    As a third year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography, I can say that these are all excellent commandments! Still figuring out how to handle criticism without getting my feelings hurt or feeling personally attacked haha 😂 Thanks!!

    “Thou shalt not take the name of your university in vain.”
    That’s funny as hell.

    Great commandments. About the last one, I am boxing with my own thoughts. On the one hand, you should not compare, on the other hand though -- you WILL be compared by granting agencies, hiring committees et cetera. So, it is a two-sided stick.

    Thank you very much. I ran a PhD programme and flunked and I am going to run another one again. The second climb has been very difficult, but these tips are very helpful and I have learned a lot from these commandments.

    As embarrassing it is to admit, I've had a writer's block as an academic since.. forever.
    Maybe I'm missing good feedback, or get hung up on things like that infamous first paragraph of every paper ever called "motivation". Interest is always going up. Or recently it began to grow. Something to that effect. In my frustration I even made a graph showing this rising interest. It's just y=x^2. I know. Silly. But that is how I feel about this subject.

    i'm not a researcher, but i'm pretty sure you would also need a good schedule for those days when you're gonna do your stuff (compared to the 1-day-off rule). Should prevent burn outs from too much work and time slips from too little work.

    Hi. Got any pointers for someone giving up on PhD applications after looking at the lack of funding (uk). I love research. I'm not feeling optimistic about my chances of getting funding to do said research. Haven't completely given up on the idea yet... not sure what the right thing to do would be.

    I think what helps, is going in with the idea that a PHD isn't for you. Its for the whole of the scientific community.
    Yes, you get your doctorate.
    No, your parents still don't care about you.
    Change the world, not your pay grade.

    They should only need one requirement and that is invent something or discover something important. PhDs on where your cat goes at night is not the thing. That's moronic. Yes I'm not kidding, there is a Brit research project on this matter.

    • @tg7112
      @tg7112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is it moronic?
