If he’s been playing that long then he obviously hardly ever practises because he’s just not that good. I like his acting though. It’s always girls that are defending him but the majority of guitarists are not that impressed.
Sometimes, less is more. This guy has got it. Another person has got it, but can decimate on the guitar with just one single note and you'll know who the artist is by playing one note.... B.B. King.
@@daviddebrequet2563 Yes he does play less by choice sometimes. He can with pinpoint accuracy, take a single note and add vibrato and bend to that single note and you immediately know it's B.B. King playing. A single note like that cuts through to your soul or for me anyway. In music, like with the blues, you're having a conversation. You're telling your own story by using your guitar to communicate with pauses and phrases. The note choices they use is their vocabulary they've built up over the years. Some are more talkative than others while others use less phrases. It's like no two people on earth talk the same way, but are able to understand one another. Some will talk and talk, while others use a vast array of every word in the dictionary to communicate to you. Others, can use just one word to get their point across to reach you as B.B. King would do with a single note vibrato bend sometimes. And by me saying his single note vibrato bend is easy, let me tell you, it is not. I've never ever seen another experienced guitar player play exactly like B.B. King. Another player no one will be able to play exactly like is Edward Van Halen also. Johnny Depp has developed his own vocabulary. Repetitive, but emphasis on what he's saying to you to make sure you didn't miss what he is saying. His voice on the guitar reminds me of the Goodfellas movie gangster with Jimmy Two Times. "I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers".
Johnny has been playing since his early teens. On the sets of every movie he’s been in he practices playing his guitar. He says playing guitar is his first love and acting second. He plays with Aerosmith too.
He plays...or played with Joe Perry & Alice cooper both while in the "Hollywood vampires" ....did not really play with Aerosmith... that l know of anyway
@@cclark5376 There are so many guitarists about these days and I think you’ll find that the majority of them would class him as pretty average though. It seems to me that the main reason he got a chance to play with Alice Cooper and Jeff Beck is that helped bring in the new fans and sell tickets. I’m not saying that he’s not friends with some of these people but let’s be honest his guitar playing prowess is not the main reason that they shared a stage. When Depp played with Jeff Beck the tickets would sell out, but not on the dates he didn’t play. He helped these ageing stars bring in new fans and they helped him with his rockstar ambitions. Apart from this (pretty average) example, most of the bits of film of him playing on TH-cam has his volume so low or with so many other guitarists playing at the same time that it’s hard to hear what he’s playing altogether. If you can point me towards any examples of him playing better than this one then I might change my mind. Cheers!
@@cclark5376I think you’ll find that most guitarists think he’s pretty average though. Not bad, just not particularly good either especially considering how long he’s been playing. We wouldn’t even be talking about him and his playing if he wasn’t already world famous for his looks and acting.
When I think of Johnny Depp, I think of Donnie Brasco. But for sure he's a great guitarist and I think his passion for guitar exceeds his 'day job' of acting. He's said a few times that he never watches his movies and he doesn't like Hollywood. He's more happy with his guitar! Amen to that!!
He co-wrote a couple songs back in the 80’s with the band Rock City Angels. The original, not the reissue of the album is best. Classic bluesy rock n roll.
@@daviddebrequet2563 your bitterness and jealousy is not a good look. What do you know of the friendship between Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp?. The video is titled “Johnny Depp- can he play”. Get over yourself.
Johnny has been playing guitar since he was a teen, and even was in a band before becoming an actor to pay his bills. Dude can play. Played with Jeff Beck and The Hollywood Vampires.
As many know, John started with music. You'd assume he's good just for the fact that Alice Cooper wouldn't waste his time with someone who isn't good. I think it's great John is more focused on music now, he seems very happy. I don't agree with his political views, and I know he has his issues, but he has always been extremely genuine and wonderful toward his fans, and the fact that Jeff Beck was very fond of him tells me a lot because Jeff was an extremely nice and genuine person. Anyway.. great video 👍
If you watch the very end, he's touching his guitar with the plug to create the buzzing noise that is on the end of the track called My Dead Drunk Friends
Shane, Johnny used to tour Florida doing the same circuit as I did back in the early 80's. Dude can play and totally understands how to play in a band.
This is an interesting video, Shane. Love the way you can just emulate what Depp's doing. Must say though: would Jeff Beck make an album and go on tour with someone who can't play well...? (Rhetorical question.) 😀
@@alexc3744 Because an international superstar actor helps to increase the ticket sales. It’s a win win Depp gets to realise his rockstar ambitions and Beck got Depp’s fans coming to the shows.
I think its because he is very basic. Nothing he does is ever very hard. Sure, he has great timing and such. But he is at bar-band level. Good intermediate. But has no speed...(no, I'm not talking shredding...but nothing fast or flashy....ever....at all). He has never played anything besides just basic phrases and licks. Not trying to trash him, but if he wasnt Johnny Depp THE ACTOR, you would have bever heard hus playing.
Great video, Johnny plays amazing, love the up picks! Would love to see you checkout Kiefer Sutherland, he has been playing since he was young, Country, Blues and Rock. He sings great too. Writes original music too. Really like this new series. Cheers!
Johnny auditioned with that band and the guy was like "this kid is terrible at guitar, awful, but very charismatic". He recommended Johnny to go connect up with a talent agency or something and he had his rise from there. I think he has quite a bit of acting talent. He doesn't have the same talent on guitar. He's been playing for 40 years and isn't as good as most people who played for 1-3 years in highschool. He clearly loves the blues and has fun with it, but he's not primetime ready and I missed out on seeing Jeff Beck live because Johnny inserted himself into the concert experience and I didn't want to go see the Johnny Depp show. Beck died during that tour.
@@Polyfusia You got the story partially right I think. Still I have to question your comment about he "isn't as good as most people who played for 1-3 years in high school".

