because the small number I’ve read have been pretty kick ass.
I love Russian classics and I love these editions. I have collected them as well!
Very pretty, eye candy! 😁 oh the book covers are gorgeous too ;-) ;-) ;-)
Helene is my spirit animal...
And russian novels absolutely destroy my soul. They're so good.
I also, love the Russian classics and I loved the bronze horseman.....Thankyou Helene!

These are the most beautiful edition of any book I’ve ever seen. Ever. I want all of them. But I live in the states and we only have 2 available.
Beautiful edition! I put them in my wish list! 📚😍
GORGEOUS books! I read Crime and Punishment a few months back and it still doesn't seem to leave my mind. Looking forward to reading Anna Karenina and War and Peace 🖤
I read Crime and Punishment twice, it haunts me everyday, the novel will never leave my mind.

Even though I have some of these books in other editions I'm thinking about getting these editions. Sooo pretty. :)
Hi!!!! I love your videos and I just got this edition of Anna Karenina three days ago!!! And then you made a video about it 😂😍

Where do you find the time to read so, so, so, many books 📚!😳😱? How long does it take you to start and finish a classic novel?
Great video as always, you should do a video on leather bound books I would like to hear your opinion on it.

Lolita isn't really a "Russian" book though - it is set in America.

Why do you buy books , that were originally written in the Russian language, in English and not in your native language, so you can understand it better ?
The Bronze Horseman reads like satire on Soviet Russia. It has so many factual mistakes that it is awkward to read it.
yes please to war and peace
