Autumn Blaze feels like she was purposely designed to be a waifu. Jonny Manz What's really cool is that this foreshadows the relationship between Kirin and Nirik and the ultimate solution. The yin-yang symbol, or taijitu as it is properly called, represents duality and balance between dark and light, sun and moon, passion and reason. Neither can be complete without the other and must exist in balance, just as the Kirin are incomplete without their emotions and voices and needed to find a balance to keep their tempers from becoming a danger without throwing away the ability to feel.

Absolutely amazing episode! Just love it a lot. The one little gripe I have is that I wish some of the lyrics for the reprise would have been changed; from the Kirin never changed to that they finally learned or something like that, just just seems kind of sloppy wording from an otherwise fantastic song. Love the lesson as well; also minor thing after seeing DWK's review of this episode I can definitely see it as a symbolic nature for how people act on the internet, lol. Edit: Also I absolutely love the older laughing maniac pony, every time I see him I start having a laughing fit; he really sells his behavior. Edit 2: I love Fluttershy yelling at Applejack; she's so far from how season 1 Fluttershy would have acted, love it so much. It's a minor moment but I love it.
This is one of those episodes that delivers a very important and quite mature take on the whole "learning to manage emotions" issue. A lot of kids shows end up giving the impression that you just need to learn not to get too angry, but that is just unrealistic. You're going to get very angry or emotional sometimes, and on those occasions, it's not only alright, but sensible and mature to just step away from the situation and let you're anger run it's course
Happy 300th reaction, my friend! =) This episode was a welcome surprise: a Map pair that has already gone on a mission, Applejack and Fluttershy, is sent out for another one. Wonders never cease with Harmony: calling characters beyond the Mane 6, expanding after the movie, and now this. Makes me wonder what she'll do to try and surprise us next. As for this episode, it was odd, but very welcome! Jackie and Flutters rarely get to share an episode together, which is a shame, since both are sweethearts with such close ties to nature. The mission itself was a doozy, though: meeting the Kirin at the Peaks of Peril, while looking out for the Nirik. Getting there wasn't easy, with a creepy station pony filling their heads with paranoia, and Applejack having to go back and forth after she realized Fluttershy had lagged behind to help some squirrels. Even so, it made me really happy to see Flutters speak up when Jackie was ignoring and talking over her, revealing the shortcut she'd discovered that AJ missed by being too gung-ho. She's come such a long way with her confidence, and I'm really proud of her. =) I really dig the design of the Kirin: part-pony, part-dragon, with those cool magic horns and fluffy manes, and that little head tilt of theirs is really cute. Not so cute was their total silence and, from what Fluttershy described, lack of emotion as well. They could understand Ponish, but couldn't speak, not that Applejack didn't try to provoke them into speech. It wasn't going to make finding a friendship problem easy, but then again, when has it ever been obvious what they're supposed to do, lol. Thankfully, there was at least one who was able to talk, as Jackie discovered, much to her surprise. Autumn Blaze is absolutely precious, from her design to her beautiful voice to the way she prances about to her Pinkie-esque case of motormouth. Then again, when she's been on her own for so long, it's small wonder that she'd have a lot to say to the first pony she can say it to. It was sad to see how much