@@mo-em1ke Yes it’s perfectly OK to be OK at things. His fans are completely over the top in their admiration for everything he does though. He’s a very good actor and I like his films but he can’t paint nor can he play particularly well. During the tribute for Jeff Beck he stood front and centre of the stage in front of Eric Clapton playing with his volume turned down so you couldn’t hear anything he was playing while some of the true greats of guitar playing like John McLaughlin stood at the back. I know he was Jeff Becks friend but he should have shown some humility and stood at the back with the others if he was a true fan.
I once read a quote from Joe Perry saying Johnny's one of the best slide guitar players he knows. That's no small compliment! By the way Shane, have you seen some of Johnny's custom-made guitars? Pretty interesting axes, for sure!
I was at a wrap party for the Jump Street crew in 1986 or 1987 which evolved into an open jam session. That’s when I realized Johnny Depp was a musician. Really great to see he’s reloaded his dream of playing with the greats.
Great Video Shane :) Jonny has a whole heap of personality in is playing too - something we can all take away from him :) Jeff Daniels the actor From "Dumb and Dumber" is an AMAZING Guitarist!!!
I would love to see a show with all-time great Jazz and Classical guitar players critiquing if a blues or rock great can actually play. The answer would be "not really" most of the time. Rock and Blues are simplistic musical forms. . . that's what I love about them.
Johnny is playing a Maybach Albatroz, very good guitars, arguably as good if not better than Gibson Sg series. Johnny has been playing guitar for a very long time and is an established strummer. Enjoyable series you've started Shane!
I find the straight ahead stuff fairly easy to work out, but some of it is done off camera to make the viewing experience hopefully a bit more enjoyable. Thanks for the kind words.
Really pleased you’ve been able to give Johnny a thumbs up. I’ve only seen him onstage with Jeff Beck and he was restrained. But who wouldn’t be with Jeff. You don’t play regularly with Beck unless you’re the real deal
You may want to check out the 1995 self titled album 'P' featuring Johnny Depp, Gibby Haynes and Sal Jenco. It features Chuck E. Weiss, Steve Jones and Flea as well. The song 'Michael Stipe' and the 'Dancing Queen' cover are reason enough to give it a listen.
I've read that he was a guitar player prior to being an actor. He wanted to be a musician and fell into the acting thing. I'm sure having Joe Perry as a friend probably improved his playing. I love how some players that perhaps don't have much musical theory under their belts just try things that often sound pretty good, even when they're not supposed to.....Bryan
I was pleasantly surprised by Johnny Depp and his playing with many other Musicians. His singing is good....and a lot of times his playing in those situations is simple and tasty.
@@Meatball2022 I agree, he’s not one of the best, although I like his acting and films, good vibrato and pretty good feel but to be honest he sounds no better than most rhythm guitarists in bands at my local pub at any weekend and they are amateur bands, people with day jobs not professional. If he’s been playing since he was twelve then I don’t think he HAS practised that much. I think he gets to play with people like Jeff Beck because his fans help to sell out tours. It’s a win win situation, the ageing stars earn money and Depp gets to be a rockstar. I honestly don’t think he’s sharing a stage with Jeff Beck because of his superior guitar playing ability. Beck was one of the greatest guitarists that could have taken his pick of talented players, they were friends so let’s be realistic as to why they played together.
@@johnferry7778 he’s played with plenty of people that don’t need help putting buts in seats. Plus it’s not like they’re advertising that he’s coming. He’s good. Certainly good enough to be a rock star. Great? Not hardly.

