Mendeley Desktop and Mendeley Reference Manager both support cite as you write. The interface of Mendeley Reference Manager and integration with MS word seems better than the other release. but Mendeley Reference Manager does not support local storage, while Desktop does. So I am running both currently.
Try this also to enable Mendeley Cite in Word.
Why does Mendeley Cite not appear in the 'References' tab in Word?
Users who are using Microsoft Word 2016 will notice after installing Mendeley Cite that the add-in does not appear in the 'References' tab. This is because Microsoft Word 2016 does not support add-ins downloaded from Microsoft AppSource to appear within the ribbon tabs in Microsoft Word.
To access Mendeley Cite after you have installed it, you will need to access it through the add-ins menu. To do this, click on the 'Insert' tab and select the 'My Add-ins' option. Here you should see a menu load which contains Mendeley Cite.

Here's how:
Open Mendeley desktop software.
Make sure MS Word is completely closed.
Go to the “Tools” menu at the top of your screen (on a Mac)
Choose “Uninstall MS Word Plugin”
Close and reopen Mendeley.
Go back to “Tools”, select “Install MS Word Plugin”, hit OK.
Open MS Word.
Mendeley Word Plugin doesn't work with M1 Office version.

Probem was fixed but after two day mendeley not opening. now its popup a message when trying to open "mendeley is feeling very poorly at the moment.
Go to
C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\ & delete the folder related to #Mendeley. Restart the app!

@xandrutait thanks so much! This video is so useful. (1) However my MacBook does not have Desktop only Mendeley Web Importer. So I can't follow steps from minute 4:32. (2) My problem is when I click on the Mendeley Cite icon, then click Get Started, my list of journals in Mendeley Library does not appear. I don't have Mendeley Desktop to click on "Synchronise Library" like in your vide. appreciate advice on the workaround? Thanks very much!

Thanks bro! But I get a problem to add mendeley Cite ( word 2016) it say " we can't load this add-in because we couldn't connect to the catalog"
Never heard of that before, I found this online. A few things to check:
Office won't be able to connect to the add-ins catalogue unless there's a live internet connection, so when you see this error message, start your browser and make sure you can bring up a page or two that you haven't visited before.
If this is a company-supplied PC, there may be policy/security settings that prohibit your installing add-ins. You'd want to check with the help desk or IT department, if any.
If it's your own computer but on a company/enterprise network, there may be network policies that prevent your connecting to the catalogue. It'd be worth testing to see whether you can use the add-ins at home but not at whatever location you're at when you have the error message.
Goto Insert then get add-ins and see if it lets you install any free plugin or is Word blocking everything and if so is your office supplied by your university.
Error Message:"Mendeley is feeling very poorly at the moment.
On a Mac, it is fixed analogically by deleting the folder "~/Library/Application Support/Mendeley Desktop"

Hi,been really busy sorry but fonund this may help. Mendeley is phasing out its outdated Mendeley Desktop in September 2022 to gently nudge users toward its newer Mendeley Reference Manager. Deleting the Desktop version leaves an unruly .dotm template behind. It's in the (hidden) Library folder. You need to get rid of the template.
Open the Finder window and note down the full path of the .dotm template. Depending on your Word version, it might vary. Open Word, go to Tools> Templates and add-ins.
Locate and note down the "full path". For illustration, mine was:
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Startup.localized/Word/Mendeley-word2016-1.19.8.dotm
Now Open the Finder window on your Mac.
Press Cmd+Shift+G. A dialog box should open up with "Go to the Folder" written in the header. The box should display ~/Library/
Enter the "full path" of the .dotm file in the dialog box starting from ~/Library/. It should take you straight to the word template causing the headache. Again, mine was:
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Startup.localized/Word/Mendeley-word2016-1.19.8.dotm
[Alternatively, once the dialog box "Go to the Folder" opens up, you could simply type nothing. Just let the box read ~/Library/ and press enter. Then manually follow the "full path" with your trackpad until you reach the .dotm template.]
4. Delete the .dotm file.
5. Close and restart Word.
This should take care of the irksome plug-in that's refusing to leave your life.