her isolation had affected her, making inanimate object friends and the like. She also has a wonderful appreciation of nature, with that fantastic speech she gave Applejack on the view from her home. She was created to be loved by everyone, I feel, and it really shows. =) Then we get the story of the Kirin themselves, as beautifully sung by Autumn. Their happy lives were disrupted when they started breaking out into arguments, turning into fiery Nirik and devastating their home with fire, to the point where they took a forceful vow of silence, robbing themselves of speech _and_ emotions. Autumn, unable to live this way, was able to make a cure for herself, but made herself a pariah amongst her own people, so she was forced to leave the village. All this time, she's wanted to try and persuade the Kirin that giving up feeling anything just to keep from getting angry is no way to live, as you have to take the good with the bad in life. It was all to no avail, especially when she can't find the foal's breath to cure the silence anymore. When Applejack went to update Fluttershy on the situation, it was to find that Flutters was all for the other side of the argument, that the Kirin should never speak again, fearing the flora and fauna that would be destroyed should it happen again. Both had legitimate points, but neither of them made an effort to try and hear more of each others' sides of the argument, stubbornly adhering to what they believed was right and not budging an inch. What made it worse was the Kirin, fearing the worst in seeing them argue, tried to 'cure' them the same way they cured themselves: with a dunk in the Stream of Silence. A horrible potential fate... Luckily, Autumn arrived to the rescue as a Nirik, demonstrating admirably her control over her anger in that form, showing that what matters isn't anger itself, but how you use it, and that getting rid of certain emotions out of fear of anything bad happening is no way to live. Applejack and Fluttershy further demonstrated how friends can argue, but still remain friends in spite of it, and advised on going Nirik to blow off steam in a safe location; all good and mature lessons. Inspired, the Kirin wanted to restore their speech, but the problem of the cure remained. Luckily, the squirrels Fluttershy had helped earlier had plenty of foal's breath. Furthermore, without the shortcut, Autumn would never have found it herself. Jackie and Flutters made amends with each other, saying that Fluttershy's kindness with the squirrels had gotten them the cure, and Applejack's honesty with the Kirin made it necessary to get it in the first place. That was why the Map called them again, and it was sweet to see them hug over it. =) With the foal's breath, the Kirin's voices were restored, and Autumn was welcomed back with open hooves, with a lovely reprise of her song. I really hope we see the Kirin again next season, especially Autumn. =) Random notes: -True talk: I had no idea the Simon and Garfunkel song the title was referring to was the 'Hello darkness' song, lol -"And solving mysteries." Now I'm imagining a crossover between MLP and Scooby Doo. Done right, of course, lol. Still, all of the girls are good at solving friendship problems. =) -"Well, ok, we tend to be a little bit literal." Fluttershy brings up a very good point about that, lol -Nice to hear Rockhoof's still doing well, providing the story of the Kirin and Nirik. -Neat yin-yang symbolism on that artwork. -"A new species being introduced." One I'd heard about before this episode, but forgot the details about. -"Flanks don't lie." Rachel Bloom, the VA for Autumn Blaze did a fantastic job voicing her and putting the real enthusiasm into her singing and personality. Without a doubt one of, if not my favorite episodes of S8. Such a cute and enjoyable episode so pleasant to watch