Yeah, Depp played with and made a record with Jeff. If Depp couldn't play, those wouldn't have happened.
And Aerosmith. And iggy pop
@@Meatball2022 And Alice Cooper
@@robschaller9061 yea he plays with Alice Cooper all the time.
johnny was a guitar player first. he went to hollywood to be a rock star. things change. i like him. folks can whine but i didn't see jeff beck inviting them onstage.
He loves blues.
And he is playing from the age of 12.
I'm glad he is doing the things he loves.
He plays...or played with Joe Perry & Alice cooper both while in the "Hollywood vampires"
....did not really play with Aerosmith... that l know of anyway
Why is he still so average if he’s been playing for so long?
@@johnferry7778
Don't think he is average at all...but no matter who you are or what you do there is always someone better !
It is interesting how many upstrokes he uses as well
Big Stones fan and Keith uses a lot of upstrokes.
I did that for years until I got serious. For me I feel I have more control with an upstroke. Down Strokes are kind of awkward to hit your mark.
Old blues players used mainly upstrokes for lead.
He played well on oasis’s fade in/out
Depp played before he was in films. His first dream was as an electric guitarist and it never went away. He can play.
I love your channel Shane! Specially love your no non-sense honest reviews!
Thanks for the support!
Keanu Reeves next? He's a bass player though. :)
He can actually play though
He sucks as bad as Johnny Depp! 😂
I highly doubt Jeff Beck would have done an album with him if he couldn't play
Love that lick!!!!! And that bend!!!!!! Nice!!🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🎸🎸🎸😎😎😎
I think I he played the slide solo on the Oasis song “Fade in-out” from the Be Here Now album. Noel can’t play slide (not surprisingly).
Noel is such a noob
C'mon @@shayh.3556
When I think of Johnny Depp, I think of Donnie Brasco. But for sure he's a great guitarist and I think his passion for guitar exceeds his 'day job' of acting. He's said a few times that he never watches his movies and he doesn't like Hollywood. He's more happy with his guitar! Amen to that!!
Johnny is a musician he started acting to pay his bills and I'm not joking
@@daviddebrequet2563 I mean yeah, he can still play though.
@@daviddebrequet2563 EXACTLY. He wouldnt have a hope in he11 of being on stage without the actor part.
Well, I guess he earned enough to pay the bills🤓
Yup, we're still a few left that actually can play campfire's using only 3 chords hehe :)
I don't agree with his political views, and I know he has his issues, but he has always been extremely genuine and wonderful toward his fans,
and the fact that Jeff Beck was very fond of him tells me a lot because Jeff was an extremely nice and genuine person.
Anyway.. great video 👍
Mr. beck WASN'T called the Guv'nor for nothing!
Have a look at Tim Sult. He not a movie star , however he plays a mean guitar… ‘bow down!’

Its funny how people suggested him just bc they thought you would tear him to pieces but Depp is actually a very good blues player
Cheers!
Kiefer has a signature Gibson KS-336
My mom knew Johnny when he was a member of a band called the Kids, waaaaaayyyy back in the day. I think he can play.
@@mrmarleay396 He was pretty accurate, that was a good take on the whole situation.
It was really sloppy, and a lot of gain, so I couldn’t really hear what he was playing. Maybe I’ll plug my phone in. Listen to it through some speakers.
But, yeah, any kid that’s played for a year or two could do whatever Johnny was just doing here.

Thanks man for reaction 😊
No problem 😊
Thanks for the heads up grant cheers man 👍
I would love to see a show with all-time great Jazz and Classical guitar players critiquing if a blues or rock great can actually play. The answer would be "not really" most of the time. Rock and Blues are simplistic musical forms. . . that's what I love about them.
I've seen him play with Hollywood Vampires. Great guitarist
Johnny is playing a Maybach Albatroz, very good guitars, arguably as good if not better than Gibson Sg series. Johnny has been playing guitar for a very long time and is an established strummer.
Enjoyable series you've started Shane!

He’s in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Into the Great Wide Open” music video
Amazing how you can instantly imitate all these different artists, wow!
I find the straight ahead stuff fairly easy to work out, but some of it is done off camera to make the viewing experience hopefully a bit more enjoyable. Thanks for the kind words.
I think I read he moved to LA to be a musician and fell into acting. He’s also in the Petty video Into the Great Wide Open.
The ‘grit’ in the tone is on point!
I never thought I'd be able imagine what a solo smelled like
I've read that he was a guitar player prior to being an actor.
He didn’t doing anything brilliant. But the tone, timing, control on tremolo, bends etc, shows so so much practice. He clearly takes it seriously.
He’s not one of the best. He’s not an “elite” guitarist. But he’s easily good enough to do it professionally if he wanted to.
@@Meatball2022If by “elite guitarist” you mean competent/average ability then yes.
@@johnferry7778 I didn’t say he was elite. I said the opposite. Because, english
