I laughed so hard at your realization that Vanilla Ice sampled this. Knox, you should definitely dig into David Bowie. He was one of the most iconic artists ever, a master at reinventing himself, and always fearless in whatever he did. As far as a first song to check out, I would recommend the official video for Space Oddity (the song is from 1969). However, I think a great introduction to David Bowie is the clip of his interview on MTV in 1983, in which he calls out MTV for not playing the music of black artists. It's titled "David Bowie addresses the apparent racism on MTV (1983)." He is an artist well worth your time.
I completely agree, great description. When someone asks me about David Bowie and the kind of artist he was,l always bring up that interview, and his attitude during it,first of all because he denounced racism, and also because l think it shows both the sharp intellect and the courage to say what you believe in (MTV was powerful back then),which are mirrored in his music, great lyrics, experimental stuff, doing things so differently without fear of expressing yourself
It's David Bo-wee 😂 this was never performed live, it's Freddie at Wembly and David at Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert after Freddie died, it's amazing too.
Does the pronunciation change depending on Regions of Britian, Regions of US Cause here in Oklahoma it's either Boo-ee or Bow-ee (Bow as Cross bow) I have no idea where David was from..... but they say Vit-a-mins instead of Vite-a-mins, Aluminioum (I cant spell it) instead of Aluminum . I chalk it up to different dialect. Because I say stuff wrong to others all the damn time ;)
@@AngB517I believe names are sacred and should always be pronounced the way the “owner” pronounces it - regardless of the language. So he’s Bowie, rhymes with Joey, because that’s how he pronounced it 🙂
David Bowie also called out MTV for not showing black rappers videos, there's a great interview where he nails them over it. He was such an extraordinary performer and a very insightful human too. His predictions about the internet were very prescient!
I loved that! I actually saw it when it came out. He wouldn’t let it go either and called out media for not integrating more. Mark Goodman kept trying to explain it away and Bowie wasn’t having it. Iconic.
Queen and David Bowie met in Montreux, they both recorded music at the same studio and they came up with the song .. The queen bassist John Deacon came up with the riff.. That video is from two different concerts One is Queens in Wembley in 1986 David Bowie's part was at the memorial concert after Freddie passed away that was held at Webley in April of 1992 Someone edited the parts and that video is the result ❤
Yep! And since knox and many others on this channel loved Hamilton, there's a lovely short video where Lin and Jonathan Groff act and sing to "Magic dance ",as an homage to David Bowie before going on stage and perform, around the days he died. It's really good

Gotta react to Queen's "Show Must Go On". One the band's best ones and one of Freddie Mercury's last songs he recorded before he passed away from aids.
I knew I would love your initial reaction to the intro bassline of this and I was not disappointed. If I remember I think Vanilla Ice didn't get full permission to use that sample and he tried to pass it off as his own but no one believed him. It's just too iconic.
"theirs goes 'do do do dododo do (pause) do do do dododo do' but mine is like "do do do dododo do tssss do do do dododo do' so it's not even the same" 😂
Right, I remember him talking about it in a video, trying to demonstrate that it wasn't the same, because it had that "littly bitty change." Ridiculous! I'm gonna see if I can find that. Will report back.

David Bowie and Annie Lennox sang this with Queen at the Freddy Mercury Tribute concert after Freddie died. that concert was so moving, I sobbed. You should check it out, Knox. George Michael sang Someone to Love. So many great artists participated.

Freddie was still alive when Vanilla Ice song came out so Freddie actually got to hear it and thought it was ridiculous. Vanillia ice was hit with a copyright infringement, the case was settled out of court. Then Jedward came along and did a cover of this song and music never recovered from that. Queen and Bowie never sang this song together, live. This video is a mix mash of the Wembley peformance by Queen back in 85 (maybe) and tribute concert to Freddie in 1992. Bowie didn't like this song, he didn't want to release it cause he wasn't happy with his vocals on it but came around to it anyway!
This was such a big story back when it happened. Ice tried to say it wasn't a sample but he had to pay. I have no knowledge of music, I either like it or I don't but I can't tell the difference!
No man is a building? True enough. Check out John Donne - "No man is an island, entire unto himself.' The poem is also quoted at the end of Hemingways "For Whom the Bell Tolls. "Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." Freddie & Bowie never get old, even tho I did. I was 45 when this came out.
0:30 well, yes, of course haha (I was brought up with classic rock the first half of my childhood.) And Vanilla Ice said it was a TOTALLY different bass line because he added ONE extra note. 😑 Queen was like "yeah....we're still going to court." Don't feel bad. Every person who has reviewed this video has stopped it, some wondering if Queen took it from Vanilla Ice until they did the release date math...lol! Truly one of the best songs ever performed from who, at the time, were two of my favorite performers. I saw Queen in 82 and after over 100 live shows still say it was the 2nd best performance I'd seen (Pink Floyd - The Wall at the Forum was number one). FYI, it's pronounced David "Bo wee" (hard o).
Thank you, Knox, for doing justice to a song that for reasons I don't understand brings me close to tears every time. Maybe it's because I waa the right age when it came out and it followed me as I grew up, always reminding me of school friends I listened to it with on vinyl

Two of the biggest legends in the world. Freddie and Bowie’s chemistry were outstanding. It’s so sad that we lost them, showing our future the music that changed our lives.❤️🐐🔥🙏🌹 Knox so glad you still jump out of the pocket to listen to different genres and generations. ❤️
If you want to experience the awesome way Queen would open a concert , an example would be One Vision live at Wembley 1986. The slightly longer version that shows time lapse of building the stage and the audience arriving. Blind and deafen them was goal.

This is probably one of my all time favorite songs. I had to laugh at the Vanilla Ice reference. Definitely go down the David Bowie rabbit hole!!! I think you'll love his catalogue. To answer your question: No, Queen doesn't ever miss!!!:)
Loving your energy, appreciation, and interpretation with this classic. Thank you
Two of the biggest legends in the world. Freddie and Bowie’s chemistry were outstanding. It’s so sad that we lost them, showing our future the music that changed our lives.❤️🐐🔥🙏🌹
Knox so glad you still jump out of the pocket to listen to different genres and generations. ❤️
If you want to experience the awesome way Queen would open a concert , an example would be One Vision live at Wembley 1986. The slightly longer version that shows time lapse of building the stage and the audience arriving. Blind and deafen them was goal.
Two legends together, great!
U should dive into more 60s 70s & 80s music! 🙌
Cannot believe you didn’t know about the bass line being borrowed by vanilla ice
How does Knox not know any Queen, lol. Need to do Bowie, another giant.
Awesome reaction, two of the greats, thank you Sir 🙏🐊❤️🦉👍
You should listen to "cool cat" because of his voice in that and its underrated
Suggestion: listen Bowie's song " Life on Mars"
LOL! Your face was priceless. Lots of people have been in your shoes.
"No no!" 😂😂
You nearly quoted John Donne there.
No man is an island,
Entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
0:44 Yep! He did use the song in his singing it. It’s actually quite old, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury sang this duet in 1981.
This is one of my favorite songs growing up. Two icons. I laughed hard at your realization about Ice.