As much as I like the young six and their Arc I have to say this is my favorite episode of the season and Autumn Blaze my favorite character. I really hope they bring her back, especially since the series is supposedly ending next year. Welcome to post-Kirin Equestria.
I related to autumn blaze too. I was a very lonely kid, and I mean VERY LONLEY. I actually didn't talk to any ever because no one liked me (even at home) so I made imaginary friends.
While What Lies Beneath is the episode I think is the best made of the season, I can't help but feel an extra amount of love for this episode just for how it made me feel. Autumn Blaze is just glorious, probably my favorite guest character in MLP history. That song is incredible. That first monologue of hers is absolutely touching. Her sense of humor is delightfully endearing. I can't get enough of her. Due to her voice actress I suspect we won't be seeing her again, but I really hope we do more than almost anything for the final season. She's just perfect.
I do understand where fluttershy is coming from. From what fluttershy knows, once the Kirin become nirik they have little to no control over what they do. That explains why fluttershy was surprised when autumn was shown to be able to control her nirik form and became accepting to the Kirin regaining their voice. That’s my theory and idk If this comment was already made

A strange thing that I've noticed about the Kirin village is that there aren't any youngsters seen in the episode. I wonder if the fountain is responsible for that as well
Autumn said she had "years and years of stored-up words," suggesting that the kirin had been silent for a long time--yet there don't seem to be any very young or very old kirin, or very MANY kirin for that matter. And Autumn didn't go find another kirin village, so this must be THE kirin village. But they still once had a healthy culture, with markets and operas and stand-up comedy, so there have/had to be more than the few we get to see. Happy option: We just didn't get to see a lot of them. Neutral option: The kirin are like the Amazons of Themyscira--born of magic and functionally immoral, rarely creating new children. Sad option: The nirik disaster involved a LOT of fatalities and as Saphie suggested they just lost interest after bathing in the Stream of Silence.
That guy at the train stop is straight out of a Scooby Doo episode. Ominously appears, gives shady lore, has a creepy ass laugh and then ominously vanishes.
Am i the only one who feel bad for that old pony in the train station? His loneliness must drained all of his sanity, the map should send another small side quest to save that old man's life. *sad* A kirin can become burning creature that can burn a whole village if they are mad?! Mother of nature must be very cruel. In the society where everyone can hurt everyone just because they are mad so take away their emotions is a solution, wow, that's dark. I really like Autumn Blaze, i can hear her talking all day. A ton of dialogues didnt make her stroking, its amazing. She is kind of Pinkie Pie but wiser and more mature. She is a bit of Gabby but far less annoying because of her voice, damn, that voice is good, it isnt some annoying high-pitch cartoon character voice. Animals saved the day again, this is the second time, animals are the crucial part of map mission. Their knowledge cannot be underestimated.The ability to understand animals is very useful once again, Fluttershy is just an mvp in map mission. The song is pretty pleasant to hear, it combine with expositions to tell the story so i can understand what happen while enjoying a good song. This song contain emotions, moral and a good exposition which can be a bit boring if you hear them in mundane conversations. This song is not useless, that what i am trying to say. :3 AJ is just there to hear the story, she isnt useful as Fluttershy, oh well... "I'd rather... siiiiiiiiiinging" - Autumn Blaze BEST. EXCUSE. Ok there were so many Easter eggs in this episode it could rival a Marvel movie. I loved every minute of it! Plus are these creatures what happens if a pony and a dragon love each other very much?
The references in this episode were very plentiful. Aside from the obvious reference in the title, there's also... -End of the line, the final destination, and the last stop. All horror movie titles. -Hamilton, Citizen Kane, and Phantom of the Opera references in the song, and Autumn Blaze has a bunch of "Wilsons" like that guy from Castaway. -When she was playing charades with the other Kirin, she guessed "Oh no, some kirin trapped in a well?" Lassie reference. Apparently a guy on the writing staff for this episode was known for throwing in things like that.
"Put them down!" Oh okay. (splash) Butterball and Apples were right over the water so perhaps something else should've been said. Also, that "Ring of Fire".
I like how mlp is adding more mythology horse like creatures, such as the Sirens - hippocampus (Greek mythology) , and the Kirin, chinese (Japanese) mythology. I do hope they show a couple more before mlp hits its finale
A few fun facts: 1: it's been a whopping 51 episodes since the last time The Map called any of the mane 6 in a pair, since the S6 EP 24 episode 'Top Bolt was the last time it happened. 2: It would've been exactly 2 full seasons if this episode happened one episode later, which would've made it S8 EP 24. 3: Characters that was called by that map between those 2 episodes: Starlight Glimmer, the CMC, and even though it was his own friendship problem, Spike was still technically called. 4: this one is more on a related note, but I'm still drooling to see Discord get called, partly to see Twilight's reaction and face to it. It should be even more glorious then how she was when Starlight AKA Glim Glam got called!
I know the episode treats Autumn's loneliness and isolation with a kind of lighthearted humor, but I'm right on-board with you when it comes to feeling sorry for the poor thing. I mean, how miserable does someone have to feel inside before they start drawing faces on their pottery and giving names their shadow, just so they can feel like they're not so alone? That's depressing as Hell.
Yeah, these later seasons have been slipping in quite a bit of dark shit. (Zecora and Discord almost dying, Rockhoof depressed to the point of suicide, The Mean Six being killed by the Tree of Harmony, Autumn's crushing loneliness, etc)
The Kirins' blank expressions make Maud fit right in. And since you pointed that out, Luffy. What do you think it would be like if Maud was paired with a Mane Six character to help out these Kirin?

