In the group stage, Ivory Coast faced a setback with a 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea, but they rallied back and qualified for the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams. Coach Jean-Louis Gasset was dismissed, and Assistant Emerse Fay took over as interim manager.
Under Fay's guidance, the Elephants navigated through the knockouts, overcoming tough opponents. In the semifinals, they thrashed DR Congo to secure their place in the final.
The final clash took place in Abidjan, where Nigeria scored first, but Ivory Coast responded with a well-deserved equalizer by Franck Kessy. With just nine minutes remaining in normal time, Sebastien Haller netted the decisive goal, leading Ivory Coast to a 2-1 victory.
This triumph marked Ivory Coast's third AFCON title, and their first since 2015. They became the first host nation to emerge as champions since Egypt in 2006.