Yup, I noticed it the first time Twilight mentioned their names when showing them those pictures on the shield (also the shield resembles the Yin-Yang, or Tao-chi symbol). And I was rather surprised that not many people figured that out. Looks like not many people out there are into word puzzles and codes anymore. So I'm glad that you noticed that too.
I know what that's like, to have imaginary friends. Back when I was little, I had an invisible friend named Murphy, and the teachers at the autistic school were more annoyed with her than anyone else. I think Murphy was a girl. I do remember that the name came from a speaker grill in my dad's range rover.
Next to the “Surf and/or Turf” episode, this one is my second favorite of the season. I really enjoyed the introduction of the Kirin, they are beautiful creatures in ancient folklore and I like how they’re represented in MLP. I applaud Rachel Bloom for her Pony guest star performance as Autumn Blaze. Her personality is just so likable and adorable and is exactly why she’s my second favorite MLP guest star, next to Rara. Also, her song(“A Kirin’s Tale”) is really great, one of the best of the season like “Your Heart is in Two Places” and “We’re Friendship Bound!” This episode is responsible for me making a Kirin design of my OC and it turned out great.😉
It seems to me that the ponies that are sent on missions together need to learn a lesson just as much as those they are sent to help. It just seems that AJ doesn't respect Fluttershy very much
You know, you were talking about Fluttershy's growth and stuff about 6 and-a-half minutes in, but the whole exchange highlights another inherent flaw in Applejack's character. Applejack tends to be a little too pushy and stubborn at times. It's the same overbearing attitude we saw with her when she was overprotective of Applebloom. I mean, she can be motherly at times but sometimes it goes a bit too far.
Yep. And it also looks like one of those paradoxical character flaws that came from some of Applejack's strongest strengths. She's not an innately honest pony, so for her to be as honest as she is, even when the pressure's on to lie, it'll require her to have great determination, willpower, and drive, and she's the "go-getter" type. But having that at such a high level has an unfortunate downside of making her sometimes be too pushy, and "determination" and "stubbornness" is really the same thing, but is just looked at differently.

Wish I could've watched when this was released. Finally got around to it. I was intoxicated when I first watched this episode(lots of fun) and didn't catch the Kirin/Nirek either. So just pretend you had a few and people will forgive you, haha.
So the Kirin turn into fiery Nirik when they are angry and arguing. I bet if the Sirens would feed off there negative energy, it would give them great power. And hopefully we'll find out what happened to them in next year's March Equestria girls movie.

Their happy lives were disrupted when they started breaking out into arguments, turning into fiery Nirik and devastating their home with fire, to the point where they took a forceful vow of silence, robbing themselves of speech _and_ emotions. Autumn, unable to live this way, was able to make a cure for herself, but made herself a pariah amongst her own people, so she was forced to leave the village. All this time, she's wanted to try and persuade the Kirin that giving up feeling anything just to keep from getting angry is no way to live, as you have to take the good with the bad in life. It was all to no avail, especially when she can't find the foal's breath to cure the silence anymore.
When Applejack went to update Fluttershy on the situation, it was to find that Flutters was all for the other side of the argument, that the Kirin should never speak again, fearing the flora and fauna that would be destroyed should it happen again. Both had legitimate points, but neither of them made an effort to try and hear more of each others' sides of the argument, stubbornly adhering to what they believed was right and not budging an inch. What made it worse was the Kirin, fearing the worst in seeing them argue, tried to 'cure' them the same way they cured themselves: with a dunk in the Stream of Silence. A horrible potential fate...
Luckily, Autumn arrived to the rescue as a Nirik, demonstrating admirably her control over her anger in that form, showing that what matters isn't anger itself, but how you use it, and that getting rid of certain emotions out of fear of anything bad happening is no way to live. Applejack and Fluttershy further demonstrated how friends can argue, but still remain friends in spite of it, and advised on going Nirik to blow off steam in a safe location; all good and mature lessons.
Inspired, the Kirin wanted to restore their speech, but the problem of the cure remained. Luckily, the squirrels Fluttershy had helped earlier had plenty of foal's breath. Furthermore, without the shortcut, Autumn would never have found it herself. Jackie and Flutters made amends with each other, saying that Fluttershy's kindness with the squirrels had gotten them the cure, and Applejack's honesty with the Kirin made it necessary to get it in the first place. That was why the Map called them again, and it was sweet to see them hug over it. =)
With the foal's breath, the Kirin's voices were restored, and Autumn was welcomed back with open hooves, with a lovely reprise of her song. I really hope we see the Kirin again next season, especially Autumn. =)

Rachel Bloom, the VA for Autumn Blaze did a fantastic job voicing her and putting the real enthusiasm into her singing and personality. Without a doubt one of, if not my favorite episodes of S8. Such a cute and enjoyable episode so pleasant to watch

I related to autumn blaze too. I was a very lonely kid, and I mean VERY LONLEY. I actually didn't talk to any ever because no one liked me (even at home) so I made imaginary friends.
Given how aggravating the electric Kirin of Monster Hunter are, I am more than happy to welcome the idea of psychokinetic kirin with fire powers.

While What Lies Beneath is the episode I think is the best made of the season, I can't help but feel an extra amount of love for this episode just for how it made me feel. Autumn Blaze is just glorious, probably my favorite guest character in MLP history. That song is incredible. That first monologue of hers is absolutely touching. Her sense of humor is delightfully endearing. I can't get enough of her. Due to her voice actress I suspect we won't be seeing her again, but I really hope we do more than almost anything for the final season. She's just perfect.
I do understand where fluttershy is coming from. From what fluttershy knows, once the Kirin become nirik they have little to no control over what they do. That explains why fluttershy was surprised when autumn was shown to be able to control her nirik form and became accepting to the Kirin regaining their voice. That’s my theory and idk If this comment was already made

A strange thing that I've noticed about the Kirin village is that there aren't any youngsters seen in the episode. I wonder if the fountain is responsible for that as well

Autumn said she had "years and years of stored-up words," suggesting that the kirin had been silent for a long time--yet there don't seem to be any very young or very old kirin, or very MANY kirin for that matter. And Autumn didn't go find another kirin village, so this must be THE kirin village. But they still once had a healthy culture, with markets and operas and stand-up comedy, so there have/had to be more than the few we get to see.
Happy option: We just didn't get to see a lot of them. Neutral option: The kirin are like the Amazons of Themyscira--born of magic and functionally immoral, rarely creating new children. Sad option: The nirik disaster involved a LOT of fatalities and as Saphie suggested they just lost interest after bathing in the Stream of Silence.
I guess there would be a shortage of that sort when people can make vocal marriage proposals or blunt invitations of intimacy.
Autumn Blaze is the kind of character I would hug the instant I see her and never let her go TwT (The same with Luna, Derpy and Trixie)

That guy at the train stop is straight out of a Scooby Doo episode. Ominously appears, gives shady lore, has a creepy ass laugh and then ominously vanishes.

A kirin can become burning creature that can burn a whole village if they are mad?! Mother of nature must be very cruel. In the society where everyone can hurt everyone just because they are mad so take away their emotions is a solution, wow, that's dark.
I really like Autumn Blaze, i can hear her talking all day. A ton of dialogues didnt make her stroking, its amazing. She is kind of Pinkie Pie but wiser and more mature. She is a bit of Gabby but far less annoying because of her voice, damn, that voice is good, it isnt some annoying high-pitch cartoon character voice.
Animals saved the day again, this is the second time, animals are the crucial part of map mission. Their knowledge cannot be underestimated.The ability to understand animals is very useful once again, Fluttershy is just an mvp in map mission.
The song is pretty pleasant to hear, it combine with expositions to tell the story so i can understand what happen while enjoying a good song. This song contain emotions, moral and a good exposition which can be a bit boring if you hear them in mundane conversations. This song is not useless, that what i am trying to say. :3
AJ is just there to hear the story, she isnt useful as Fluttershy, oh well...

I like how mlp is adding more mythology horse like creatures, such as the Sirens - hippocampus (Greek mythology) , and the Kirin, chinese (Japanese) mythology. I do hope they show a couple more before mlp hits its finale
A few fun facts:
1: it's been a whopping 51 episodes since the last time The Map called any of the mane 6 in a pair, since the S6 EP 24 episode 'Top Bolt was the last time it happened.
2: It would've been exactly 2 full seasons if this episode happened one episode later, which would've made it S8 EP 24.
3: Characters that was called by that map between those 2 episodes: Starlight Glimmer, the CMC, and even though it was his own friendship problem, Spike was still technically called.
4: this one is more on a related note, but I'm still drooling to see Discord get called, partly to see Twilight's reaction and face to it. It should be even more glorious then how she was when Starlight AKA Glim Glam got called!
I know the episode treats Autumn's loneliness and isolation with a kind of lighthearted humor, but I'm right on-board with you when it comes to feeling sorry for the poor thing. I mean, how miserable does someone have to feel inside before they start drawing faces on their pottery and giving names their shadow, just so they can feel like they're not so alone?

This and Road to Friendship are my favorite episodes of this season. Autumn Blaze is definitely the most adorable character introduced since Yona.
I know what that's like, to have imaginary friends. Back when I was little, I had an invisible friend named Murphy, and the teachers at the autistic school were more annoyed with her than anyone else. I think Murphy was a girl. I do remember that the name came from a speaker grill in my dad's range rover.
Some people have imaginary friends to this day. But now they call them tulpas :J
Next to the “Surf and/or Turf” episode, this one is my second favorite of the season. I really enjoyed the introduction of the Kirin, they are beautiful creatures in ancient folklore and I like how they’re represented in MLP. I applaud Rachel Bloom for her Pony guest star performance as Autumn Blaze. Her personality is just so likable and adorable and is exactly why she’s my second favorite MLP guest star, next to Rara. Also, her song(“A Kirin’s Tale”) is really great, one of the best of the season like “Your Heart is in Two Places” and “We’re Friendship Bound!” This episode is responsible for me making a Kirin design of my OC and it turned out great.😉
Love Surf and/or Turf; a really good one. Can't wait to see his reaction to it.

You know, you were talking about Fluttershy's growth and stuff about 6 and-a-half minutes in, but the whole exchange highlights another inherent flaw in Applejack's character. Applejack tends to be a little too pushy and stubborn at times. It's the same overbearing attitude we saw with her when she was overprotective of Applebloom. I mean, she can be motherly at times but sometimes it goes a bit too far.
Yep. And it also looks like one of those paradoxical character flaws that came from some of Applejack's strongest strengths.
She's not an innately honest pony, so for her to be as honest as she is, even when the pressure's on to lie, it'll require her to have great determination, willpower, and drive, and she's the "go-getter" type.
But having that at such a high level has an unfortunate downside of making her sometimes be too pushy, and "determination" and "stubbornness" is really the same thing, but is just looked at differently.

Wish I could've watched when this was released. Finally got around to it. I was intoxicated when I first watched this episode(lots of fun) and didn't catch the Kirin/Nirek either. So just pretend you had a few and people will forgive you, haha.
So the Kirin turn into fiery Nirik when they are angry and arguing. I bet if the Sirens would feed off there negative energy, it would give them great power. And hopefully we'll find out what happened to them in next year's March Equestria girls movie.
